Did anyone catch this doc about They Might Be Giants, co-starring Frank Black? It played at the Egyptian in L.A. this summer, when I wasn't around. Also it played in Boston, at the Museam of Fine Art (I think) - for the TMBG's anniversary (20th?)..

i went to it, at the Egyptian. mainly just to see the Frank interviews. i like TMBG, but i'm not obsessed or anything.. and i think MINK CAR is sort of a step down from recent previous stuff..

but it was interesting. the movie itself, as a documentary, i thought was pretty good but a bit too long (i think it's like over 2 hours)..

Frank's in it only a few times.. he talks about how he didn't like them at first, but he had a copy of FLOOD in his car so he would always pop it in out of boredom.. and then suddenly he became obsessed with them..

i think one of the most interesting parts of the doc is the interviews with the former Elektra exec (can't remember her name) who talks about that period when TMBG and Frank were there at the same time, and she left.. and she felt sorry for them because none of the new company people "got" them at all and had no clue how to market them.

both bands got zero support from the label after that point.. and when you think about it.. that was kind of the beginning of Frank's descent into (further) obscurity..

but anyway.. it'w worth seeing. i'm sure there'll be a DVD soon.

the whole thing made me wonder why someone doesn't make a Frank documentary.. maybe someday.

that seems like a difficult one to approach though.. i think the fans would be so critical..

anyway..

Their new record, "No!" is quite interesting.
