first off, i'm very lucky to have seen this show, for i am but 19 years old. i had an ID that is not mine, and it looks nothing like me, but it worked!
the acoustic in store at atomic records was quite awesome. Frank spoke a lot about each song. he played for about 45 minutes to an hour. the songs he played, in random order: mr. grieves cactus crackity jones brackish boy new house of the pope monkey gone to heaven 1/5th of bartholemew western star all my ghosts headache the swimmer wave of mutilation whiskey in my shoes dog in the sand *new song*(something about a witch and nakedness) the snake
i think that's it. it was all stream of consciousness. he'd sing one song, something in that song would remind him of another song, so he'd do that song. when he sang "rode the el nino" in WOM, he stopped and gloated that he had been singing about el nino WAY before it got all popular. he talked about how cactus was based on his obsession with a scarf that he had found in college that smelled like his ex-girlfriend back home in california, and how he had walked around just smelling it until the smell went away. he said that if anyone guessed what dog in the sand was about then he'd buy them a record. someone yelled out "mentally ill people" and he said no. "close, but no. well, not close..." bartholemew is about some guy in japantown in LA. he played the swimmer because wave of mutilation got him thinking of the other "ocean songs" he had written. at the end of western star, when he makes that sound over and over, he said it sounds like a manipulative dog. then he said it reminded him of another "dog" song- "i probably have a bunch of them, actually". he then played crackity jones, the "dog part" obviously being the barking noises. he really barked! like "ruff ruff" bark. it was funny. he talked about brakish boy before he played it. he said it's about a friend of his who was from mexico, but was norwegian, and whose brother was actually mexican. when he rhymed 'fuck' with 'luck' he paused and said "brilliant rhyme, wasn't it?" that's pretty much the highlights...
THE ACTUAL SHOW AT SHANK HALL lovering was funny. what a showman! frank and the boys came out and he said something into the mic. he then quickly said "enough jibber jabber, here we go", and they didn't stop playing for an hour and a half. no breaks, just one song into the next. simply amazing, really. here's the songlist in some skewed order (the first three and the encore(kind of) are correct):
where is my mind bullet velvety holiday song cactus mr grieves monkey gone to heaven gouge away los angeles all my ghosts i want rock and roll there goes nadine robert onion 666 crackity jones hermaphroditos new house of the pope california bound how you went so far jane the queen of love whiskey in my shoes dirty old town "beautiful day/horrible day" *new song* ("french" one...)
ENCORE chip away boy cold heart of stone end of miles southbound bevy!!!!!!! manitoba
i think that's it. they got the crowd going with where is my mind, then showed that they were VERY prepared to bring the rock with bullet. i knew i was in for it... jane was amazing live. they all sing "JAAA-EEE-ANE!!!"- awesome. the next best part was i want rock'n'roll. it was the most rocking performance of any song i had ever seen. then right after that came "there goes nadine"... THIS kicked the previous song off the throne! it rocked SO MUCH. unbelievable, really.
rich was amazing. he was on fire.
frank screamed a lot and seemed to be in really good spirits- just wanting to rock like none other.
the best rock'n'roll show i had ever seen!

I think you enjoyed it Dan, and I enjoyed your review. So, what is Dog in the Sand about? |

Just to add to Dan's great review...
Last night was the 5th time I've seen the FB with the Catholics. It was the first time I was absolutely mesmerized by Rich Gilbert. Holy shit. This guy tore Shank Hall apart. It is telling that FB spends much non-vocal time checking out just what Gilbert is doing to that guitar of his...
To add, I was the 3rd person in line for the in-store when they decided that no others could fit. At least we got a congenial shrug from the man.
I must concur - the best rock show I've seen (at least since 2000 tour).

He played End of miles-yesssss!!!!
What a show it was!! I kept comparing it to the last Frank Black show here at Shank and,the crowd was so much more in tune this time I thought. It was nice to not hear them yelling out for Pixies songs and it actually made hearing the Pixies numbers much more enjoyable.
The entire show was awesome and it was really cool to look across the crowd and see peoples eyes lighting up for their favorite songs and then mouthing every word along with Frank.
The man and his band are amazing! I got to thank him for the show and for playing my favorite song as he sat on a stack of equipment outside. Frank had that look of exaustion but with a contented happy smile! I hope he realizes how important and vital he is in this music mayhem of today. Franks words and music stand far above most and sit right alongside some who have been at it for decades!
Thanks again for a great show! For those who haven't seen them yet get the ticket NOW! *pours fifth cup of coffee*

he never said what dog in the sand is about...
that new "french hills" song is really amazing. i can't wait to hear the new album.
OH YEAH!!! he said what the name of the new album is at the in-store. BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY!! something like 'count your tears'. apparently there was a song they wrote with the same title which they decided not to use. so, they made the it the name of the album. he then went on this funny tirade about led zeppelin and naming an album something and putting the same song on a different album.
do you think the cover of dirty old town will be on the new album?

an omission?
Oddly enough, I meant to mention this... They did a thunderous version of 666 (4th/5th song). In great contrast to the version from DOG tour... |

Cool.
I hope dirty ol town is on the new album. Though, I wonder if you can get the feel (from the concert) of that song to album. I suppose if you can, live to 2-track is the way to do it. c |

i wonder that, too. like, i know "there goes nadine" won't rock as much on the album, but i hope it rocks almost as much.

Wow. I'm jealous, Jose. You got to hear Chip Away Boy? And Southbound Bevy? And 1/5th of Bartholomew? (I would have taken 1/8 and been happy) Sounds like a great time. |

I was at three shows last year when he was touring on the pre-release tour of BLD/DW, and then at two on his Canadian tour, and NOT ONCE have I heard End of Miles! I don't even have a live recording of it, and it's definitely my favourite on the latest albums, though I suppose I like Jane the Queen of Love live better than the End of Miles album version. But who knows, maybe I'd like End of Miles live better than Jane live, and that would be make it, well, better than awesome. Super awesome, or something, to quote Strongbad.
Can't wait for the new album, btw, though I'm curious how franktaper knows that Dirty Old Town isn't on it. Do we have a song list that I haven't seen somewhere? |

theres a live recording of it on the ftp in the 2002 show. the mp3s arent named after the songs though so youll have to download the TXT file and read it first to figure out which is end of miles. its a great version of it though.

...I only screamed END OF MILES about six times as Frank and the Catholics were leaving stage so, I am hoping that they heard and made a decision as they headed backstage...at least, we would all like this to be the case when we yell our favorite song right?...I absolutely love the idea lyrically for this song. How people travel miles in search of their "paradise" and end up in a sense at their last outpost, the mighty Pacific! Huh, yet another 'Ocean song'...love it!
