i've only heard a bit of the leaked versions that were.. leaked on the internet a couple of months ago. it was mainly for my brother cos he's a radiohead nut. but then it was his birthday yesterday, so i bought him the proper album (minutes before seeing him, it came out on that day). but erm, i wasn't really that impressed from what i heard. but i never really got into anything past OK computer to be honest. i should give it more time.

i've read two reviews, MOJO gave it 4/5 and Q gave it 3/5.

I have the whole album on mp3, have had it for a few weeks now. and YES, i AM GOING to buy the actual album. I just couldn't resist previewing it when the chance presented itself.

It's GREAT. Definitely stronger/better to my ear than Kid A or Amnesiac, though both those albums are excellent as well....

Hight points (that I remember from one full listen) 2+2=5, Myxomatosis, Sail to the Moon, Sit Down Stand Up, Where I End you Begin...

I need to give it a few thorough listens to really form a solid opinion. But my initial impressions are very, very good ones indeed.

I was just going to post this topic. I bought mine today, went into it totally blind (haven't even heard the single) and have listend 1.5 times. I like it, these things take time though

one thing, PLEASE only respond to this thread if you are listening to Hail to the Thief as a Radiohead fan...every time I see these guys brought up in a chat the slew of "radiohead suck" comments come flying in. All fine and dandy, but not in this thread please.

i bought it today as soon as i could. i should start off by saying that the cd version is much better than the early leaked version, which is the one i had. the songs arent drastically different, but it just sounds so much better as a whole. its a good album though, id say i like it more than kid a at the moment, which by default makes it better than amnesiac and pablo honey, atleast in my scaling.

yes, great radiohead album.
i caught it on Kazaa for two months, and i must admit that the first listen was boring. for me, the worst radiohead album is amnesiac, and hail to the thief seem first a little bit the same stuff. but, after three listining, it's very more brillant than amnesiac.
but, another point with radiohead :
it was a very good rock band whith "my iron lung", "the bends" and "pablo honey". for me they was the nearest pixies band.
but, with "ok computer", they change their music (because of drugs?? sure...) and it's another group.
however, Hail to the thief is a great album of this *new* radiohead band.

i love the album - i sorta played out the mp3 version, and now i wish i didn't, so it'd sound fresher to my ears (ah, the perils of file sharing...)

I love Radiohead tons, but I'm hoping that this album is different than the last. I can't quite wrap me ears around Amnesiac. I started listening to them as soon as Pablo Honey came out and it and the Bends are so different.

Pablo Honey is such a horrible album, I hate it. It's full of cheese, reminds me of some high school garage band. They polished up their act with The Bends, which is a better rock album, although I'm not a *huge* fan of it. OK Computer is top fucking knotch, no doubt one of the top 10 (even 5) albums of the 90s..it's excellent. Brilliant songwriting + excellent music = killer album. Kid A takes a little getting used to, but once you do it sucks you in. I think it's terrific. Amnesiac is a little more rough around the edges than Kid A, but is still a great album with some great tunes.

You're right, Pablo Honey was not that great and it is obviously their first album, but I liked a couple of the cheesy tunes like, thinkin about you. Either way for me its a complete tossup between the Bends and OK Computer, I like both of them but for different reasons.

Yeah, I think I know where you might be coming from Carol. I have been into Radiohead since Pablo/The Bends and I truly loved those albums at the time. Then OK Computer came out and it was just so different, it took me about a year to finally realize how great it is. Then after that Radiohead became the big thing, so I think a lot of people got into the band with Ok Computer and Kid A and when they backtracked to the earlier albums they didn't find them nearly as good and felt compelled to write them off. I'm not saying El Barto is like this, but I had a hipster friend who got into Radiohead with Kid A...and like 5 days later was talking about how much Pablo Honey "sucked" and I wanted to strangle him, like "you haven't earned the right to say PH sucks you bastard!"

some people be DOWN on ol Pablo Honey.
It's not THAT BAD, you all! Ok, it's a little "immature" in terms of the bands evolution, but I will gladly listen to it any day and draw some genuine joy out of it. It's a GOOD album...not the best...but good!!!

i love the bends - pablo is ok, but an obvious debut album - ok blows my mind - kid a was very inspired - amnesiac was less inspired but more song oriented - thief is a little bit of all of them

Radiohead SUCKS!

Just kidding, folks. A friend of mine bought Hail To The Thief (George W. reference, mayhap?) yesterday. I was over at his house today and he played the first track for me. Sounded a little by the numbers (at least for Radiohead), but my friend was very enthusiastic.

Kid A- WOW. Just had to say that.

Yes, a GW reference. This is from Andrew Sullivan's blog today, via Rolling Stone, thanks to the Baghdad Broadcasting Corp.:

"June 11, 2003
http://www.andrewsullivan.com/

THE BBC AND RADIOHEAD: How did Radiohead's Thom Yorke come up with the title for their new CD, "Hail To The Thief"? By listening to our old favorite, the BBC, of course:

'Rolling Stone: When did you first hear the phrase "hail to the thief," and what made it appealing as an album title?
Thom Yorke: It was a formative moment - one evening on the radio, way before we were doing the record. The BBC was running stories about how the Florida vote had been rigged and how Bush was being called a thief. That line threw a switch in my head. I couldn't get away from it. And the light - I was driving that evening with the radio on - was particularly weird. I had this tremendous feeling of foreboding, quite indescribable, really. To me, all the feelings on the record stem from that moment.'

The BBC was running stories about how the Florida vote had been rigged. Well of course they were, weren't they?
- 12:11:44 AM"

Such noble inspirations: Lies, Ignorance, and Fear.

Itch, nail on the head. I got into Radiohead with OK Computer. My mom (of all people) is and was at the time a huge fan, so I was obviously trying to not dig this band that my mom loved...but I listened to it and loved it. I think Amnesiac came next...then The Bends, then Pablo Honey, then Kid A. I stole Pablo Honey from my sister a long time ago but never listened to it. Man, Pablo Honey just really sucks. It's embarassing.

Of course, Creep was overplayed...but i think it's sick with sarcasm too, ain't it? They hate it too..

Hail is a great album, imo. Best thing since OK for sure. Takes a little time..

There There is my favorite song of the year i think...holy shit i love that guitar part....dun DUN dun...i just can't get enough of that, it's so weird.

I'm glad they're really still redefining themselves and moving forward with their music, most bands tend to stick with what they've done and what works...blah.. I'd rather get 1 in 3 'good' albums, but have them vastly different from the others..

Wait until the new Blur comes out, it's my fav album of the year for sure. (Well, that and Electric Six, but that's almost more of a fetish..hahah)

Actually I heard that Iron Lung on the bends was supposed to be about Creep
"this is our new song, just like the last one, a total waste of time, my iron lung."

What is the name of that band that Blur members are in but they're cartoons? I like that song, I'm happy, feelin glad, I got sunshine in a bag.

I hated the Flaming Lips "Vaseline" song with a passion...everyone fucking sang it loved it and it was way overplayed. My Iron Lung is about radio friendly music/the radio from what I understand, and yeah, probably a reference to Creep.

I picked up Hail to the Thief at a kick-ass indie shop (yay!) in State College. I've only listened to it once all the way through, and I gotta say that I'm not super impressed. It's so damn dark and mellow and depressing. There There, 2+2=5, and 'Wedding' are probably my favorite. I guess you can't put out a very happy album under the circumstances (shitty world). I'm sure I'll like it after more listening.
