Great show tonight, but they should never have another concert at le Rendez-Vous. The sound is always shitty, and tonight was no exception. Seven song encore, and it was nice to hear Calistan, and especially Dirty Old Town near the end. |

It was nice to hear Holiday Song and Cactus too. My friend who went with me only heard Frank Black in my car before but after that show he is a fan now.

yes, i've seen the catholics twice before and the sound was better. but the performance of the band was top notch. i think they played for about 2 hours. feel pretty spoiled only paying $20. here's what i can remember of the set list- may not be in the exact order, the beers were going down nicely.

I wrote my concert report to the AbstractPlain yahoo!group (it was quite long, so I will spare you; join if you care to read it). The setlist, which I recorded as the show progressed and thus should be accurate, was:
Where is My Mind? Bullet California Bound Headache Robert Onion New House of the Pope Manitoba Mr. Grieves Los Angeles Farewell Bend Gouge Away Hermaphroditos Crackity Jones I Want Rock & Roll Six-sixty-six Monkey Gone to Heaven How You Went So Far Calistan All My Ghosts "Central France" Nadine
ENCORE: Dirty Old Town Holiday Song Nimrod's Son Sir Rockaby Dog in the Sand Cactus Velvety Black Rider
I met fumanbru and his wife, which was cool, and got Frank's autograph on my TOTY and BLD cd jackets, and Rich and Dave P's autographs on BLD. The show was AMAZING. I was probably too close to the speakers to really judge the sound quality -- for me it was just too loud (ears, please stop ringing), but the performance was spectacular! Less pushing from rowdy girls would have been appreciated too, but enough complaining, I am happy. I will sport my new FB&TCs hat tomorrow with pride, and brag to all my friends. :)

Does anyone know what song is playing on the PA when the Catholics take the stage? I'd swear the one in Winnipeg last night was the same one I heard in Vancouver two years ago. It's a female vocalist, and she's singing about horses or something (sorry - a few too many beers to remember much more than that). |

It was my third time seeing Frank and this was the best yet! I also had a chat after the show with Frank and he autographed my Surfer Rosa for me. What is it about this guy? He quietly sells millions of records worldwide, gets no recognition from the media(probably a good thing,we can keep him too ourselves) and can find time to chat with fans and shake hands with us. What a treat!! Frank makes me happy. |

It's a Bob Dylan song. This question has been answered close to one million times. |

I was right beside you when you were talking to him.
Anwyway, that was without a doubt, the best concert I have ever seen. I've always seen people talk about how they'd pay $100 to see Frank but I always thought that was a little overboard. After actually seeing him live, I know exactly what these people are talking about. |

Yeah great show, bad sound. to loud. I saw them last year in minneapolis. This show was better. Sound was worse, but frank seemed more comfortable. He took time out to look into the crowd a few times. I was really impressed the way him and the catholics stood on the edge of the stage to soak up the applause before they left.
So, swimmer, if the questions be answered a million times, What is the name? |

also, for future reference, the hills of central frane song is called "massif centrale" which means central region/area in french. dave phillips told me this and it is confirmed on the "official" metro boot you can download.

It's "Massif Central" and it's the name of mountains located in the middle of France. But it's far from being the most famous and highest french mountains!

not positive if he played His Kingly Cave or Western Star. i'd go by jeremyw's set list. jeremy was on top of things. he provided frank with a solid marker to sign our cd jackets. got the pic's back today. they turned out pretty good. frank is a true gentlemen to take the time to chat it up with the fans and take some photo's. he looked exhausted (very impressive that the band can play so hard night after night while travelling so much) but in the pics frank's got some good expressions. i'll see if i can get them scanned and post them. (i'm a computer dumbass so it may take a while- it took me about 10 hours to download the live songs from the ftp site.) |

Yeah, good luck on that! I submitted my "application" to join the Plain so long ago that I've forgotten when it was. You could prune up and grow old waiting to join--helloooo, Jim! You're pokier than those planetofthepixies people!
Anyway, I think you should post your review here, too. (Um, please.) |

No, he didn't play His Kingly Cave. He also didn't play Western Star (too bad). But that was the best show I've ever seen! I also got his autograph on my ticket stub, which made it even better! That was the first time I've seen him and I was shocked at Frank's screaming. Does he usually do that? THHAANNKK YYOOUU!!! GGOODD NNIIGGHHTT!!! That was hilarious |

hey Jeremy W., Were you the shorter guy with a leather jacket, standing next to a guy in a blue t-shirt? If so, I was 2 people behind you, and saw you (or someone) writing down the song names as they were played. Your setlist is completly accurate, just missing "The" before New House of the Pope, Farewell Bend, and Holiday Song. Sir Rockabye is missing an 'e'. No big deal. matt |

Sorry, I didn't realize you have to apply to join the Plain now. Here's my post, minus the setlist I already gave above:
It's finally my turn to write one of those long-winded concert reviews that for so long turned me green with envy. It's probably too long, but I'm too tired to edit it now. (Skip to the bottom if you just want the setlist.)
After much anticipation, FB-day came, and I went through my Wednesday routine with as little ado as possible until it came time to prepare for the show. My ears were primed by the university radio station's Pixies/Frank Black retrospective as I drove to the venue with my friend. We arrived before the doors opened and spent nearly half an hour shivering alongside a number of other fans and unfortunates without tickets. We managed to be part of the first group of five let in, and I was the first ticket holder past the inner doors. Then we waited some more, then I met "fumanbru" from FB.net, and then we waited a little longer.
Tangiers, who are probably termed "garage-rock-revivalists" by music reviewers, opened with a good set, which fortunately wasn't too long (no disrespect to them, but I came for Frank). Dave Lovering took the stage soon after and put on his entertaining show, taking a break near the end due to supposed technical difficulties during which he took Pixies questions from the audience. He was in a jokey mood, so I shouted, "who's your favourite member?" hoping it would set him up for a comic response. (It seemed funny to me at the time.) He replied, "Do I like my member?" He also sang his line from "La La Love You," which was cool. I was pretty impressed by his act, as well as his ability to perform when there were audience members (only a couple) who at one point started shouting for Frank Black -- eventually other people told them to shut up, but it was annoying for me, and no doubt for him.
Then, the moment we were waiting for. FB&TCs finally took the stage as All the Tired Horses played on the PA. First song: Where Is My Mind. Of course the crowd of 800 went wild. Unfortunately near the end of that or one of the other first songs I had to contend with a girl trying to push me out of my position against the barricade immediately in front of the stage, between Rich Gilbert and Frank. She tried to make it seem like she was being pushed (she was, by her friend), and at one point told me to be a gentleman and let her in. Now, I consider myself a very nice guy, and anyone who knows me will confirm this, but it's not my duty to give a girl who is pushing *me* out of my spot, which I staked out from the beginning of the concert, so she and her friend can stand at the front. Anyways, I stood fast, with the encouragement of the people around me, and eventually the rowdy girls went away, and were replaced by a less violent girl who maneuvered herself such that I was left with an elbow on the barricade. Oh well.
The band played the songs below with amazing energy, making the transitions from song to song with no fuss. Rich played with all the wild contortions and gyrations he is apparently known for, played with a drumstick for a little while, and at one point with his teeth. Until the end of the set I don't think Frank said more than Thank-you" to the audience. Of course all the Pixies songs were enthusiastically received, but so were the rest. The girl beside me went up in my esteem when by being able to sing along with a lot of the material, new and old. #65533;I almost got a drumstick, twice -- the first one Scott threw landed right in front of me between the stage and the barricade, but the security guard who picked it up gave it to the girl beside me; the next one was caught by the guy on my other side. I took more than a roll of pictures, so hopefully most of them turn out.
The whole band stood forward in the light at the end of their last pre-encore song, and then walked off to huge applause. About two minutes of screaming and chanting brought them back. Some time around here Frank introduced the band, and said next time they wouldn't wait so long to visit here (it was their first WInnipeg show ever). They finished with Black Rider, with Frank climaxing in a chorus of thank-yous as the song ended.
AWESOME. The show was awesome. It was too loud for my liking, but I thought the sound quality was decent. I heard other people with less positive opinions; well, it was good for me. I've written enough [glancing upwards], so I'll just say it again: AWESOME!
After the show I got a FB&TCs hat, then got Rich Gilbert to autograph my BLD cd booklet, then Dave Phillips, then FRANK BLACK himself. (Later I got him to autograph TOTY). At first he just signed things for people in silence (with my marker, since nobody else apparently thought to bring a pen), but eventually he became chatty. At first he told some people they could meet outside at the bus for photos later (a big, long, blue tour bus), but then he posed for some on the stage, including one with yours truly. I very much hope that my Frank-with-arm-on-shoulder-of-fan-atic photo turns out!
I pray the ringing in my ears subsides to its pre-concert levels soon. (I really need some good earplugs; I bought some from the drug store, but the sound was way too muffled and I couldn't stand it.)

Is this matt from the AP? I was wearing a black t-shirt with a small white logo on the front with the caption "Get Some" and a small white CBC logo on the back. I was standing right in front of the stage, between Rich and Frank.
