i have a kitten who is about 7 months old. last week her food ran out and i couldn't find the same brand at my local stores (i've heard that you're supposed to stick with the same stuff) .. so to tide her over i was giving her raw chicken and tuna, which i give her as a treat sometimes (she loves it).. but now that i've got her new food again she's hardly eating it and i'm a little worried..

i mean, will she just get hungry enough and realize that it's not going to be all about chicken and tuna? or did i totally spoil her?

advice?

Yes and yes. You totally spoiled her, but she should eventually go back to her food if you withhold the chicken and tuna. (As my mother always tells me in reference to my picky daughter, "No one ever starved with food in front of them.") You do have to be careful about giving cats tuna, though; they get jaded and won't want to eat anything else. Does she usually eat dry food? If so, maybe you can use a little bit of canned food as a transition food to slowly lure her back towards the dry stuff. Good luck.

I have heard the oil in the tuna is addictive to cats - who knows whether this is true or not. Anyway, I agree with Sarah, she won't starve...she just has to realize the yummy chicken tuna combo is gone. I give my cat one little scoop of wet food at night, as "dinner" and that seems to have cured his picky habits towards the dry food.

Keep the kitten faith!

my cats eat only dry food. Occassionally canned food for a special treat, it's good for their coat. It's not too big a deal switching brands, but the higher quality the food, the better the health of your cat, especially when they are kittens, that's the most important time. So buy the best food possible. And if need be, and a little canned food to her diet. It's kinda like high octane gas makes your car run better and last longer and give off less omissions, yet more exspensive.

My 2 cents.

while i'm at it, and i have this panel of experts, i have another kitten question:

where do you draw the line between healthy kitten play, and kitten scratching and biting too much?

my kitten is very affectionate and playful and all that.. but often, out of the blue, i'll be pettting her or whatever and she'll attack my hand, biting and scratcing like crazy. and i always rempremand her by yelling "no" and swating the ground by her with a newspaper or something (i never hit her).. is this behavior normal and will it subside, or should i be doing more to discipline her?

some friends stayed the night last week and she terrorized them all night, scratching them and whatnot.. that's why i bring this up..

thanks again..

Two words: spray bottle. Fill one with water & keep it near you. When she's being particularly evil, just give her a little spritz and a very disappointed sounding "Nooo." After a while she'll associate the spraying with the biting and lay off of you some. (We once had a cat who, as a kitten, would wait until people were helplessly seated on the toilet and then attack their ankles. The spray bottle was the answer.) I have to keep a bottle by the bed right now b/c our six month-old kitten chews my hair in the night and is a terrible toe biter. Anyway, it may sound sadistic, but I originally got the idea from my vet. So, mist away in good conscience!

Little Black Francis; just wanted to say that it is good to give your cats some wet food on a regular basis - the ash in dry food can give them urinary issues if that is the only thing they eat. Just an FYI.

Also, the spray bottle is a miracle worker - I agree wholeheartedly. Although my kitten became immune to it and used to just run around with wet marks all over her, seemingly unaffected.

i've heard that dry food is better for their teeth though.. they sure do love the wet though.. my kitten thinks she's all that now.. like, she won't touch Iams or even Frisky's.. nothing but the good stuff..

For my cat he has dry food during the day and a very small amount of wet food at night. Honestly, the urinary issue is a bigger one then the teeth (which are also important of course) - if they get a blockage, they can die.

i give my twin cats get dry food during the day and they share about a can at night-some days just a half can between 'em. the problem is, we just moved, and now have ot lock'em in our shed at noght cos they wander back to our old house, and we have to basically starve them durin the day so as to keep them around. i know it sounds terrible but one day they'll get hit on the road! we'll just have to make them settle down.

say anything mean about joey, and i'll punch you. hard. on the shoulder.

yeah...I lost a cat from that. he would get sick and then get better. finally it just got him.

the vet said that fixed male cats have a greater risk of dying from it.

she's actually sleeping. that's why she's falling out :)

i can't keep her in the carrier for long because she hates it. surprisingly, traveling with her out in the car wasn't too difficult. i was kind of worried it could be a nightmare, but she just chilled most of the time, as seen in exhibit a.

Straight up! I'm currently driving the Honda that I learned to drive on twenty years ago, and it's still in pretty good shape. The interior's falling apart, but the engine's just fine.
