I think we'll all agree that Frank has one of the most distinctive signiture voices of all time, but since he does manage to sing nearly every song slightly differently, I thought i'd run through a list of all the certain points when his voice reminds me of someone else.
Holiday Song--a little bit of Gordan Gano there Is She Weird/All Over the World--some Berlin era Bowie/Iggy Pop Subbacultcha--Mark E Smith Fiddle Riddle/Southbound Bevy--Aaron Neville, ha Headache--Some Van Morrison with a dose of Dylan I've Seen Your Picture--Mick Jagger I'll Be Blue--Neil Young the verses to Fields of Marigold--Hunky Dory era Bowie
If someone unfamiliar with Frank were to look at this list it'd probably look ridiculous that someone could sound like all those guys, but alas. Of course there are ten times more vocal variations taht don't resemble anyone but Frank, but it would take years to go through them all. does anyone find his singing on the last two LPs more akin to his singing on Teenager of the Year than on the first two Catholics albums? Less throaty and gruff, more smooth and melodic?.
I think if Frank tried to talk in a high pitch and kind of southern-USA accent, he would sound like the police chief from the simpsons!
I love Frank's voice. It is very soothing and private. Like a good friend is singing to you. And he gives his voice just the right combination of sincerity and soberness. The latter to make it all sound a little 'relative', you know what I mean?
