Hey all,
I know I've been taken to task for name-dropping on these forums in the past, but I thought some of you might get a kick out of this.

I just got off the phone with the great Mose Allison, and near the end of our interview, we started to talk about all the rock and pop artists who've done covers of his songs, like The Who, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Costello and John Hammond, Jr., among others.

I wondered if Mose was aware that a band called the Pixies had actually written and recorded a song ABOUT him, as opposed to by him, and here was the 74 year-old hipster's response:

"Oh, yeah, yeah! I know about that! That was a Boston band, wasn't it? Somebody sent it to me. You know, I'm real flattered when something like that happens, man. It all helps. I tell everybody, look man, other musicians have helped me more than anybody else. You know, either by doin' my stuff or recommending me, or whatever. It's always meant a lot to me, and I got a real kick out of that one."

Mose is one of the coolest cats out there, and he still plays over 150 days a year all over the world. If you're unfamiliar with him, you should seek out some of his back catalog. He's truly one of a kind.

It's also cool to know that Frank and company's little tribute made something of an impact on the man, when most would assume he wouldn't dig that kind of stuff.

Wow, peter, that's great... also that you're talking to Mose Allison! Is this for professional reasons or anything?

I listen to 'Creek Bank' a lot, it's such a damn good record.

From a 1991 Options magazine interview with Black Francis:
"'I have this one song called Allison, and it's about Mose Allison, but you'd never know it. It's based on a stoned conversation I had with this L.A. Times guy who was talking to me about Mose Allison. He tried to fit the essence of Mose Allison into a nutshell for the purpose of our conversation. I really clicked with me. I don't remember exactly what it was he said because I was so stoned, but I had just seen Mose Allison play that very week and we were talking about him and he had sort of summed him up philosophically in a nutshell, as it were. I went 'Yeah, that's it.'

Y'know what I mean?

So I wrote 'Allison,' and it turns out that it's this song where I try to elevate Mose Allison into a science fiction character who moves through time and space, from one galaxy to the next, bringing his message of blues and music to the people. . .'

Black Francis' mother took 'Allison'-the-song to Allison-the-man. 'She went to see him play in Rhode Island,' says Black Francis. 'During the breaks she took a copy of a magazine article, in which they talk about the song, and showed it to him.' But Mom Francis was a bit too late. 'He told her that his 30-year-old son had already played Allison to him! Can you believe that? He already knew of us, knew the song. that made me so happy. He's really the only one who matters in terms of hearing what it's about. Who knows whether or not he got it or understood it or anything else; I'm just happy that he knew about it.'"

i thought the song was originally to be called 'alison' but elvis costello was already releasing a song called that, and frank decided to put it about mose allison. go figure.

Did it for my work, but I pretty much get to pick what I want to cover, so I jumped at the chance to speak with the man. Very nice guy, so down to earth and layed back - much like you'd expect.

I've got a free ticket to go see him play with a great bass player in a room that seats 98 people, but it's an hour away and I don't have reliable transportation so it looks like I'll have to miss it!

The story you heard is wrong. Elvis Costello's song came out way before the Pixies. Neither had anything to do with the other.

And by the way, Kim Deal is weak. She would be nothing if not for Frank.

Can't help if Kim is a half talent heroin addict. Everyone gets a chance at being lucky in life. She had hers when she answered an ad in the paper and got with the pixies.

Ask ANYONE if they remember anything she's done beside the blatant wannabe Pixies song "Cannonball" and unless they are a Kim Deal and Breeders freak, they'll say "I have no idea"

I don't hate her, it's just the facts, man.

I will stand with Brackish Girl. I picked up Pod and Last Splash. It's the only girl (mostly) band that I really enjoy. And not to rub it in Swim boy's face, I plan to get Title TK and The Amps Pacer.

Back to the Mose topic, I found a two disc set at the local library. I am not a big fan of jazz but I have discovered that his music is a lot like when I discovered Frank, first listen didn't seem too impressive but the more I listened the better it got. Then the next thing you know, your hooked.

That's cool. I'm glad you gave Mose a try. He's not for everyone, but definitely one of a kind.

Why would that rub it in my face? The early Breeders stuff was good, because she had other TALENTED people in the band with her, just like the Pixies.

Besides, I don't care if anyone wants to listen to her. I don't dislike her personally, I just think her music does not appeal to me.

Buy whatever you want.

Thanks Peter. Now if you would be so kind as to help me find my mind.
I had no idea that he was 74.
Why doesn't he ever come to Canada. Maybe ask him that the next time around. We would appreciate it.
Maybe he could hook up with Link Wray. Link had never been here - and now we can't make him leave.

I totally agree..... all her albums with the Breeders, and the one album with Amps are well patchy, with one or two good songs on each album.... the rest is shite. Kim should have behaved herself more when she was in the Pixies... thats the kind of career advice I would have given her.
