On another thread I mentioned how intense Pere Ubu's performance of "The Fevered Dream of Hernando Desoto" was. What are some of your favorite moments from live performances?
I've seen Frank maybe 8 times. My favorite show was at Karma in Boston. I was standing right next to a speaker and the sound kept cracking whenever the band got intense. My left ear drum tried to shimmy into my brain every time the audio cracked, but the band was so into it that night, unlike some nights, and I loved it. Anyway, here are some more great live moments I've been lucky enough to witness:
FB at Karma playing "The Holiday Song." First Pixies song I ever saw him do.
FB in Northampton, MA playing "Heloise." Phillips was doing most lead guitar this night, letting the songs breathe more than Gilbert does. This song was real smooth and sexy and dynamic.
Brian Wilson doing "Marcella." Ten-piece band playing real heavy. Yes, Brian Wilson, doing something heavy--not hard or fast (ooh, sounds dirty, eh?), but heavy. And, yes, I'm a total Brian Wilson tool, also, but will try not to talk about him too much on this forum.

My greatest Frank Black live moment will be the day that he tours to Australia, so I can actually see him play in order to have a greatest live moment. |

Seeing FB play for the first time in 95. Unforgettable. FB finishing the show with Annoucement in 96. Awesome. FB playing Pixies songs in his 2001 tour. (I missed the 99 tour!) Orgasmic.

Yah! "Gouge Away" was my favorite song back in college days. Big thrill when he did it live.
I can't remember what year I saw Weezer, but Placebo (yes, them again) opened for them.
Did anyone catch the solo shows Frank did opening for They Might Be Giants? I missed the show, but caught a record store appearance by both acts. TMBG played a few songs in-store, then Frank showed up and played a few songs, mostly from Teenager. Then he reintroduced TMBG by asking them to play the "constipated turkey" song. TMBG played "Birdhouse in Your Soul." After, Frank told them he had actually been talking about "Instanbul Not Constantinople." He then tried to entice TMBG into playing it by leading the crowd in a chant of "Istanbul! Istanbul!" Unfortunately, the crowd was heavily pro-Frank and wanted him to play more instead of deferring to TMBG. Nobody joined in the "Istanbul" chant! Frank stopped and said, "Am I the only one saying Istanbul?" He started the chant again. Just a few people joined him. He stopped and screamed, "Why am I still the only person in this store screaming Istanbul?" You had to feel for the two Johns, who were standing off to the side with sheepish looks on their faces. Finally, enough people shouted Istanbul and we were off. |

Greatest moments: Opening with "Man of Steel" at the first show I attended, watching FB&TC play from their own balcony at the 9:30 Club in 2000... |

Greatest FB moment.... Hmmm, seeing him for the first time in Sheffield back in 2001.
Favourite other gig moment, either
1) Getting pulled out of the crowd by Sebastian Bach, when Skid Row played Nottingham, and then injuring myself by stage diving back into the audience.
2) Getting on stage with Motorhead to attempt a stage dive and getting pounced upon immediately by security, this was just before Brian May came running onstage unannounced to play a few songs with the Motorhead boys.... what a guitar legend! This gig is available on DVD so there is a chance that my stage ordeal might be documented.
3) Seeing Alice Cooper get his head cut off at Wembley Arena....

Ah hah ha, that Motorhead moment sounds beautiful. I finally saw Motorhead last year.
Has anyone ever been castigated for getting too close to Frank and the band? He seems notoriously prickly about people encroaching his space as he performs. One fan climbed the stage at the Karma show in Boston. Immediately, the entire band stopped playing "Abstract Plain" and some middle fingers were flashed as security led the fan away. In Providence, Frank chided a guy for getting too close. He bitterly offered to let the fan play his guitar for him. There are better stories out there about that sort of thing, I'm sure. |

At the Sheffield gig in 2001, quite a few people got onstage, but I guess no-one was trying to get too close to Frank... people were getting on stage and taking a running jump back in, and Frank didn't seem to mind. In fact, he looked pretty pleased after the gig.

Sorry...
It feels like this show was such a long time ago (well it was!) and this really is the song I remember best. What I loved was that he didn't play guitar. He came close to the stage's edge and just stood there and sang like a god!
ps: Brendan, I swear I'm not teasing you. Just sharing. |

Yep, that was indeed Oct. '98 at The Metro. Also the first time we saw the band with Rich on gtr. When they started with 'Wave', the whole room did a double-take, and you knew this would be a great show. And it was... |

My greatest FB live moment was not during a gig but before a gig when I passed him in the street. followed him into a restaurant where he had dinner with the Catholics but I didn't dare go and talk to him so I just had a beer and waited till it was time to go. ... Later during the gig they played Gouge Away and Where Is My Mind? and I Love Your Brain... Afterwards i was standing near the place where they wre selling Tshirts, it was on the way to the backstage and the man put his hand on my left shoulder to make me understand i was in the way but he had already gone when i realized who it was.

Would the live sex show that I had the pleasure of viewing on my birthday in Amsterdam back in 2001 count as one of the greatest live moments, because 1) it was live, and 2) it was pretty great?

I've only seen FB once and that was immediately following the release of 'Cult of Ray' - the gig was fine but on that occasion there was nothing outstanding about the performance.
Seeing Bowie do 'quicksand', a porno version of 'fashion' and a mind-blowing version of 'stay' at the Glasgow Barrowlands was unbelievable though.
Saw J Mascis do an acoustic set at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow - he sang Carly Simon's 'Your So Vain' which was pretty crazy.
Luke Haines was at the same venue a year or so later and that was fantastic too. |

Providence 1993. My first FB show. It was a crummy little dump-of-a-dive. I got up real close and saw there was a piece of lined-paper in front on the mic. There were about thirty songs on it. He came out and just started ripping through em. Then the mic broke. As the the sound guy came out to fix the mic, FB came over to another mic and said he wanted to try something out. Off the cuff he sang DUKE OF EARL. It was one of those moments. |

the first time i saw frank on the 96 culf ot ray tour in portland, oregon and la luna was pretty amazing. he was sick that night and had been drinking quite a bit. he played 'mosh, don't pass the guy' and asked the few crowd surfing fools to please stop. then 2 or 3 songs later he started 'the creature crawling' and it soudned great.....but this one kid kept crowd surfing right in front of frank and frank stopped playing the song and yanked the kid up by his collar and arm onto the stage....there was a sturggle and the kid finally got away. frank took off his guitar and threw it across the stage and then walked off. in puzzlement the rest of the guys followed. this was only 10 songs into the set and people were pissed at this kid for ruining the show. especially me. i couldn't believe it....i had been waiting forever to see frank and finally go to go. i was 19 at the time. the show was almost going to be 21 and over but luckily for me it wasn't. after about 5 minutes or 10 maybe suddenly frank came walking back out onto the stage. he just stood there with a guinness and drank it while looking at the crowd smiling. then he said "I do apologize for my unprofessional attitude." then opened another guinness and said "But, much like the gentleman who i apologize for grabbing your shirt collar, grabbing a little cat by the scruff of his neck.....we've both had a couple of beers probably....it's just that i think i'm maybe a better drunk than him...i don't know."
then he says he's never done that before and it was a slow song and he was getting into it. then starts right into 'adda lee'.
so that's my worst and favorite moment in one...worst because i thought he was going to stop playing that night and best because it was so weird. ryan |

Oh, man! I'm my own bouncer tonight! That's the sort of thing I've heard a lot about, Frank getting mad at unrulies, but I never heard about him scuffling like that.
My first show was also on The Cult of Ray tour. I was disappointed, thinking he was capable of better, and he later proved me right. He seemed to switch guitars a lot back then, after practically every song. Anyway, that was also the first time I saw Reid Paley. Very entertaining. |
