Wondering what you folks take to be the better of the Frank Black songs that don't appear on any of his albums. For example, my personal favorite is Jewel (R. Gabrels, F. Black and D. Bowie - on the Gabrels CD).

Pan American Highway is very very good, so is Pray for the Girls (if you can ignore the end part which is fucking annoying), and Sleep is also cool, but thats a cover I guess.
Ive got Big Bang Theory but didn't think too much about that one...

It blows my mind how prolific FB is. It's totally amazing that a song like PAH is an extra, an outcast from his huge catalogue of material. |

Announcement is awesome, just ahead of Pan American and Jewel. How Announcement was not conidered good enough for an album is beyond me. |

i absolutely love "man of steel". i heard it first on the x-files soundtrack, which im now embarrassed to admit i'd purchased for the sheryl crow song.

Nope. Living on soul is a b-side from All my ghosts. Fantastic song. FB also played that one in the Peel Seesions, and beliebe me is even better. |

My most favourite non-album song is "Pan Amercan Highway". But I also like "CAN I GET A WITNESS" very much. There are 2 versions: One is on "Oddballs", the other one on the Bonus-CD for Cult of Ray. I wonder why this excellent song is mentioned so rarely !? |

Can I Get A Witness is one of my least favorites. Both versions are the same unless I'm wrong...Oddballs is just a collection of B-Sides. |

Personally I wish Frank would play more of this kind of songs. But it's just a matter of taste, everybody's music taste is different. The version of "Can I get a Witness" on Oddballs is a "made over" version of the 4-Track Cult of Ray Bonus-CD. The latter version sounds more "straight".

The song is simply not 1:1 the same, there are slight differences in background, so probably it is a remix. The Oddballs version of "Can I get a Witness" has more synthesizer-effects in the background than the first version. |

Ahh, I don't wanna go any further with this. I'm just wondering if it's the same recording. One can tell by comparing the length, vocals, and other aspects of the song to tell if it's the same recording or if it's a different recording. His Kingly Cave from DW and SSMVGD are obviously different recordings. The B-side of Announcement and the Oddballs Announcement are the same recording, with the latter being a remix. |

How come no one ever mentions SURF EPIC as the cosmic mother of DOG IN THE SAND? Strangely when I aquired DITS (on Cooking Vinyl 2 months ahead of US release) I was surprised when I got to the title track that it was simply an exhumation of SURF EPIC's hypnotic riff. I wasn't dissapointed...just surprised. And I never hear anyone touch on this subject. Maybe I'm just obsessed. But I always have had a soft spot for the very weird and over-baked Surf Epic! I also absolutely love HATE ME...it's hilarious and puts me in a happy mood whenever I hear it. Since were on the subject of exhuming souls of B-sides and restructuring them for album tracks, who here will concurr that HIS KINGLY CAVE sounds like a risen phoenix called ANNOUNCEMENT? Have always felt the latter was re-tooled to become the former. Anyway, would love to hear comments.

Hey! Nobody has yet to mention "Breathless", have they? Or "Duke of Earl"? "Man of Constant Sorrow"? "Changing of the Guards"?
Man, those are all gems.

Breathless??? Where might that be found???
I also just realized this morning that VILLAGE OF THE SUN is a great tune.
There has been no other mention of the collaborations with Reeves Gabrels. JEWEL and 119 YEARS are both excellent. Must listens for all fans of FB. |

Hmm....as hard as I am trying, I don't see the similarity here, Tranmariner. They are both different sounding, with different chords and different melodies, different structures, etc.
Both are awesome, awesome songs though. So I guess that makes them similar. In that vein, I guess FB has been ripping himself off for years now. |

Agreed PTwin, the man is a totaly un-varied, one note artist. Everything is choice. How about a few crappy numbers to mix it up a little, Frank? |

PT and Speedy...I hope I didn't give the impression that I think Frank was ripping himself off...thats not what I was driving at. But with the case of Dog in the Sand and Surf Epic, there is a little more than just a hint of 're-interpreting' himself...which is NOT 'ripping-off'. I see a ghost of Announcement in His Kingly Cave...merely an observation, and was wondering if others feel this too. Going back to artists re-interpreting themselves, it's VERY common...and it is necessary. Look at Pete Townshend...the man is obssessed with his themes...look at Brian Wilson...the man is themed with obsession...look at N'Sync...the group is dead from non-recalibration...and it's SUCH a pity too! However, maybe my matting of Announcement and His Kingly Cave is the opening chord structure...I don't know...now I'm confused! Maybe I need re-interpretation!
