Yesterday I wandered into Academy Records on 18th st. between 5th/6th ave. And what did I find? A copy of the spin art advance promo cd "show me your tears"
Didn't think I would be hearing this untill september. When I got to the register, the guy said they had gotten it that morning (its a used cd shop right in the middle of manhattan where all the advertising promom co.s are, so they get lots of early stuff.) and he said they played it and were blown away.
Well, You will be too. It is so good. Very different than the other catholics records. Much more.... lush, and the instrumentation is more varied than probobly anything he has worked on. (Trumpet, accordion, lots of piano, harmonica... all at once sometimes.) this album is another great big leap for fb&thec's. I don't have it in front of me, my girlfriend commandered it for the day, but WOW, it is a real treat.
Start scouring those used cd bins... there must be more of these disks falling into unappreciative hands. Oh, and Jean Black is listed with a singing credit. How romantic.
P.S. Manitoba... oh my god. You might have heard it live, but just you WAIT.

Indeed my friend. This album really blew me away. Simply amazing. Especially Manitoba. Nothing can really prepare you for what this sounds like. Another Frank Black transformation. Takes the ideas from BLD and runs away with them to a place where 10 musicians get together in a room and just make the most wonderfull sound you've ever heard. And the record is quite varied as well, from Nadine to Coastline to Manitoba, all very different. I can't say enough good things about this album.

i love it - and i decided i'm gonna buy 2 when its released - one pre-ordered thru spinart and one at a soundscan-reporting store so that i know my purchase is going towards any sort of minimal chart action. and i'm going to distribute the extra copy to a person who i'm friends w/ and likes FB but never buys his CDs

I bought BLD four times when it came out - two for me and two for other people. And I am sure I will do something similar with SMYT - so I feel like downloading it is OK. |

I dont see any possible way this album could be reviewed negatively or even luked-warm. Sounds like this album could be a classic or at least considered a major milestone in Frank's post-pixies career (through the media eyes at least).
The album has a strange fertile lifeness... The production is beautiful...
How can you beat a song with a contribution by Van Dyke Parks?

i think its great that frank is getting some outside help, i mean, its amazing that hes been able to write so many great songs by himself, but the addition of the extra person in writing really can help. that seems like why the beatles were so successful

Just downloaded it last night..
The first message in this thread is too emotionally involved. Personal feeling sometimes gets in the way of judgement of majority opinion. If you want a alternative to that opinion, here's mine..
Sounds like a step down from the last 2 albums. Is Frank drunk on this recording? The melodies suffer because he's focusing too much on the chord progressions. His goal is to prevent himself from writing songs that sound like his other songs. That's the problem when you write over 200 songs.
No song stands out, especially the first song on the album that has been hyped up. Actually, that's my least favorite. Overall, the album sound is "blehhhh" to me. Nothing sticks out, no song, no melody, no lyrics. I do hate it when he ruins a song with the word "f_ck" because it just prompts me to skip the song when listening to it around the family.
Frank should have spent another year writing and re-writing these songs, because this album sounds like a demo-take to me, half-prepared. But, I guess that's the b-movie, country-bar band sound they're aiming for. The perfect lyric line he says that best sums it up is "I'm drunk all the time, the sun never shines, (the rest of the lyric is intelligible)"

That's great! You need a lot of listenings to fully appreciate Frank's records, so I'd say it's actually a good thing that you didn't like the album at first. I have no doubt it'll grow on you.

I'm on Kazaa avec the album, as well as WinMx. That's right, I couldn't take the fact that other people were hearing the album before me, so I broke down and downloaded it. And I'm mighty happy to have done so. |

It sounds demo-ish to me too...I was expecting more...The snake is my highlight so far but the whole album sounds like Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day:unfinished, unpolished un-call it what you will. Not always being prolific is a good thing, specially when last year you publish not one but two albums.Maybe listening to it a few more times ... Anyway Kirk the fuck thing is crap...I mean how old are you?12?

I think this new album pales in comparison to Frank's last three...
I think those of you who are gushing over this arrangement of "Manitoba" need to listen to more music.
I think this album has a real hit with Massif Centrale, but that's about it. The rest is stuff I'd love to hear him play live, but just bores me to death on an album.
Anyway, that's what I think. |

NOTE ****** this is NOT, I repeat NOT my final opinion on this album. All Frank albums need to stew in my head for a while before I can make final judgement....
However...after listening to the album about 6 times now, I definitely at this point in time think that it pales horribly to the last 2. I thought BLD and Workshop were works of total genius...total masterpieces....I STILL listen to them "almost" on a daily basis and I first got them last May when they leaked.
This album doesn't really have any song that is just knocking me off my feet like "Chip Away Boy", "End Of Miles", "Jane the Queen Of Love", "21 Reasons", "San Antonio Tx.", "Heloise", "Whiskey In My Shoes", etc. I don't care much at all for "Nadine"...just don't like that sound and the song doesn't really have any hooks to speak of. Kinda reminds me of "1826" from BLD...just kinda plods along. "Everything Is New" is pretty good as is the next track. "Horrible Day" is good, but I know exactly what Kirk means by wishing he would have left out the word "fuck". Not that I can't deal with profanities, I really have no problem with them, but it just seems like it makes the song sink to a lower level for some reason. It just doesn't go well with the song and sounds as though it was added just for the purpose of adding the word "fuck". Unlike in a song like say "Hermaphroditos" when he says "forget your yin and go fuck your yang"...now that seemed to fit and seemed in place in that song. I do like "Coastline", a bit short, but it's a good track. And "Manitoba", ehhh, I don't know what you people think is so great about it really. I mean, it's not a bad song but my opinion of it now is that it's average at best.
I'm still definitely going to buy the album regardless as I have all of Frank's work and will always buy Frank's discs.....but yeah, I would say right now a good comparison to this album would be SSMVGD.
Hopefully my opinion will change and in a few months this album will be blowing my mind, but right now I've gotta say it's not floating my boat nearly as much as I would like. But hey, even if my opinion doesn't change about the album it would be foolish to expect any artist or band to please everyone with every record they release. |

Well I'm glad to see two total opposite opinions of the album. All of this "Holy shit this is the best thing since sliced bread" stuff usually just makes me severely disappointed when I actually listen to it myself. All this hype over Manitoba...honestly, that's the one song I've been least looking forward to. |

honestly i think Manitoba is one of the best songs made by FB, so simple, so great...simplicity always hook me in music, thatīs why i felt in love with the pixies back on those days, thatīs why FB continuos to surprise me all the time, the capacity to make simple and delicious things.
