thnx for the redirect...im not a big pixies fan...so...i didnt think to look here. good to read what others listen to so you can get a basis for what/why some people think something rules and something else is crap.
Germs, Blatz, Swervedriver, Stone Roses, Charlatans UK, Menace, Eric's Trip (+Elevator Hell/Through projects), Swirlies, P.E.E., Archers of Loaf, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr, Pond, Carpettes, Lush (all the early EPs + Spooky..never cared for the pop-stuff), Codeine, Slowdive, Thingy, Naked Raygun, Beck's non-funk stuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin...
im sure im leaving some out...if i had to pin a must-listen on any of these i'd have to go with Swervedriver "Mezcal Head", Stone Roses "S/T", and Pond "Practice of Joy Before Death"

Doing my part to devalue everyone else's two cents...There's no way most of us could pick only five other bands/artists, including myself. So I went out to the car to see what's in my 6 disc changer.
1. John Scofield & Pat Metheny-I Can See Your House From Here (Jazz guitar) 2. AYWKUBT Trail Of Dead-Source Tags & Codes (Last Year's Favorite Album) 3. Buzzcocks-Live Tension (Live in '79, Too Classic) 4. Billy Ocean-Suddenly (Don't even start with me about this one). 5. The Absolute Best of The Zombies (What's your name?/Who's your daddy?) 6. Judas Priest-Unleashed in the East/Live in Japan (The Beatles of Heavy Metal-Halford rules!)
These change every week...See you again!

modest mouse (3rd planet) brendan benson (jet lag) wannadies (hit) electric six (naked pictures of your mother) hefner (christian girls) pavement (carrot rope) eels (anything on daisies) beck (sea change) dandy warhols (last junkie) violent femmes (add it up)

Do you remember Rock'n'Roll Radio?
Elvis - I'm surprised nobody mentioned him- after all, is he not the King? The Beach Boys & Brian 'smiley' Wilson The Byrds and their many offspring and relatives (The Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young, Gram Parson...) Bob Dylan Grateful Dead (early stuff) Captain Beefheart The Soft Machine + Robert Wyatt Phil Spector-produced stuff (eg, his Christmas album) The Velvet Underground & early Lou Reed
It's the end the end of the 70's, it's the end the end of the century:
Iggy & the Stooges + on his own! The Ramones Suicide Buzzcocks The Birthday Party + Nick Cave (especially The Good Son) Bruce Springsteen Sonic Youth Tom Waits The God Machine Talking Heads
From Brazil:
Jorge Ben - the underestimated king of happiness and samba-funk/swing. Also sings about space, though more about football-check out "Africa Brasil" if you can! Joao Gilberto Gilberto Gil Caetano Veloso Lenine Os Tribalistas (Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown) all Samba, Batucada...
and from Nigeria:
Fela Kuti!

Hard to pick 5 only (yeah, the list is really longer ...) :
Beatles Led Zep Hendrix The Cure Rage Against The Machine Nirvana/Foo Fighters Radiohead
in the recent era : At The Drive-in/Sparta/*****(damn, can't remember the name of the new band of the 2nd half of ex-ATDI ...), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, White Stripes, Electric 6 (fun show at the Eurockéennes of Belfort 2003 - France !).
... and a french wing for those who might know : Téléphone/Noir Désir/Drive Blind (only got 1 record called "Be a vegetable",excellent - did some french out there got more stuff about that band, cos it's pretty impossible to find smthg today ?)
Arnaud They tried to give me advice / Down at the record shop / I said sit down boys / This may come as a shock / What's all I listen to / It's all freedom rock ... Calme et tranquille |

The other half of At The Drive In formed The Mars Volta, bringing ten minute drum solos back to the masses. At The Drive In were brilliant it's a shame they split after only one album. The seperate offerings of Sparta and The Mars Volta are no way near as good IMO. |

Source Tags And Codes is an excellent album and they have my favourite band name ever so please don't shorten it. People always refer to them as Trail Of Dead but the full title of And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead is much better.

Unusual to see an American who has even heard of The Charlatans from Manchester UK, let alone actually likes them. They were and still are very big over here but they never made an impact in the States. Personally I think they are bit of a singles band but some of their singles have been excellent to be fair.
I am also surprised you have heard of The Stone Roses (also from Manchester) but they definately deserved greater woldwide recognition. They should have been huge everywhere 'cos their songs were so strong. I never listen to them at home now 'cos all the indie clubs in England (especially Manchester) play them to death but I still appreciate what a great band they were. |

If I recall correctly, around 89 or so there was an influx of Mancunian acts into American College Radio--the Stone Roses and Charlatans UK were the big ones. I never really got into them myself, but I was in college at the time. My roomate turned me on to the Pixies--he also had a Stone Roses tape. |

Stone Roses and Charlatans UK...mmmmm madchester/baggy...i love the stuff, its making a comeback i hear. buy the classic vinyl while you still can cheaply.
btw..charlatans uk are very technically tallented, even still today. yeah, their singles do tend to stand apart from their albums on whole...kinda like those who bought frank's first solo album and expecting to hear a whole album of guitar crunching featured on "los angeles" |

I'm totally baffled by the adoration lavished upon the Stone Roses. Never managed to enjoy their records and I could never understand why songs like Fools Gold get into the best of all time lists. I think it might be a NME/Melody Maker thing. The music papers decided that they were the best thing since sliced bread and backed them at every opportunity. Same thing going on these days with The Strokes and others like them. You'd think the Strokes were the saviours of music if you read the music press.
I notice that the NME has a Beyonce song as their no. 1 for the year. Enough said!!

I am surprised being a Pixies fan that you don't have a greater appreciation of great pop music, as that is essentially what the Pixies' music is. The Stone Roses wrote some great pop songs (Fools Gold is not one of them but it is a great song 'cos it is so original) even if I don't particularily like their style now. I much prefer the Pixies way of taking a great pop melody and trying to fuck it up a little to make it different and a lot more interesting. That said there is no denying a great pop song just because you don't respect the artist preforming it. Whoever wrote that Beyonce song (I assume you are talking about 'Crazy In Love'), I take my hat off to them - it's just a great pop song. Not the song of the year IMO though, but hey each to their own.

personally, I think that "crazy in love" song is a perfect example of a shitty trend in soul/r&b music right now.....have the chorus be repetitive as hell and be 85% of the song anyway.....how many damn times can she sing how something's "got me lookin' so crazy right now".....one of ashanti's songs does the same thing...only she keeps singing "oh baby" over and over and over and over and over and over and over.....

stone roses started off kinda gothy...kinda like how the soup dragons were kinda pop/punk/art before they "found their sound" later...going back to the c86 era of guitar rock in the mid-late 80s in britian and combining it with the acid house movement to follow, a nice era of new-pop with an emphesis on "live-played loops" rhythm sections over regular guitar pop was spawned.
you could dance to it or just chill...hell of a better scene than the 10000000 cher/madonna remixes commonly played these days in clubs. if some stone roses songs sound a bit "repetitive" such as 'fools gold' its almost purposeful in nature. they didnt set out to make the definate record defining the movement, but considering the state of music in 1988/1989, it was indeed a very welcome breath of fresh air. it may sound canned and warmed-over many times by this point now we're in the era of widespread sampler usage, but before the drugs became more important than the music to them they played a lotta these songs very well live...and their drummer could wail.
the 80s were dark days for music in my opinion...while the US had its boston/mass-area influx of fresh sounds like the lemonheads, dinosaur jr, and pixies, the UK went its own direction in the likes of bands like the bmx bandits, primal scream, etc...
the US sounds led to the whole "grunge" thing out west as they commonly give props to that 80s mass-area sound...and its doubtful you'd have blur, oasis, etc. without the UK influences before them that borrow heavy from the madchester/baggy movement and the earlier rock guitar revolts.
