anyone else highly impressed with "i want rock n roll" on the current tour? frank seems extraordinarily into this song live. i was blown away, and now listening to the album rendition, i cannot believe he and the catholics recorded it the way they did! they're playing it with a lot more power on this tour. |

I nominate "I Want Rock n Roll" as best song/performance ever about r'n'r. Any other candidates? |

Absolutely blown away by the Rock tunes.
I would have to say, for the MIL. show at least, that ROCK'N'ROLL and 666 were on the same plain. That is just to say, they both equally kicked my ass.
But even the way the Pixies songs were done. They rocked liked I'd never heard them rock before (in fairness, I never saw the Pixies live). As my running joke goes, it seems those songs have finally been baptized (yeah, I know...).

I am glad someone mentioned this. This is an awesome song that, although I still love the recorded version, seems to kick gigantically large ass when they perform it live.
It is definitely a signature song for this band and their outlook on R&R.
I was very glad I saw it live.

After hearing 'I Gotta Move" done solo, I've re-discovered it's brillance. Bullet was also superb. Does anyone remember Lyle Workman? Lol..... Rich is an outstanding player, and it's always fun to watch him work. |

Yes, I too was absolutely blown away by I Want Rock and Roll! It has always been a good song, but now I have really started to listen to it again and again. I saw Frank in Chicago at the Double Door and stood right at Frank's feet (as I do every show in Chicago) anyway, I was rockin out so hard during IWRAR, I nearly passed out. Luckily I had the stage to hang on to. Of all songs to be most impressed by, I never would have guessed.
I like that lemur, I lick it. That's velvety! |

In Regina, Frank was so into I Want Rock 'n' Roll that he fell when rocking backwards on top of the monitor - the song rocks so hard live that it scares me. Other good candidates for songs that are way better live are Jane the Queen of Love and Hermaphroditos. There's also no way that the album version of Nadine will be able to compete with the live version, but here's hoping anyway. IWRAR has definitely moved up 17 or so notches in my personal FB rankings. |

Yeah, IWRAR and Jane are two songs that are much better live. Another choice for me would be "I Switched You". |

I agree Switchload. I Switched You is probably my favorite song on what I think is turning out to be my fav FB album, Pistolero.
I am starting to think, out of all the albums, this is thee one. |

interesting that pistolero is your favorite - most people i know think thats the worst of the catholics era albums. i think it has some great standout tracks, but as a whole is probably the weakest catholics release. that or devil's workshop

I agree about Jane - and I also REALLY loved Farewell Bend live, although I can't say it techinally "rocked" - but it was very cool. |

And I used to think the same myself. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I think this is the hardest rocking album. Maybe I am leaning a bit more towards the rock lately and that album brings it definitely.
Am I wrong or crazy? |

You know what always gets me - I look at the brown album and I almost never listen to it because none of the songs really stick out as great ones, so I usually throw in DITS or TOTY or BLD or pretty much anything else. And then I eventually think that I should just listen to it again and it's awesome. It's happens EVERY time I think about putting it in. Strange. |

it is definetely the most "rocking." we're all entitled to our opinion, and i've too been on a pistolero kick lately - i just think its still the weakest. that being said, its still tons better than cult of ray.

Cult of Ray isn't that bad... come on, Men In Black, Cult of Ray, Last Stand of Shazeb, Adventure/Resolution, Jesus Was Right? It's not my favourite, but it certainly isn't as awful as some seem to think.

its not awful, its just frank's worst, if you ask me - i love a few tracks off the album, if it was cut down to a 6 song EP it'd be great- excellent analogy swimmer...

Cult of Ray:
I love it when you pan one guitar far left and the other one far right. But Lyle Workman just plays anoying on some tracks. That's not because he's a bad player (hell no), but I think it's due production. On FB and The C's and Pistolero there's still the left/right thing but it still sounds solid. When Lyle hits the solo on COR there just seems something wrong. Don't know, must be the sound.
I almost never listen to it, but it's not a bad album. I just don't like the production. Nick Vincent as a producer is great...Pistolero,DITS,BLD perfect...

I love the Cult of Ray. I think it's an amazing album. The two weakest tracks are Punk Rock City and I Don't Want to Hurt You but I still like em.
Kicked in the Taco through Cult is a great sequence of songs, paticularly the shift from Dance War to Cult. Wow. It's too bad they don't play the title track live.
Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb is such a sad track with some beautiful guitar playing, the whole ending is a perfect match with the lyrics; giving off a sense of ascension. A sad song.
The Marsist is just a great opening track, leading right into Men In Black. Jesus, Men in Black, Adventure, Mosh, etc...I love em all.
I was surprised when I first read others opinions of this album; it often seems to be dismissed as a lesser work; to me, it's just like its brothers...one of the greats.
cheers |

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I love panning left and right (on most albums in general) and focusing on Lyle's playing. Sweet noise. |

I think Cult of Ray is a great album. Lyle is a really skilled guitar player who can just really rip shit up...I could see how some people might find his solo-style a tad cheesy though (let's face it, the guy scores for movies and stuff...session guitarists like Lyle gotta have a touch of the cheese to be "marketable" or something.) But altogether, Cult has some damn awesome songs on it! My favorites are Men in Black, Jesus Was Right, Mosh, and Kicked ----> Cult of Ray (Arm Arm Arm is so right on that one).
Oh, and for the record: Pistolero is definitely my favorite Frank Black album. I shudder to think that some fans actually find it to be the WEAKEST! are we listening to the same album here???? |

I'm not sure that I could pick a weakest album period... I always thought it was the brown album, because I look at the track lists and none of the songs seem to jump out at me, but then you put it in and it rocks too. But, there's no way it's FB, TOTY is probably up there as best album, I love Cult too, maybe not as much as the first two solos, but it's still great, the brown is fun too, not Pistolero, DEFINITELY not DITS, not BLD or DW, so I guess that since I haven't heard it, the new album must be the weakest. If I had to choose out of existing ones, I suppose I would hesitantly say brown, but with some serious reservations. |

i've recently been on the brown (FB&the C's) kick and i think thats turning out to be my second fav Catholics-era album right behind DITS. But my tastes in these things change a lot because all the albums are so good. on further listening i might revise my statement that pistolero was the weakest Catholics album and say that DW is. It's high points are VERY high, but b/c its so short, the tracks that aren't so great stick out like a sore thumb, like are you headed my way and the scene. out of 11 songs, i'd say 7 are really great, and the other four leave a lot to be desired.
that being said, its still one of the best albums of 2002. not many albums have that high a success rate, so don't think i'm bashing FB or anything. its just that on this forum we have the great oppurtunity to discuss this stuff at length with people who are equaly knowlegable about it, its great to get into some deep critical discussions of FB's work.

<in Austin Powers voice> Ah-thank-you. I thought that orange/brown were generally accepted, but I'm happy to bring enlightenment to the masses. :) I do like Weezer, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan - I really don't own any of their stuff, though I have enjoyed listening to it when others play it. I was unaware of their colour schemes until now, but having heard of it just now, I can only assume they ripped me off. :) |
