Hey gang, just wondering what you guys think of Super Audio CD's?
As a bit of an audiophile, i gotta say these babies really take the cake.
Last nite i was listening to a friends copy of the remastered Rolling Stones, and there were two things that were quite obvious:
* tape hiss sounds nice. On 16bit CD's, it sounds terrible. On SACD, it's a nice, almost comforting sound.
* there was a spot where there's a high-pitched guitar solo, with scrapes of the string, etc, and we A->B'd the CD and SACD versions, and the CD sounded like digital distortion. It was cut short, and sounded blechy. The SACD sounded sweet..just like it sounds coming out of a nice tube amp.
On top of that, the SACD sounded much more rich, full and three dimensional. CD is flat and dull in comparrison.
After hearing this, it's gonna be hard to buy regular CD's...
Anyone else have an experience like this? |

I've always liked the SACD or DVD-A concept, although what I'd really like to see is a practical analog format. I've never had the chance to listen to any SACDs, but I imagine it sounds great. The main issue though, is the fact that there isn't a very large catalog, and thats what SACD or DVD-A needs to push it in to the mainstream.

Hey Carson- yeah, it'll take a little while to get mainstream.
The Stones just released like 20 SACD albums, remastered, so that should boost popularity there. (Smart making them hybrids too, they'll play in reg. CD players too.)
Not too crazy about DVD-A tho, it's still a million times better than CD, but SACD has a considerably greater frequency range (something like 8mhz!), where as DVD-A is still only 96khz. (Or can it go to 192?)
I think it makes a massive difference to get as much range as possible in there... Although you can't 'hear' it, it's still sound, and it's still vibrating your eardrum and affecting the rest of the sound..
I think analog is toast.. It'll still be recorded that way, but what was the last suitable analog format? Cassettes? SVHS sounds pretty good too actually..heh..

From what I've read SACD does sound more promising than DVD-A, I'm glad to hear that the Stones have released so many.
As for analog, It probably is on its way out (other than vinyl), but it'd be great to have a convenient format where it wasn't about how many bits and khz it stores.
