This one is for Canadian Frank Black fans or those of you wih friends in Canada:
Make sure to tune into April 18th's edition of The Wedge on MuchMusic. The entire show is hosted by Frank Black and the Catholics. The band will play some of their favourite videos on the show along with some classic Pixies and Frank Black videos.
The program was filmed in October when the band did their five night stand in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern. The videos they picked are pretty interesting, I can't remember the whole list anymore, but there are definitely some surprises included in the show.
The Wedge airs Friday night at 11:00 PM EST on Much Music and repeats at midnight on Much Loud and at 3:00 AM EST on Much Music |

a Canadian friend of mine is going to try to record it for me.
i could try to rip it with my cheap capture card. the quality may not be too great but it will sure hell beat the realmedia clips in the FTP.
does anyone know how long the special is? |

I will be taping the show if anyone's after a copy. It will only be on VHS format, though. I don't have the DVD recording technology.

I visited the website for MuchMusic, and they listed a completely different host for the Wedge. The big question - should I trust the website? Anyway, RussT, yes i would be very inetrested in a VHS of the show (that is if they show it) Anything you need in return? I have one or two early bootlegs.

We saw it, I thought that someone said they were recording it though, so we didn't... not that we have a way to convert to digital anyway, but didn't even think of it. |

Well, I'm going to copy this and do a bit of editing from another thread since it probably should have been posted here anyway:
The show was hosted by, of course, Mr. Frank Black, Scott (who introduced himself as Harris - maybe we should start using his stage name to refer to him?) Boutier, and Rich Gilbert. They introduced themselves, and right off the bat started with two Pixies videos.
They talked a little bit about the Pixies' Velouria video, which I believe is on the FTP? For the uninformed, it's them running towards the camera for the entire 3:30, in ultra slow-mo. Frank referred to it as "the best video we ever made" and said that originally that was just going to be used in clips in a larger video but that they had decided to do it this way. He also commented that it cost about 800 pounds to make. They showed the Monkey Gone To Heaven, which for some reason was titled "This Monkeys Gone To Heaven" and which was apparently co-directed by Black Francis.
They played Beck, Walkmen and some other stuff which I'm hoping Speedy M will remember during the show. I was expecting a bit more of the stuff that Frank covers or talks about - something from Bowie, Tom Waits, or Mose Alison, but apparently the entire band picked songs. At one point, Frank was introducing the next song and said, "This is one of the picks from, <turns to Rich & Sco... errr... Harris> who was it that picked this one?" and Rich said it was "young Philips", and Frank said, "Young Dave Philips, who couldn't be here tonight picked this one, I think, because of its minimalistic qualities or something like that." And they started the video, which was just a camera slowly panning back from a sub which was pounding along to the song in B&W and at the end a guy who's cigarette we also saw burn booted the crap out of it for some reason and walked out the door. Anyone remember the song/artist? Speedy M thinks they sound like a generic/boring version of the Pixies, and I agree with him on the boring definitely.
The also played Whip It, by Devo, which Rich introduced. They basically introduced it by saying that music videos were what all musicians wanted to make and were really the highest art form of music. They introduced Devo as pioneers of the video and the masters of the craft, and then played the video. There was a definite 'making fun of music videos' motif throughout the show, and all of them were really sparse and deliberately spartan, or just had little/nothing to do with anything related to the song.
To cap the evening off, they played two FB videos, Men in Black and Hang on to Your Ego. Frank said that as they were driving out in the desert of Nevada to film the video at that house, a black unmarked helicopter flew over the ridge really low and checked them out and that it was just a good reminder that they're out there.
Overall, too much video, not enough FB&C's, and I would have liked to hear a bit more from Harris, but as always it's enjoyable to see them whenever/however I can... especially if they're making fun of mainstream stuff by using an invite on a mainstream show. I think they play a rerun today at some point, maybe on Much More or something, so someone should be on the lookout (I don't get either channel). Anyway, that's my long winded and slightly more cogent review, hope it helps pacify those who missed it a little. |

My God, there is nothing "boring" about The Replacements, whose "Bastards of Young" video you're referring to (they're the best band ever to come out of Minneapolis, and yes, I'm including Husker Du). It's a classic video. Interesting video by The Fall as well (Telephone Thing). They also showed the Men in Black video, which I hadn't seen. |

Wasn't Tim released like in '85? So that would make the video a couple years younger than Come On Pilgrim. I agree with RussT when you say there's nothing boring about the Replacements - they were loud, raucous, and fuckin' great rock and roll. I remember hearing a while ago that Frank was supposed to be working with Tommy Stinson on something; anyone remember this?

Granted, I only heard the one song, it just seemed to me to lack anything interesting... I suppose I should probably hear it again, but for now I stand by my boring comment. |

Frank has claimed The Replacements are one of his favorite bands, and also very influential to him.
They played The Fall?? That makes my night. |

Here is a complete list of what was played by the boys on friday nights Wedge. This is directly from muchmusic.com:
Pixies Velouria Pixies This Monkey's Gone To Heaven Beck Lost Cause Brendan Benson Tiny Spark The Fall Telephone Thing Granada Time To Pass The Replacements Bastards Of Young French Kicks When You Heard You The Walkmen We've Been Had Devo Whip It Frank Black Men In Black Frank Black Hang On To Your Ego
The show was enjoyable, but the lack of Frank and Co. speaking was a semi-dissapointment. There was perhaps two mintues total air time of Frank, Rick and Scott saying anything. They were in a guitar store in Toronto, I forget which one, and Frank mentioned that they liked that store and had purchased gear there before, and that it was a good place to shop "after you've been ripped off". That was in reference to, I presume, their stolen gear from last year. A decent show all in all (is true), the Walkmen are really good, the Beck song was good, the French Kicks have better material and Devo rule, as Rich pointed out.

Capsule Music is the store.
The Replacements and The Fall are both excellent. The interview segment was edited and some new videos were shown. Why? I do not know. |

I'm pretty sure that the band didn't even pick a few of the songs that were played on the show (Brendan Benson, Walkmen, Beck, and the others that had the "New" graphic on the screen). They weren't released at the time of the interview. Also, the comment about the Replacements being a generic version of the Pixies was hilarious! Keep it up dude

The Replacements indeed rule. Another MPLS/St. Paul connection; the good song writer from Husker, Bob Mould, wrote a song about the Pixies while playing in Sugar, and I have read a couple of interviews in which he complimented the Pixies. (Although Mould was neither born nor currently lives in MN). |
