Alright.....2nd post ever for me, a little background first, I'm 30, and a giant Pixies fan who has converted nicely into a strong Frank Black fan. This is my 4th time seeing Frank live, he comes every year to the Twin Cities, bless his heart.
They opened with Gouge Away. That alone made my night. Perma-grin for 2 hours, starting there. Next up was Hermaphroditos, which also rocked. I'm hoping someone else will fill in the complete set list details, as I was pleasantly drunk and enjoying the show. Heres what I remember, and in no order........ Nimrods Son Monkey Gone.... Crackity Jones Mr. Grieves all my ghosts new house of the pope
wave of mutilation headache los angeles "beautiful day/horrible day" - good! where is my mind robert onion sir rockabye Black rider bullet 666 - very slow version
3 song encore, they closed with Nadine, IIRC, and it was veeeery cool, will be nice to have that on CD eventually. Also, they played Jane Queen etc. during the main show, this was the one song that showed up on everyones set lists, so I had tried to prepare for it, but just wasnt a very big fan of the CD version. The live version kicked large ass, I was immmmmmmpresssssed. All in all, an extremely fun show, probably my favorite Frank show yet, even though he didn't play Skeleton Man :( |

The 3rd FB show I've seen...truly touching for me being a fan since the early 90's. I was lucky enough to be front and center also. I enjoyed David Loverling's performance as well and was lucky enough to meet him after the show. Just all-around good fun.

I'll be at the Winnipeg show too That place is going to be packed. I predict a rather large lineup long before the doors open |

for all the talk about how these shows have sold out, I was surprised that the Quest didn't open up the second floor (balcony) last night at the Minneapolis show.
It was a truly awesome show, though. There was only a tiny little bit of chatter from Frank, but he did give us a couple smiles that for some goofy reason made my night.
In other news, I have no idea what Dave Lovering is trying to do. For those uninitiated, it's a strange Mr. Science-meets-Penn and Teller stage show that involves a few fake "technical problems" so that Dave can answer Pixies questions. Strange. |

I think it's called "having fun" though I am not sure.
But really, he was in THE PIXIES - what does he have to prove?
Can't a guy just have a little show for fun and go out on tour and have a good time after being in one of the most influential bands in R&R ???

Just a few additions to your setlist, SkeletonMan (again, in no particular order, I also had a few libations):
The Holiday Song Whiskey In Your Shoes California Bound Cold Heart Of Stone Black Letter Day How You Went So Far Southbound Bevy
And he did indeed play I Want Rock & Roll. I was also impressed by the live versions of songs I've been rather indifferent to on the albums, such as How You Went So Far and Jane The Queen Of Love. I really wish he would've played more from Devil's Workshop, and my all-time favorite FB track, Speedy Marie, but oh well. It was certainly offset by the amount of Pixies classics and his excellent voice throughout the show. Had I known he'd be in Winnepeg the next night, I'd have gone to that, too. Damn my too-lazy-to-check-the-internet ass. |

Eh... not that I didn't enjoy it, but his cruise-ship-casino-show schtick ran a little long.
And whether or not he used to be in a band has nothing to do with it. Put another way: If Ringo Starr went on the road with a juggling / unicycle act, would you pay to see it? |

I was also at the MPLS show, which was awesome as usual. My only complaint was his performance of Where is My Mind, the way he kept muttering "where is my mind" where on the recorded version there are just the instruments. His voice sounded funny, like he was trying to be weird, like someone who had lost his mind. It was very annoying to me. The only time I was fortunate enough to see the Pixies, they opened with Where is My Mind, and it changed my life, seriously. So I am trying to forget his recent rendition. My brother was also at the show and he said he appreciated that they played it. What were your thoughts on it?

I can't believe I missed this!! I knew I should have checked tour dates earlier!! How is the Quest as a venue? Last time I saw him here it was a Ground Zero, and it was a great show.
And there ain't no day... And there ain't no night... |

I think the quest is a decent venue, as long as you don't get stuck behind a pillar and the mix is decent. This time it seemed Rich was buried in the mix, that was kind of depressing. "Jane, the Queen of Love" was the high point for me at this show. I'd prefer that he played 1st avenue when he comes here. I've seen him twice at both places and the sound at 1st Ave. is much better. This was a very good show though, probably ranks 3rd behind the first tour (with Joey) and the DITS show at 1st Ave. The Ground Zero show was great as well because there weren't a ton of people there. I can't complain about venues or anything though since he does seem to make it here pretty often. Thanks Frank! I would never complain about song selection either but as far as the pixies material goes I would love to hear other older pixies songs (River Euphrates and Caribou leap to mind) or ANYTHING off Trompe le Monde (Bird Dream would be ideal, lol). Anyways, great show as always and Mr. Lovering's act was pretty entertaining. Oh, and great forums you've got here. I've been lurking for quite a while.
