I guess those of you lucky enough to live in the US who have seen Frank live recently are better placed to answer this question, as is Sarah from Spinart....

Whats the sound of the new album, is it similar to the more recent stuff or has Frank changed his style again? I was reading an interview with Frank from just before the release of BLD and DW, whereby he mentionned that he ideally wanted to write an album and make use an an orchestra. Does any of the new tracks feature an orchestra???

I think that Manitoba was pretty full, but obviously I can't confirm it. Look at posts by Echo Park on the topic, I forget what he said.

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by full?? I assume you mean that you have heard that it has an orchestra arrangement.

Ive been recently listening to Neil Young's song 'A Man Needs a Maid' and thats one song that goes perfectly with an Orchestra arrangement. Metallica also pulled it off pretty well when they recorded that live album with the SF symphony orchestra (is that who they were??).

I'm well looking forward to this new album, but Sept seems too far off.

Yeah, full as in more orchestrated, but not playing with an orchestra. Feel free to correct me, but I think there were nine or so instruments on Manitoba plus 5 or 6 vocalists. Generally, I tihnk that FB does pretty well (especially so in the TOTY/Orange days) with Eric being the one-man keyboard orchestra.

I agree with you on the Neil Young, and Metallica did indeed use the San Francisco orchestra... I believe they even did an arrangement of stuff from John Williams' score to the original Star Wars trilogy which included The Imperial March and The Force.

I have a lot of classical/contemporary classical leanings, and would love to see FB try out that direction, though I'm not sure if that would go against his "live=CD" stance, since he probably wouldn't tour with an orchestra, even a small one.

i'm listening to it right now, and that sounds about right to me! there's some great horn action going on in this song.

and the rest of the record sounds full as well, but not nec. in an orchestral sense - i don't think there's any string section action going on or anything. that said, it's a beautiful record. all still live to two track, but somehow there's a real variety: each song has very much its own sound. currently my favorite is "coastline", which clocks in at under two minutes and is pretty much fb-and-a-guitar but quite lovely.

i've always been bad at describing things i love, but i gotta combine adjectives and say this one's awesometastic.

so no, it's not done w/an orchestra, and it isn't a huge musical departure from the last two records, but i think it's a collection of songs that really showcase his talent - each song is great in a different way. there's hopeful, there's sinister, there's a chorus at the end...

Thanks Sarah. To take a point from another thread, are all the tracks Frank originals, or is there a cover version in there?

to the best of my knowledge, they are all originals.

(if this is the "everything is new"/"everything is wrong" question, while i don't know the latter song, the former actually starts with the line "everything is new...")

Cheers for your reply Sarah, if we were face to face I'd slip you a ten pound note everytime I asked you a question. From what you have been saying this sounds very promising..... sorry for all of the questions but how long is the album in terms of minutes??? Are there any lengthy songs or is it like Devils Workshop and the majority of Franks work, short punchy classics?

"coastline" is a neil young tune, but not sure if this is the same song that frank is performing. unlike sarah i don't have the new album yet. :(. the neil young lyrics do seem to fit in with some of the stuff he's singing about.

"Down on the coastline, Highway One
People headin' out for the sun
That's where I found you,
long time ago.

You're my angel, you're my queen
You're my best friends in between
We don't back down from no trouble
We do get up in the mornin'.

Oooweee, baby, what a night
That old moon sure is shinin' bright
We'll be dancin'
'til the mornin' comes.

High on the mountain top
above the clouds
No wonder we get a little loud
We don't back down from no trouble
We do get up in the mornin'."

There were rumours about a hard rockin' tune on the new album. Any chance of that?

nope, the fb "coastline" is a different one!

while they're certainly not all sleepers, i don't know if you could classify one as really "hard rockin'" in the traditional sense. no bustin' out the black sabbath moves on this one...

Jose - Nadine is sort of rocking, but not REALLY hard rock. I was thinking about something like 'I Want R&R', 'Velvety' or 'Pong/Thelossocracy', let alone 'U-Mass'

the most rock i had ever encountered live was I Want Rock'n'Roll...that is until they played Nadine right after it.
