All good points with maybe one or two exceptions. On this topic, for Frank Black's benefit, if airplay is what he wants, I hope he gets it. For me though, I kind of like it the way it is. Knowing that I can slip on the headphones and listen to something as great as the st francis damn disaster, while 90% of the world are slaves to mass media, is something I view as a bit of personal luxury. I am not sure I am ready to hear his music on the radio everyday - because I don;t know what it would signify about my own tastes and whether I would enjoy being part of the generic target audience for mass marketed music. If I ever win the lottery though, I am gonna buy 20,000 versions of every frank black album to reward him for being true to his art, and fans.

Good point, but at the same time, I do want other people to know about his music and listen to him, and not only would that be nice for me, but Frank would make a lot more money that way, but I guess him being played on popular radio all the time would make his music a lot less "special" kind-of. I do like being able to say that I listen to Frank Black and the Catholics and everyone wonders who the fuck I'm talking about, and thinks it's some 80 year old Christian band because they're called the Catholics (then I just play smoke up for them or show them the cover to Surfer Rosa and tell them it's the same guy in both bands)

I heard Colin Quin state on that show of his that RAP MUSIC is obviosly led to the decline of western civilization in the past 10 years. They could also say that for music too. Rap is 90% image and 10% music, and since it is the biggest seller on the market today, so-called "Rock" musicians are forced to compete with all the hype by stupifying their music and adding more "In-Your-Face gimmicks". They are so afraid of losing their major label, or so desperate to get signed that they compromise. And as far as bands like these "nostalgia groups" like the Hives-Stripes-Strokes go; these bands have always been around, the Corporations have just decided to bring them to you because they were tested somewhere in L.A. or wherever and they figured out they might sel for a time on the market. The labels want to make you think that you have a choice, but you have to choose from their stash. "Hey little buddy, if ya don't like Taproot, well here's a little cold play for you, Enjoy"

the blues isn't an art-form, it's a product-- not unlike computer chips and tampons.

Agreed. Hopefully, over time, the internet song swapping will take so much money away from record labels that they will climb back into their holes and leave music to the artists

i do wish frank would sell more records and more people would listen to him, the only drawback is having to see him in a venue of more than 3000 people...i only ever went to a "big" concert once...and it was to see the pixies open for U2.....i never went to a major venue again

...and evolving from the sea, would not be too much time for me, to walk beside you in the sun....

Frank Black and the Pixies occasionally get airplay on WXPN in Philadelphia. Its a public radio "singers songwriters" station that used to be run by the U of Pennsylvania but now its like a musical "NPR". I've heard Calistan, Headache, and Here comes your man occasionally. on it. When the the self-tiled album came out, Los Angeles got a lot of airplay on the "popular "alternative" stations as well as Hold onto your Ego.'

I'd probably actaully start listening to the radio again if FB was to be heard on it.

Does anyone have an opinion on the music channels on digital cable? I haven't concluded anything yet, because my attention's divided 10 times e to the power of x different ways right now. But there are no commercials on these channels, and I've heard songs that I haven't heard on Boston commercial radio, and that is a good thing. There are genre channels: new wave, 80s, 70s, oldies, rap, metal, alternative, new country, classic country, classical, etc. I've heard some obscure stuff. No Frank though. There's a radio station in the Boston area that plays eclectic "adult" stuff. They played "Here Comes Your Man" the other day, right after "There Goes My Girl," incidentally. Seemed a little sad. What about that satellite radio subscription service? Anyone into that?

Hey, frank black francis, describe the Pixies/U2 concert to me, please. What didn't you like about it? I was a big Pixies fan at the time, but stayed home... in fact, never saw the Pixies live. I've always wondered what I missed, as far as the U2 thing was concerned.

The last arena show I saw was REM at the Fleet Center. I'm not really an REM fan, and was FRANKLY disgusted by Stipe's rock star posing. Yes, sorry, he did some posing, to the squeals of high school girls, I might add, and I couldn't get behind it. This was the Monster tour. So, yes, I am soured on arenas, as well.

There is a local station in Clinton, Missouri- KLRQ 96.1 FM that is an independent station and it boasts being the 17th most listened to on the web.
This is the first time I have ever heard Frank Black & the Catholics on the radio. The guy says "This next band is FB&C, Frank Black is"....Then he pauses and says "Nevermind". I wish he would have finished his thought. He played Skeleton Man.

Initial instinct: Crank it up.

Wow, I'd love to hear "Skeleton Man" on the radio. I briefly considered archeology/geology while at university, but then I sold out.

In a strange way this could be really meaningful. It says that Frank Black was behind Nevermind. Cobain might have made it but Frank invented it and was the origin of the early 90s alternative expolsion.

In Israel they used to play 'Here Comes Your Man' and 'Monkey Gone to Heaven' a little bit when Death to the Pixies came out, oh so many years ago. Also 'Dig for Fire'. 'Hey' is for some strange reason really popular here as well, and LOTS of places have it on rotation.

I also heard some Pixies in music stores, in Israel and Belgium.

But I would really, really, really like to hear In Heaven on the Radio. I can just imagine the horror "In heaven... EVERYTHING. IS. FIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEE"

It's funny that you changed your qoute Bazza, because that's precisely what I did this morning. Had I rushed, I could have been two minutes late. But I thought, hell with it, I'll read the paper and have some cheerio's, and I was 20 minutes late. And that has made all the difference.

"Everything is New" is being released as a single, so the opportunity for some radio play exists...

Frank does get airplay its just that people don't know about it. The latest I know of was "My Favorite Kiss" from Show Me Your Tears, played on BBC2 Jonathan Ross 28/06/03. After the song Jonathan said Frank Black is one of the greatest showmen ever. Pretty encouraging if his new songs are already played 2 months before official release.

You can listen to that song on the BBC2 site until a week later from original broadcast.

I don't think it's known yet. Hopefully "Don't Clip Your Wings" makes it...

Today on the digital cable TV "Music Choice - Alternative" channel, they played "Hang On To Your Ego." It was the first time I heard Frank Black on any Music Choice channel. Some of the artist facts thay put on the screen: First album Frank ever bought was Meet the Beatles, and next 10 albums he bought were also Beatles records; Real name is Charles Thompson; Released album of B-sides called Oddballs; Used to be in alt-rocker band the Pixies; Self-titled solo debut released in '93(?) on Elektra; TOTY released in '94.

Only thing I didn't know was the thing about the Beatles records.

Was thata video or audio only channel. If the latter then it doesn't count, its just like radio. If it was video what was Hang on to Your Ego like?

Audio. If I remember the "Hang On" video, it featured a little kid who was supposedly Frank's brother, and Frank, and someone else, and occasional hallucinogenic image distortion, and maybe some text explaining a few things. Anyone have a better recollection? I'm not really into music videos.

There is a lot of talks in this topic about commercial music and so on. I decided a long time ago not to get too involved in those arguments. I think the best way to apprehend the problem is just to listen to stuff you like. For me the main criteria is that artists should write their own stuff, after that, if they are successful or not does not really matter as long as I enjoy their music. I mean, you have to admit that quality and commercial success can coincide sometimes, look at bands like Coldplay or Travis for instance...
