I don't know much JAMC but I like their 'head on' version better than the pixies' ! I especially like the chorus part. |

I recently borrowed a Enon CD from a friend. It's called 'Onhold' and consists of short, instrumental tracks in the lo-fi/minimalist electronica vein. My friend said he got the CD at a show by the Toadies, for which Enon opened up. I was quite impressed and am definitely going to buy something by those guys at some point. |

They have a cool song I got called Rubber Car, it's pretty good and it really sounds like Beck or Bobby Conn.

Hey it's cool that someone likes the JAMC "Head On" more than the Pixies version - even William Reid (JAMC bloke who wrote the song) said he liked the Pixies version better! They're really different versions though; the Pixies one is about twice as fast as the JAMC original.
Just thought of some other bands that Pixies fans are pretty much guaranteed to like:
Sugar - Beaster (other albums a bit too poppy; Beaster is a raging, cathartic torment) Belle and Sebastian - everything they've ever done, quite twee and poppy on the surface, but really twisted songs, and amazing tunes Urge Overkill - I really loved Exit the Dragon, classic Americana, balls out rock'n'roll. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 'Ease Down the Road' - this album is actually really different from the Pixies, but it's soooo good. Clinic - patchy but good, a lot like the Velvet Underground Grant Lee Buffalo - 'Fuzzy' more Americana, if you like the Catholics you'll like this Lambchop - 'Nixon' - feck all like the Pixies but good all the same Manu Chao - this is getting ridiculous now, only similarity is that some tunes are sung in spanish, but Manu Chao has the best tunes Manic Street Preachers - 'Holy Bible' - their one good album, but it's a cracker My Bloody Valentine - I used to love these noiseniks but their stuff hasn't aged too well. More noise than music, if you catch me. Oasis - 'Definitely Maybe' - this is a cracking record, just because it's popular doesn't mean it's shit Pavement/Silver Jews - bit wonky but good country tinged angular art-rock Nickelback - haw haw haw I really am joking here, they're shite Spiritualised - get "Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space" - nobody ever regrets buying this album. Sparklehorse - country punk, more country less punk now, which I like Stone Roses - the other best band of all time Supergrass - very overlooked, just get better and better, poppy glam punk rock with dark undertones The Undertones - 'Teenage Kicks' Flaming Lips - arty pop, lot of wibble but some astounding tunes such as "feeling Yourself Disintegrate" The Clash - punk with a social conscience and excellent tunes Scud Mountain Boys - sorry I like country music, they're feck all like the pixies tho The La's - pure genius, get the album The White Stripes Turin Brakes - subdued acoustic stuff but good Tricky - "Maxinquaye" - just a class album, shot through with sickness and paranoia like the Pixies
Cheers!

In no particular order...(and with a selection of choice lyrics....!)
J&MC ("there's something dead inside my hole") Skunk Anansie ("you kill me with your smelly fingers") Spacemen 3 ("I'm so tired of alot of people in alot of high places that don't want me and you to enjoy ourselves") Ash ("haven't been the same since my teenage lobotomy") The Pogues ("he came up on the left like a streak of light, like a drunken fuck on a Saturday night" .... "I'm happy as a horse in shite" ... and too many to fit here)
oh, I could go on all night!

My Bloody Valentine; The Jesus and Mary Chain*; Shellac/Big Black; Throwing Muses; Old stuff -- Beach Boys; Etta James; Howlin' Wolf; random 50s/60s songs, etc.
* But dear God, Automatic isn't really one I'd recommend! EVERYBODY should have Psychocandy, and probably Darklands. And the Sound of Speed and I Hate Rock and Roll EPs.

Spoon are fantastic. I like pretty much everything they've done, including their hard to find ep's, which hide some great songs. Their last three records rank up there with my all time faves.
Sleater-Kinney are really great. I've only got One Beat, but what a terrific record it is. "I'm a bubble in a sound wave, a sonic push for energy". Great opener....
Broken Social Scene. Everyone should own this record (You Forgot It In People). Really, really, really, good.
The Flaming Lips. Yoshimi is a really complex, really great record.
Nuetral Milk Hotel. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a beautiful, sad record.
The Notwist. The more I think about it, the more I like Neon Golden.
The Dears. Seriously, how I could I ever think No Cities Left wasnt't that good? Terrific record.
Chavez. Angular. Love it.
My Bloody Valentine. Loveless: must have.
Belle and Sebastian. Fold Your Hands is a really great record. Excellent for relaxing.
The New Pornographers. Sure, it's probably too early to tell if they're gonna stick with me, but Electric Version is awesome. Live at Amigo's on the 2nd! Oh, Neko.....
Guided By Voices and related. Gigantic, ridiculous, unmanageble body of work. And I love all of it. Sure, he has 3 releases a year. But it's good. Give it three spins and you'll love it.
Interpol. Enough has been said about this record. But it is great.
Not many people on this forum mention IDM (intelligent dance music), but on occasion I do enjoy: Adult. Mouse on Mars Hrvatski Avalanches and more I can't think of at work. I need my mp3 folder. |

Roykscopp, Add N to X, Boards of Canada, Mum, DJ Shadow, Plaid, Sqaure Pusher, Aphex Twin, early Nightmares on Wax, Avalanches and Mouse on Mars are all great but hav'nt heard of the other two. Nothing remotly like the Pixies, which is great, cause know one ever will be, why would you just want to keep listening to the same type of music forever (only classics stand the test of time and alot of Pixies imitators arent). Get over them, like Frank and open up a whole new world of music.

I like Rilo Kiley a lot. They sometimes cause writers/fans to bring up the names Pixies or Breeders. And I just read an interview where lead singer Jenny Lewis mentions being awestruck meeting Dave Lovering and Kim Deal, respectively. if you want, check out this fansite.. takeoff.to/rilokiley (mp3s) (aforementioned interview) |
