The secret is out. The world now knows about Baboon. You will buy Something Good Is Going To Happen to You and then you will feel obligated to buy their catalog and wonder how you missed these guys in the first place. Because I suck at describing bands I'll let the "pro's" do it for me in a quote.

quote:
Baboon is an experimental, undisciplined, aggravating noisy rock band from Denton, Texas. Their songs range from chest-pounding anthems and finger-pointing rants to teary-eyed lullabies and white-noise monstrosities. They’re sick of the state that modern music is in, but frankly, have few other skills beyond making music, and they don’t like their day jobs anyway. So they forge ahead with the intent of doing something new, hopefully without falling into the trappings of typical indie/alternative rock.

Formed in 1991 from the remnants of various Texas groups, Baboon is a band that’s violently pulling in several different directions at once artistically, and their music is the sound of good ideas being ripped to shreds. Their live show reflects this too. As a spectator, you aren’t sure whether to dance, mosh, hug your girl or punch someone in the face. Pig masks, trombones, cigars, beer, goggles and blood are common to the live Baboon experience. Baboon plays feel-good music for those of us who probably shouldn’t be allowed to walk the streets.

Baboon released their first full-length in 1994, Face Down in Turpentine, and a six-song EP in 1996 entitled Numb, both on Grass Records. The Numb EP coincided with a brief appearance on the popular TV show Walker, Texas Ranger starring Chuck Norris. (Chuck’s assessment: "They’re terrible!") Baboon’s second full-length is the new tour-de-force Secret Robot Control on Wind-up Records, which encapsulates Baboon’s schizophrenic, ridiculous, emotional and ultimately reckless take on what music should sound like.

Secret Robot Control was recorded at Stank Booty Studios in Denton between June 1995 and early 1996 due to the band’s frantic touring schedule and increasingly volatile personality conflicts, which, by the way, have been completely and blissfully rectified.

However, the impotent rage that permeated the air during these sessions can be detected in the songs themselves. "I’m OK If You’re OK," for instance, is basically the musical equivalent of a temper tantrum, right down to the sounds of kitchen utensils and broken hardware being hurled against the studio floor. They weren’t always mad, though; they had a lot of fun too. Having said that, Andy actually sprained his knee while recording the vocals for "Bring Me The Head Of Jack Skinner". Elsewhere on the album, Steve played an electric blender, and there are also thumb pianos, chains, sleigh bells, whistles, clarinets, chimes, analog synthesizers and ghosts -- yes, ghosts! Upon close inspection of the intro to "Time Wounds All Heals," one can distinctly hear the bellowing, groaning sounds of some strange, unearthly despair. The origin of these creepy noises is still a mystery, however, it’s believed that they’re the ghosts of Andy’s long-dead relationships.

Baboon performs regularly in the Denton/Dallas/Fort Worth area and have gained an impressive, loyal following -- even more so now that Mark, the original bassist, has rejoined after recovering from a hand injury (don’t ask). They’ve toured throughout the country several times and played almost every major city you can think of. Their van has polluted the air in towns from Houston to Boston, and beyond, while touring with bands like the Toadies, Brutal Juice and rubberbullet. They’ve also played with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fugazi and fIREHOSE.

Baboon is trying very hard, the poor saps. Get hip to them, while their young bodies are still capable of taking the abuse.

A few articles to read over as you ponder buying something good is going to happen to you, and it will.

The crazy guys in opening band Baboon were definitely the highlight of the night, balancing out the angst of Slow Roosevelt and the straight-laced rock that Doosu plays.

Drummer Steven Barnett, donning the horse mask, garnered laughs from the audience but also showcased his precise percussion.

Credit must be given to the rest of Baboon as well for entertaining the crowd and mixing enough goofiness and fun into their quirky pop rock style to keep the crowd's attention.

With lead singer Andrew Huffstetler channeling Frank Black from the Pixies, Baboon pumped out a set of energy filled songs that went from sure and steady songs such as "Son" to snare drum driven wildness on "Rise."

Baboon closed the set with "Pig Latin," where the band whizzed through the fast paced song amid Huffstetler's writhing body and bassist Mark Hughes' bobbing head and rapid playing

Just in case you still had doubts about getting the best CD of 2002.

Texas Platters
Phases and Stages
BY CHRISTOPHER GRAY

January 24, 2003:

Baboon
Something Good Is Going to Happen to You (Last Beat)

Hard to believe this is the same band that once sounded like a drill press with an attitude problem. Here Baboon transcends their origins in the early-Nineties North Texas noise crowd (Johnboy, Brutal Juice) with a stunning album, at once tender and tenderizing. Something Good begins with a run of Weezer-reminiscent rockers that don't skimp on either melody or crunch and peaks with the harmony-laden, billowing chorus of "Carried" and pogo riff of "Evil." Meanwhile, "Son" opens things up into hazier BRMC territory, before "King of the Damned Laser Gag" splices queasy Farfisa into vein-bulging, Toadies-caliber venting. A time warp hits just in time for the skinny-tied "Leave Me Be," as singer Andrew Huffstetler channels Dexy's Midnight Runners in a successful bid for honorary membership in The Breakfast Club. "Secret Room" boosts a Cure-ish vocal and a jumpy six/eight rhythm into a full on Fugazi-style adrenaline rush. Only then does the band's punishing past come surging back, both on the frenetic "Vampirate" and Blues Explosion hysteria of "Pig Latin." Closer "Goodnight, Good-Bye," a stately benediction guided by piano and trumpet, offers yet another reminder that the band's melodic talents are now commensurate with their already formidable ability to rock your ass. Something good indeed happened to Baboon while making this album: They suddenly became one of the best bands south of the Red River.

Another shorter review

Baboon - Something Good Is Going To Happen To You, Last Beat Records
It’s too hard to explain how good this record is. Just put it in your spindle and let it consume you like all great albums do. Don’t be surprised one day if this disc sits between the Stones’ Exile On Main Street” and The Who’s Who’s Next. (Angus MacMannus)

out of curiosity - what are they like live? have you seen them?

There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough.

i'm listening to the mp3 and i am not really impressed. it's just nothing special really. the drumming is really, really boring. i hope it's just that song. the sound feels weak and empty too, i dunno if that's due to crappy compression or just too many white noise filters being applied.
