A good, if short, review by the very discerning Ian Winwood. It is a pity that someone of Frank's stature only merits such a short review, but at least Ian is a willing listener and does not fall into the review style mentioned by Itchload elsewhere:
The troubles of being a legend - or, in this case, a significant part of a legendary band - surround Frank Black like a murder of crows. The Pixies were not to much timeless as before their time; they broke into pieces before attaining great (commercial) success and the rot of romance quickly set in. For an artist existing in the present tense, this is trouble - although for a willing listener, it needn't be. Both Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop prove that real talent will out even if the kudos resides in the past. Featuring a natural and honourable selection of the finest styles of American music - a souped up version of Tom Waits' Black Rider and the languid and remote Chip Away Boy on BLD; a shuffling and sun-drowned San Antonio, Tx and a warm, distorted Fields of Marigold on DW - suggest that while the perception may have changed, Frank Black's instincts and abilities as a songwriter have never wavered. |
