The motherbanger thread got me into trying to get the lyrics of "Le cigare volant" cause I love this song.
Here's what I got: any correction/addition ?
We played a battle ? me and my brother ? ? They were fighting ? like no others
Le cigare volant, it's true, once was above us We wondered was it hate or someone that loved us In a year since we had ?
Got this feeling in our bones For the icon we were shown It tooks us 20 years to learn the sacred images ? We can't escape It was a childhood ?
Well so silently he ? And so say we ? And we wandered on the hill And we wondered ever will (he) come back, we wait I will postulate It was a childhood ? |

BTW, showing my ignorance here: Went out to dinner the other night and saw none other than "Le Cigare Volant" on the wine list. Guess everybody else knew that already;)

I ain't makin any promises, but this is the closest I've gotten to cracking the sucker.
We played A battled raged In my brother Dragged an American flag in the mud Cause that was our druthers They were _____in the day like no other
Le Cigare Volant and his truth once was above us We wondered was he hate or someone that loved us In the years since we have grown up to know this
Got this feeling in our bones For the icon we were shown It took us twenty years to learn The sacred image it has burned We cannot escape It was a childhood fate
Well so silently he shined And so, say we, divine And we wander on the hill And we wonder if he will Come back We wait
I will postulate It was a childhood fate |

on my copy Frank is definately singing this: We played a battled raged Me and my brother Draged an American flag in the mud cause that was our druthers They were fine and simple days like no others
Le Cigar Volant it's true once was above us. He wondered was he hate or someone that loved us. In the years since we have grown up to know this.

I believe it a reference to seeing a UFO, though it does appear it could be taken to have some religious conotations...I belief it's about seeing a ufo, and wondering what is their motive for the visitation... Le Cigare Volant translated means 'the flying cigar', the French term for flying saucer. Perhaps some of our french friends can correct me if I'm wrong. |

You're half right... Le Cigare Volant does mean Flying Cigar, but it's not the usual term for 'flying saucer' (we say 'soucoupe volante').

Is the "japanese" version an acoustic one which fades away at the end? If so I have it.

I've always thought that this song was somehow connected to Frank's religious upbringing, church, sunday school, or whatnot (not a long way to go given his other work in this area) with "Le Cigar Volant" being some kind of humerous slang take on God, as in "The Big Enchillada" above them. Was he someone who was mad and angry as in the old testement god, or was he someone who loved them -- a common conflict I would think in regards to the Judeo-Christian god who's at once fire and brimstone and loving heavenly light and forgiveness. The feeling int heir bones at the icons they were shown - religious icons filing them with that spooky feeling that as kids you might get from learnign about the 'magic' of your particular religion.
And I thought the next lyrics went "in the year since we have thought/ often of this..." kinda like how those first experiecnes with sunday school or church stick with you even if you eventually reject it or grow beyond it. BUt as many of Frank's songs speak to, you can't really ever escape that original feeling (as in the song) and it stays with you in one form or the other - "they were fine and simple days like no other" kinda makes me think he's feeling nostaligic for those early days of not knowing what stuff meant really, which took him "tweny years to learn"..
And of course at the end of the song he and his brother, they're wondering if he's gonna come back -- to me this refers to Jesus, as they were taught he would, in Sunday school, or whatever.
Anyway, that was my take on it. This song gets stuck in my head pretty often.

yes, the japanese version fades away at the end...I dont know if there's some different version, and definetly the "cigar volant" refers to one of the most common shape of flying saucers ( never seen one though!) |
