Recently discussed was Mr. Thompson's opinion of Sonic Youth. How about the child that Sonic Youth and the Pixies (and maybe Dino Jr) had together: Pavement? Anyone know if he's into them?

I always kinda thought Pavement was Mark E. Smith's bastard child.

Yeah the new Malkmus CD is great. Though, if this guy does not like FB, I gotta start wondering....

I read in an interview with Guided By Voices that they hated
another lo-fi geekrock band. But they insisted that the name of
the band wouldn't be named in the article.
''No Pavements The Guys'' said the article after that sentence.

I love GBV and I love Pavement.
It's a bit weird they hate eachother.
But I can live with it...

They don't hate eachother. Pollard has stated lots of times that Pavement are one of the few bands around he likes, along with Superchunk and the Grifters.

I always love Pavement topics because once again I can tell how their drummer recorded my first CD and he is friends with me and lives a few miles from my house.

Steve W. loves the Pixies but really hasn't heard any of FB solo stuff.

We talked a good spec about the Pixies and Frank, obviously because he's my favortite writer and performer. The only story Steve W. ever told of FB was way back at some festival where both bands were playing, some kid was backstage and tried to give FB his demo, and FB chucked it at him and said why would I want to hear this shit. Of course this is all paraphrased.

So, what's the deal with Malkmus not liking FB????????????????? Please ellaborate.

Malkmus's new album is not as good as the first, imo..neither really compare well to Pavement, but they still have their charm.. My two cents..

yah the new malkmus is defintily not as good as the first, but it still has its moments. however i think his first solo is better than any pavement ive heard (though i only have slanted and enchanted and brighten the corners). pavement songs tend to ramble too much in my opinion, the slow ones. the first malkmus solo seems very focused and i like that.

i like most of the Pavement i've heard and they've definitely got a few really great songs.. but i have to say, after watching their videos (i was never into them back in the day) i was kind of turned off by their ultra-white, ivy league image.. i heard that Malkmus is basically a trust fund baby..

not that you should hold it against someone for having a trust fund (at least that frees people up to make more music, to put out in the world).. but it makes sense ..

Is Malkmus' bad opinion of Frank in regards to his personality or his music?

I like the new Malkmus and Jicks record, but not nearly as much as the first SM solo record. The new SM is very jammy and less melody based, but damn if "Vanessa From Queens," "Craw Song," "Us" and another one that has the bitchin' intro and is about two mintues long aren't great songs.

Westy's drumming was always tight... perhaps one of the things that kept the band solid live.

For those wondering, Malkmus had said in an interview that he didn't want to slip into obscurity like Frank Black. Im not sure if that means he dislikes him just he doesn't wanna go that way. I have the first Malkmus album and although its got nothing wrong with it it also has nothing right with it. As far as Im concerned it has no stand outs just a bunch of decent songs. I also own Preston School Of Industry and although a percentage of the songs aren't to good there are 3 excellent songs which ultimately makes me prefer listening to that album. Funny how all those 3 songs are Pavement rejects though.

Which were rejects?

All this Sounds Gas is a decent album, but just sounds a little, um, dated.

It just didn't click with me.

"Malkmus had said in an interview that he didn't want to slip into obscurity like Frank Black"

For real? If he really said that, he's a bit of a dick. Last FB+C gig I went to was totally mobbed, with kids who are getting into FB+C as well as older people who were into the Pixies. Obscurity? Most of them would be like "Steven who"? I've heard some Malkmus stuff, it was pretty mince compared to Pavement or the Silver Jews, and utter pish compared to anything Frank Black's ever been involved in (except for the Cult of Ray, natch).

Malkmus' solo career won't be as long and exciting as Frank's, mainly because he doesn't have much diversity in his voice. Every song he sings in the same way. This worked great for Pavement, but even near the end of Pavement (I love all their albums), Malk's voice started to become a little boring, while I remember finding it amazingly cool when I first heard Slanted and Enchanted. Frank meanwhile has a great voice and he can sing in all different keys and styles, screaming to crooning to falsetto-ing to Lou Reed-ing (which is all Malk does). Also, Frank no longer relies on the lyrical techniques he invented with the Pixies, instead opting to mature while at the same time retaining the enigmatic aspect of his Pixies words. Malk is kind of becoming a one-trick pony lyrically, he can still write a great line, but his rhyming is getting a bit predictable (an area Frank excells at). Still, I'll bet Malk didn't mean any harm to Frank, it was probably an off the cuff remark, and I do still enjoy the Jicks albums despite their tameness/sameness.

Yeah I'm sure the comment was later regretted, particularly as it's the only thing that Malk's said in an interview that anybody has ever taken any notice of.

I agree with you about Frank's voice. I think it's fantastic that he's started SCREAMING again. There isn't anyone on this earth that can scream like Frank.

Who do you think would win in a fight between Frank and Malky? I reckon Frank would leave Malky looking like a puddle of minestrone soup.

Yeah, I mean, Frank loads those huge boxes of equipment every day while Malk probably spends his days occupying tanning booths.
