Nobody really knows, but the media likes to jump to conclusions and sell it as a scoop. It is generally accepted that things went a little sour between them, but I don't think there's a single quote (at least not from FB/BF) disparaging the other. There's speculation that Kim wanted more control, that Kim starting her own band (of course, the Breeders) while still with the Pixies did not sit well, and that conversly, FB's early work on his own solo disc which we all know and love upset things. The important thing is it's all speculation at this point. I think Frank always cites that the reason they wouldn't do it is that it would kind of be selling out - why would they do it, except for money, and also that The Pixies were a group of people at a certain time in their lives and in a certain place, and that they've all moved from there so even if they got back together, they really wouldn't be The Pixies. Anyawy, I stand to be corrected on any of the above, but this is what I know of it. |

Dean's exactly right. I think that the media enjoys injecting drama and speculation into their stories and haphazardly passing them off as "fact." I think Frank and Kim wanted to move in separate artistic/musical directions, and that is why the Pixies broke up. Now, to assume that there is some kind of animosity between them and calling that the main cause is just plain presumptious...i'm sure nobody at NME is good friends with either Kim or Frank, and since I've read no actual quotes in the press from either that supports this notion, I take it all with a grain of salt.

yeah, something seemed to shift during the pixies' time together between frank and kim. they seemed kinda close at the beginning, private jokes onstage etc.

i would hate for them to get back together. honestly. i know frank does alot of pixies stuff these days with the catholics but i cant see him or kim playing on the same stage doing pixies songs. im sure joey and dave would go either way but....

I would never listen to anything NME say because there magazine is nothing short of a substitute for shit role.... you know its good to have on hand when you run out of the quality toilet roll at Uni. They are idiots.
I was reading through MOJO (which is a decent British music mag) about a year ago when they had a decent article about the Pixies. It mentionned their rise and their break up and it was a long and pretty good article. As far as I can remember it mentionned that after Doolittle things started to get a little tense between the band. During the early days they would meet backstage after each gig and critique their performance.... however after Doolittle there was alot of silence backstage after gigs, and nobody really talked that much (I think that Joey Santiago was quoted as saying this). It also mentionned though that one time Kim turned up pissed to a gig and couldn't play bass properly so Black Francis lost his cool and hurled his guitar at her..... I'm pretty sure that it said that Black Francis was getting pissed with Kim's wayward ways of being a bit of a druggy, and that Frank was nothing more than an occasional drinker and smoker of pot.
Obviously whatever you read you have to take with a pinch of salt as reporters often inject bullshit into what they write to make a good story, but Mojo is a pretty respectable magazine, alot more respectable that that uncomfortable (but regretably sometimes necessary) arsewipe known as NME.
Obviously I would have loved to see them but they gave up when they had released 4 cracking albums, so maybe that was the best thing for them to do. And without them splitting up there would be no Catholics, which are equally as good a band as the Pixies.

Is this the artical your thinking of Stuart?
HELLO GOODBYE 9: JOEY SANTIAGO & THE PIXIES Interview by Martin Aston Mojo, November 1997 (December issue). Transcribed by C. Gourraud for Alec Eiffel.
"Kim was headstrong and wanted to include her own songs, to explore her own world. The way I think Charles saw it, the band made pizzas, not cookies. Before we made Bossa Nova, we were even going to fire her, after a gig in Frankfurt, where we found her hanging out in her hotel room, with no intention of playing. But our lawyer convinced us to try and work it out., to give her a warning or something. You know, I blocked that incident out of my head, that was too heavy for me. Kim couldn't believe I'd be party to it but I told her, she didn't seem happy, so why hang around? In the end, Kim realised it was Charles's bag, that he was the singer, but they kinda stopped talking after that". Joey Santiago.

One thing I absolutely hate about those MOJO and NME retrospectives is everytime there's a 5 page article on the Pixies, the trash their last two albums. Now, at the time these albums were under-loved, but come now most contemporary listeners find them to be just as good.
Mark Prindle had a good line for the change of style for the last two albums, "just in case you were worrying Black Francis was relying a bit too much on cheap laughs". But I swear most English magazines go absolutely crazy for a fresh band's first album or two and then that's it. |

No this isn't the Mojo article that I read. The one I read was published I think just as DITS and Pixies B-Sides collection were released. And you are bang on Itchload with the slagging off of the last two albums.... it mentionned that after Doolittle the Pixies were a shadow of their former self, which is just bullshit. But apart from that little hiccup (which is down to someones opinion I guess) it was a good article.
Bossanova and Trompe are as good as the first two albums..... its like the idiots who claim that Godfather 3 is a shite movie.

Hmmm, I originally wrote 'equally as good if not better...' then edited it. I don't know, they are fucking good, and at least on a par with Pixies, but the two bands are very different so I wouldn't want to say which ones better.

I love them both, sometimes I listen to more Pixies sometimes Frank Black. I guess nowadays its Frank Black & Catholics as they have more albums to choose from. I'm definately looking forward to the new album, and I'm ready to hop on a plane and fly home to England as soon as they confirm dates in the UK...... thats if SARS doesn't get me.

mojo article also reported that Trompe Le Monde was their best. So they aren't entirely bashing their last 2 albums (which to me are the best) it's not in the article but in the album catalog review which was on the same page

Deciding who's better, Pixies, FB solo or the Catholics is on par with deciding which child you love the most, isn't it? Although I don't have any children, I do have two dogs. |

Y'know, I always tended to think the Pixies' earlier work was more "jokey." I could be wrong, though.

Sense of humor would definitely be a cure to the sickness that is modern rock music! Linkin Park-case in point!...."craaaawwwwling in my skiiiiiiiiiiin".........QUIT YER WHINING YOU LITTLE BITCHES! just as bad on the tv!
what you get is a bunch of whiny little teenagers with a music video set in nuclear winter either singing like they are constapated or whining whilst moving their arms about like a rapper with every word they say. i never understood why people always wear their trousers down past the apex of their hips and still keep the belt on....then they try and stand ankle to ankle or toe to toe trying to make their feet as parallel as possible....

I had the exact same think to say to/about Nirvana/Pearl Jam and all those other "My life is so hard" whiners round about the early 90s. Sinead O'Connor once quoted Joni Mitchell as saying "Sometimes I really hate this job." At least Joni recognized that sometimes this CAN be a job, and thus approached it as "Sometimes it's not all roses". Usually if you make a lot of money doing something, there's going to be some dogshit involved. If you don't like your job, polish up your resume, use your royalty checks to go back to school, learn a new trade, and QUIT. At the time of Nirvana's whining, I worked in community organizing with poverty-level families who had barely two bits to feed their family on, and all I could say about these "Oh, my work has no meaning, I'm making too much money and I'm afraid I'm going to be perceived as selling out and I can't take the pressure" brats was Shut the Fuck Up. Cash your royalty check, buy some fashionable clothes for that herion baby of your and Shut The Living Fuck Up. If you don't like your job, quit. |

I just realized that I probably came off rather bitchy, but this whole concept about whining about your job is one of my pet peeves. We all hate our job sometimes: if it was perfect all the time, we wouldn't ask to be paid to do it: we'd volunteer to do it! And many of us do: we play our music for the sheer joy of it, we all don't pay our bills with our music. The things we do to pay our bills all involve some bullshit: "that's why we get the big bucks." There's sounding off about a crappy day at work (or if you're a musician, a particularly bad night or a lousy road trip or some crappy press) and then there's whining for the sake of whining, which Cobain, Vedder, Stipe, et al do ad nauseum. |

Yeah...uh..I realize that part of what made the Pixies great was their sense of humor, but can you guys honestly say there's no room for seriousness in rock music? From what I can tell, Frank's new album will be pretty serious, and some of my favorite artists like Joy Division and Nick Drake were serious. I agree with you about the awful MTV bands who take themselves so seriously nowadays, but honestly, how many bands other than the Pixies were funny and not annoying? |

I have to agree too, like what do you have to whine about re: Linkin Park, they are young, north American, white, rich males - cry me a freakin river. Try being a woman, as John Lennon once said "Women are the niggers of the world" Cmon sisters help me out! |

And lets not forget the Beatles and the Rolling Stones themselves, (either/both of whom anybody who is being honest will admit as an influence in rock and roll) Both had/have terrific senses of humor in their music and their regular lives, yet both also wrote great serious songs and albums as well. I believe this well-roundedness is really what seperates the universally great from those bands who only satisfy one mood, or one particular age in live. Joy division only satisfied me when i was depressed, and in my late 20;s. They were great at what they did, but that only did that one thing. You can find a Pixies/Stones/Beatles/Elvis/FB tune/album/era to satisfy any age, any mood. It really is what seperates the men/women from the boys/girls.

That, my friend, is wailin' the blues. But the great thing about blueswailer's is that they're doing is as part of that universal humanity, a we're in this boat together/we've all been there kind of thing. The people I'm whining about are those people who don't want to bring you in, a "I'm more miserable than you can ever imagine, I have a special kind of hurt that you'll never understand" with the implication that they're better than you. And they take it offstage, they get sucked up in this whole self-pity thing until they can no longer see any joy or beauty in life. Then they start whining.
Great blueswailers, on the other hand -- you can still see them striving to find that one silver lining, even if its only the fact that their issues ("Love Hurts" is an example) are universal and we can all drink about it together. Plus, I've never seen a great bluesman/woman who didn't have a (albeit sometimes dark) sense of humor. The great country singers are the same way: universal, populist, human, and at times, humorous. |
