Their music is excellent. Same reason why the Pixies are great...they're a band that writes and performs excellent music. See: Sister, Murray Street, NYC Ghosts & Flowers... |

I do like art rock. And god knows (and will damn me to hell) I like a good wanking, but Sonic Youth are noise.
Are they cool? |

You don't understand.. and a forum post won't give you the ability to appreciate chaotic and creative music like sonic youth. I guess it just ain't for everybody.
Just in case you wanna challenge yourself, I suggest Dirty for less 'art' and more 'rock'.

Yeah Sonic Youth is one of those groups you need to really listen to a LOT before you love them. Same with Pixies or Frank Black. When I 1st heard the Pixies I'm like "What is this country music?" now I don't know what the hell I was saying. Then when I started to get into Frank Black I expected him to sound like the Pixies but he didn't and I was like "What the fuck?" but eventually I grew to appreciate Frank as not better or worse-just different. Same with Sonic Youth. Pop music can instantly click with a lot of people but gets old fast and lacks that deeper level of true meaning. Alt music takes time to grow but when it does it never leaves you.. |

Best answer ever.
Honestly. The original question wasn't meant to be (too) flip. I just meant that I didn't understand the appeal. Multiple listenings IS a great way to unlock the mysteries of a great group/album.
The first FB and the C's album took 3. And can you imagine, at one point Exile on Main St. didn't make sense to me and I LOVE music.
Thank god that's all behind me.
As for Goo, I did like that album, but it was the most POPPY of all the stuff I heard.
Dirty Boots ahh. |

Oh, come on. I think anyone on a Frank Black forum is probably relatively knowledgable about music; just because someone doesn't like Sonic Youth doesn't mean they don't understand the music. I don't like Sonic Youth either, theswimmer. Having said that, I can understand why someone would like Sonic Youth, unlike, y'know, someone liking Lenny Kravitz or something.

hey jason. agreed. i can honestly saw i hated exile on main street, hunky dory, soul mining (thethe), ritual de lo habitual (janes addiction) and - interestingly - black letter days when i heard them first. now - they would probably make my top ten CDs. i guess its the sign of a good album if you can persevere and keep listening to it. i also reckon that albums i like instantly get overplayed and the novelty wears off too quick (i.e. strokes. ahem). i will admit that i do like sonic youths dirty album - but different strokes i guess (especially considering how i also own Herb Alperts greatest hits as well!).
cheers.

Swimmer, have someone make a "the best of Sonic Youth" CD for you and you'd probably like it. There are usually 3-4 amazing songs on each CD and then a lot of "wanking".
Who likes Lenny Kravitz? That guy sucks. I mean "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" is awesome, but other than that he goes down as the worst lyricist to ever put pen to paper.

I might ask the same question. Lenny Kravitz is horrible...he distills a chorus to the point of provoking nausea ('Fly Away', case in point.) When I was in Amsterdam last summer, I was strolling down some street and this guy drove by with his windows open cranking Lenny Kravitz at an unbelievable volume. I was just like "oooo-K, man...i guess right now you are really cool in your own little depraved, Kravitz-loving world" to myself and just kept on walking. Just a little story...pointless, yes, I know. |

I'm not sure how key this is, but Sonic Youth came very early for me in my quest for music, and completely blew my mind. I'm not sure if I could discover them now with seasoned-veteran ears and still have them make as much a difference as they did. I do love them though. Their two best albums are Sister and Daydream Nation, as in they broke all the ground. A lot of people are inclined to love one Sonic Youth album and hate another, so it might be difficult to get into them. I recommend those two as they are the most generally liked. I really disliked all their albums at first, when I first started getting into them. It's very acquired. |

My favorites are Confusion Is Sex, Evol, Goo, and Washing Machine, the last one being as good a choice as any for first-time listeners. In truth, it's kinda difficult to make any one recommendation to novices because, not only do all SY albums have their fair share of "noise", but each poses different types of challenges for the listener. By the way, anybody notice how most of Sonic Youth's music is just not fit for listening to in a car? |

Hey Atheist,
I totally fucking agree on Lenny Kravitz Suck Quotient but you picked the WRONG example dude....allow me to explain...
"You got to love and rub-a-dub" = Kravitz "Now you're stepping out for your rub-a-dub-dub" = Frank Black
I just thought that was funny.
Frank can make even a dumb line sound good.
You have to admit, purely heterosexually speaking, GOD DAMN I wish I had that guy's body. And it was white. Because it wouldn't match my head if I had his body. Because my head is white. And his is not considered white. And I like my head because it's like, me. And his is him. And like, I could still be me with his better body. But not if we just switched bodies. Cuz then he'd be a good looking faced guy with a dumpy white guy's body and I would be good looking white me with a black guy's body.
Anyway, huh? Sonic youth, mix tape. Yes I should. |

You know, Daydream Nation is praised by many as their best album, but I can not for the life of me fall in love with it. There was a point where I really liked it, but now it's only select songs. I think the problem is that it's soooo long. But the Trilogy? Holy shit! Goo and Dirty are their most pop albums. Experimental Jet Set, in my opinion, is the gap between the old, darker sound of their older albums and the new, more mature tone of the newer albums...which becomes aparent in Washing Machine. It has a really polished sound, but is still very heavy. See: No Queen Blues, Panty Lies. When I first heard Washing Machine I thought "man, these guys lost it!" but after returning to it later when I got a little older, I fell in love with it...it's an excellent album. A Thousand Leaves is slightly less accessable and takes a few more listens to really dig it (some really great tracks like Sunday, Heather Angel, Ineffable Me...). NYCG&F and Murray Street are both fucking hot albums...NYCG&F is flawless (well, except for Lightnin'), and Murray Street just follows the flow of excellence. I have yet to really listen to a while lot of their older stuff...It's less 'focused'. |

confusion is sex is a disturbing album, in my opinion they only got into their stride with sister, although evol did have some really good songs. goo is my absolute favourite sonic youth album. i saw the band live last year and they played kool thing- i could have wet myself i was so excited. i really like their videos because they are usually so bad, they look like some 1st year art student with no budget has made them. the video for tunic (song for karen) is fantastic. |

My favourite SY albums are albums like Dirty and Goo,just because they are the sweet spot between the easily accesible 'pop' sound and the freshly extravagant 'alternative' sound. Many of the other albums I love, but would require more patience,as they would be leaning mostly towards the radical experimental side. And if you had something totally on the pop side,it would be like Britney Spears or some shit like that. Therefore I think all the really cool groups usually find the sound somewhere down the middle. Nirvana and the Pixies were like this too, both awesome sounding, poppy-yet-alternative hybrid groups.
PS.Dirty Boots does kick ass. Have you heard the Rock n' Roll Heaven version? It's sweet. |

Hi Everybody, Mr. Mereubu here making a post-because I'm too lazy to make my own screen thingy and the Mrs. won't ghost write for me. Anyway, WHY aren't Sonic Youth art rock wankers? Same reason that Steely Dan aren't pussies. (Even though they really should be.)

Yeah, that's a good point about the rub-a-dub-dub line. I think Frank has a reason to say it where as Lenny just put it in there to finish the fucking verse so he get back to looking in the mirror and jacking off.
By the way swimmer, you think YOUR head wouldn't fit on Lenny's body? I think HIS head doesn't fit. He's got a giant round head and a small flat body. He looks like a bobble head doll. I'll agree he's a very fit specimen of a man, but all I see when I look at him is the giant hubrus it took to get and maintain that body. It goes far beyond fitness. He does it because he has to to sell records. In some ways I should admire his sacrifice because it's one of the rare times that men have to play the same game 90% of woman do to succeed. I wonder if he had to bugger his record exec on the way up as well?

Ugh, I hear ya, someday I'm going to post my opinion on the Breeders and lose lots of friends, you think my rants are long now... somebody's going to say the wrong thing like "What a great bass player Kim Deal is" and I'll just go fucking off, I'll tell ya!!!!
The only thing that's stopping me now is that I've got a huge staff meeting to prepare for.... |

'Confusion Is Sex' was a slow-burner for me...took awhile to grow on me but after a few listenings I started to appreciate it. It's got good - though sometimes slightly disturbing - lyrics too.

Yeah, "confusion is sex" is a manic record indeed. Took me a long time to get into it...there are some downright creepy parts to that album. But also some brilliant songs...'Kill Yr Idols' being one of them...'Inhuman' is another one.
One thing to its credit is that I've never heard anything quite like it before or since. |

I'm a huge fan of Sonic Youth too but it's not for everyone. My bros don't have the patience to listen to the albums a few times and for me that is what makes them so great. They just get better and better every year. I love them so much.
My advice is to avoid the SYR records for now, that is not the way to introduce someone to the Youth. SYR3 and SYR4 are the toughest for me to like and I actually sold back my SYR4 because even I thought it was just a bunch of noise. Now I just stick to the mainstream Geffen albums.
Give them Dirty if they can't listen to 10 minute songs. If they can, then give them A Thousand Leaves. My collection starts with Daydream Nation and ends when they leave the planet. I'm a SY thug for life. |
