Is it just me or does it seem that FBATC have settled down into a more steady and predictable setlist for this tour? I saw them like 3 times on the last tour and saw them play three completely different setlists with a unique order and song selection.
Does this kind of irk anyone else? I loved the show at the El Rey this Tuesday but it pretty much seemed to be the same set as has been posted in this Forum over and over again.
I'm going to see him in San Diego and I hope he mixes it up a little bit more. It'd be great to hear some Freedom Rock or Fiddle Riddle or something that we haven't heard for a while...
Thoughts?

i think that the band has been playing a LOT lately - this is the 3rd or 4th tour in a year and certain songs are starting to really gel - perhaps they are just playing what they feel is the best of what they've got. the sets are still varying more than most bands, plus each performance has its own character, energy, etc. they also probably don't realize that people travel to 2-3 shows per tour and therefore might be hearing repeat songs. look at the two shows in chicago and you'll see a HUGE difference in sets. i met a few people in pittsburgh who had seen a few shows of the tour and they reported some set difference, but that was also earlier in the tour. maybe they've just found their groove.
that being said, i wish there was more variety, especially if more shows are going to be sold on hearitagain.net after this tour

I just wish that they would play a more uniform distribution of old & new songs. I personally would like to hear at least one or two songs of off EACH album, plus the newer material. Sure, the old songs have been "done" live and they want to give some exposure to the newer material, but I LOVE those old songs. so bring em on!
I would prefer hearing older FB (both solo and Catholics) more often as opposed to the same five or six Pixies songs during every show. Anyone with me on this? |

I think you guys been smokin too much weed. The last handful of shows have had more or less the same songs, but before that...variety out the wahzoo. That's part of what makes them so unique from other bands; while 90% of the others play the exact same set every night, Frank and the boys switch it up. Go back and look at the old posts of setlists and you'll see what I mean. |

Bart- I know you're right. The first two times i saw FB&C play (right before Dog in the Sand came out, and right after) they played a great variety of stuff! I wasn't saying they never HAVE, just saying that I wish they would still do that these days...i just don't want them to "leave behind" the older material, that's all. |

Recent shows have seemed similar; I'd like more variety but I'm damn happy they play without a setlist. I'd love it if they pulled out 1826 and just wailed away on it.
As for Pixies songs, I love hearing the Catholics versions of them. But it would be cool if they varied them up with other Catholics/solo/pixies stuff. I heard they rehearse at least over 50 songs before the tour. Anyway, yeah, I could go for more variety and jamming.
blah blah blah!

Well I'm glad someone said something because this is a hot topic between me and my brother.
My brother agrees mostly with Boney, that the setlists have been a little too much alike lately. But his bigger issue is what Frank has so many super songs, songs like Ole Mulholland and Hostest on Teenager, Cult of Ray stuff, that are just off the charts. And yet when you go see Frank live you get John the Revelator or Black Rider. He'd like more variety like the post about 2 songs from each album.
Now I'm torn because I can see his point. I love some songs that I know might never ever be played again, like Announcement, or Bad Wicked World. And yeah I was lucky to see those live back in the jumpsuit tour days, but he hasn't and it wasn't his fault that he wasn't 18 plus back then.
Yet, yet-yet-yet, deep down I really only care about one thing: How Frank loves his job. I want Frank to like what he's doing and have fun. No setlist? I love it. I want those guys to be as solid as they have always been and love playing and touring so I can go see them more and more and more. The Catholics are very special.
I think these guys know what they're doing and I trust their setlists. No complaints here. |

Frankly(huh huh), I don't mind Frank performing covers. On the contrary, I believe that his versions of 'Remake Remodel', 'The Black Rider' and especially 'John the Revelator' are among the best songs I've ever heard. 'John the Revelator' particularly, is one that I think should appear on an album very very soon.
I do wish there would be more songs from the non Catholics album. Nowadays he seems to be playing only Los Angeles, Brackish Boy, Calistan, Headache and Men in Black from them. Earlier this tour he did 'Thelossocracy' and 'Freedom Rock' but they have disappeared from the sets. Also, a couple of different Pixies tunes would be nice, and I'd LOVE to hear 'I Think I'm Starting to Lose it' 'Billy Radcliffe' and 'The Pan American Highway'. |

I realize its hard for Frank and the boys to satisfy everyone, especially with such a diverse and substantial back catalogue of music and albums...and of COURSE i would rather they keep on happily touring and playing sans set list if that means I can get to see them kick ass live! and I always will, any plausible chance I get.
But that doesn't make me want to hear the older songs any less. |

i think the other hard part is determining what the audience wants to hear. i mean, i think i'd walk away very upset if i didn't hear bullet or jane at a show, but i'm sure there are 5x as many minor fans who would be pissed with no where is my mind, a song which i don't need to hear live (especially considering its the least "catholicized" of the pixies tunes). to us hardcore fans there are show stealers (like the afformentioned jane and bullet, or i want rock and roll, or nadine) and then to lesser-core fans they want to hear pixies stuff, l.a. and headache. not that there is anything wrong with wanting to hear those songs, but you can see how its a hard mix.
would you guys drop your favorite 5 of the normal batch to hear some lesser known gems you might not like as much? for me, i think i'd be a little upset if bullet, jane, iwrnr, nadine and gouge away were dropped and were replaced by end of miles, oddball, are you headed my way, the scene and skeleton man. but if it was man of steel, sir rockaby, fields of marigold, the man who was too loud and billy radcliffe i'd go nuts. its so hard to please all of us.
i'm rambling and i apologize

True enough, but for the record, Skeleton Man is amazing live and I would really like to hear End of Miles once, but I agree with you on the rest. Except that I've heard Fields & Sir Rockaby, but I could still hear them again. Since I'm rambling anyway, Whiskey in your Shoes is another great live one. There, now I'm done, but you can see that I'm only further proving BF's point. |

I'm going to jump in again and say, yeah, I wish they'd vary it more. Aside from the opening of the Slim's show, when I heard about hearitagain I really thought we'd get some more eclectic sets but I guess that's not the case, which is really surprising as the last tour seemed a lot more varied.
I'm glad they play sans setlist, and that they've Cattholicized the Pixies songs but I hope next time they tour they mix it up a lot more and extend more songs too. They're all great musicians and I'd love to just let them jam out on songs.
And that's that. |
