From the Q and A at the Cooking Vinyl site:
quote: Is there one song that you wish you had written, and why?
Good question, Zack, Smell Like Teen Spirit. Money.
I always thought Frank didn't care about fame or money, and that he was not grumpy about the whole Nirvana-stole-a-lot-from-the-pixies-thing
Maybe this is just a joke...
but it sounds terribly sad to me

Methinks, it's meant to be taken tongue-in-cheek. I like when Frank cuts up during interviews. |

The sad thing is that teen spirit is really UMASS. I guess kurt nobrain was more marketable to the teens, being a loser and all. Teens dont listen to ppl who went to college. |

I like Nirvana, Frank Black and the Pixies, amongst others. I also like mopey college rock too, does that count? (I HATE emo though).
And even though I don't think Frank cares about fame or money, I think he would like to appeal to a larger audience other than us cultist geeks. I agree with OliverK. |

He has to care about money some what. It is his job so he's gotta care to make some dough. Plus, he's gotta make money to buy plectrums for his guitar. Those plectrums are pricey!

Seriously, who doesn't care about fame and money on some level? Well, at least money? Yes, it may be lower in priority and importance to some people compared to other things, but EVERYONE cares about money to a certain degree, no matter how enlightened or talented, no matter how non-conformist or politically radical. Anyone who claims otherwise is full of crap, hate to say. I don't think there's anything essentially wrong with F.B.'s statement; in fact, you have to admire the honesty. |

This is an entire other argument.
I think SLTS sounds more like DEBASER. But that's just my no tone ears hearing that.

Forget Smells like teen spirit, at least it's a somewhat good song.
Has anyone heard that AWFUL Puddle of Mudd Song with the lyric "She f--kin' hates me"? Now THAT is a Debaser cop off. The main progression in it is: F Bb G Bb... and debaser is F Bb G Bb... hmm interesting. Same rhythm too. Also interesting that puddle of mudd suck and i hope they drown in a puddle of mudd in hell.

i remember reading that quote and thinking Frank meant "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, and "Money" by Pink Floyd were the 2 songs he wished he'd written. |

I'm pretty sure his response was very non-serious. He doesn't seem to take many of these Q&A's seriously, if you ask me.
MikeW, that's not cool to say that stuff about Kurt. He honestly was as talented as our friend Charlie is, and Nirvana was (still is) as much of a valueable contribution to music as the Pixies are. Take a look at any and every major rock group in the history of rock and roll. I challenge you to name even one of them who was 100% original. Nirvana "ripping off" the Pixies is no different than Elvis "ripping off" black R&B.
As for SLTS similarities, I would have to say Gouge Away would be the best match, but that's just me. As for the Puddle of Mudd (big Nirvana ripoff, but they really do suck) song, it's almost a ripoff of About A Girl. This heavy angry band writing a cute pop song. Sucks. The guy even slightly resembles Kurt by looks and sound. |

SLTS is more than a feeling by boston.
and nirvana wasn't marketed, shit was marketed after them. i doubt they were sitting around an office for a few months wondering which direction they should go and what they should be wearing.
i can't imagine FB's answer to that question being anything other than a little sarcastic joke.

yeah... I agree with SMLTS sounds most like "gouge away" except Pixies song is loud verse, mellow chorus, and SMLTS is mellow verse, loud chorus...
I've spouted this many a time, I saw Nirvana my Sr. year in highschool and it was one of the all time best shows I have ever witnessed...
my top 3 shows: any of the 5 FB shows, Nirvana 1993, White Stripes 2002, Geraldine Fibbers 97, Sleater Kinney 97, Cibo Matto 97, and Dead 1992... (every sonic youth show I've seen sucked ass)...
these are popular to semi-popular bands and out of the very limited selection of shows that i have actuallly been to...
anyone ever heard of "orange whip" or "elephant boy" 2 great bands from Northern Virginia and Maryland that are no more but were awesome bar bands...

Didn't Nevermind come out at around the same time as Trompe Le Monde? They're both '91 releases. And hadn't "Teen Spirit" been played on stage well before that?
(which would dispell the "U-Mass" rip-off thing).
Don't take these Frank quotes so seriously, folks. That line is from an internet chat. Those are always silly and off-the-cuff. Not very reflective usually.
I wouldn't mind having the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" royalty money, myself. |

Wow! Someone here loves the Geraldine Fibbers! I saw them twice and loved the shows (though the sound quality was pretty ugly). Sad they don't exist anymore, I don't particularly care for Scarnella. Nels Cline was there and he was great. And the Chrome Cranks (w/ Bob Bert) opened the 2nd gig.

wow, that's pretty harsh..
i don't really understand the kurt bashing either. or all the "pixies rip off" stuff. it's kind of silly if you ask me.. and besides, the guy was always COMPLETELY up front about how much the Pixies were an influence. so how can you say he was ripping them off?
also, i think you're way off the mark calling him stupid or a loser. he definitely wasn't stupid. reading his biography, it's pretty impressive how focused and determined he was to reach his goals.. the guy was COMPLETELY dedicated and persistent. and made smart, very calculated moves to get to where he got.. which, he got pretty far..
yeah, he killed himself, and that sucks (especially for his daughter), but that's more a testament to how powerful addiciton and depression can be if they're not dealt with, than how much of a "loser" he was.. i saw them too (right before Nevermind came out) open up for Dinosaur Jr. and that was an incredible show.. it's not like they're my favorite band or anything, but i think they were pretty fucking good.. and Kurt Cobain was not dumb.

I the quote from Jyoti Mishra of whitetown, who said he watched Frank Black being interviewed at Montrose and he finally realised that if Frankk can do it, anyone can.
I do find it amusing that the latest tune released by Ash sounds almost identical to Debaser.

You know, back to the grind, no more sweet liberty or rollerblading or jeans or peace or comfortable chairs - MONDAY.
The worst day of the corporate slave week.
And I really have it in for this particular one. Sorry for what I said about Weezer - that was a little extreme, esp. since I only dislike everything I've ever heard by them; does not make them fucktards...

I once read in a review for Cult of Ray (what bastardly reviews those were eh?) that "Men in Black" was a Weezer ripoff. Frank...ripping off Weezer? I gasped. I guess the "ooo ooo" part. But, Weezer probably got that from Pavement's "Cut Your Hair" and anyway, Frank Black was doing the "ooo" before anyone with Where is My Mind. Bastard reviewer

I like how we get along so far. Lets try to keep out the ripping-off stuff. I understand that bands that I started liking after the Pixies disbanded are going to be different then a lot of other fans. We all know the Pixies had more than one sound and they could never be bunched or grouped into one category, which initiated the many groups that were spawned out of this. Sure some of these bands I can’t stand, just as I know there are some groups that I love and a lot of people don’t like. I’m not an elitist or an indie kid. I’m just a fan of music that was lucky to find the Pixies and continue to like Frank Black music. Just like you!

Weezer? Man that's one of my favourite bands. Ok, The Green Album was pretty shitty, but Pinkerton is a classic.
I'm sorry, but the people from Weezer are cool, Pixies fans etc. I'm a bit of a nerd myself, so yeah, I like them. If it hadn't been for weezer, I never knew the pixies or FB

Weezer is excellent...I always loved the vocal harmonies of the first album. The Green Album is terrible, but everything other than that is hot. Their latest album is great, although it does have a few leftovers from The Green Album it seems (Slave [listen to 'O, Girlfriend' then 'Slave'], Possibilities). |

Interesting viewpoints so far... I just don't understand how a Frank Black fan can dislike Weezer. The Weez are huge FB fans, and it shows in most of their stuff. Derek and El Barto have been with me on this since way back in the iMusic board days, I believe...take our word for it...go get a copy of Pinkerton and crank that damn thing up and then come back and tell us Weezer sucks and is nothing more than a ripoff. I doubt that'll happen. Weez and Frank for everone. Just spreading the love....hence my name, FranknWeezer |

i think most frank black fans would dislike weezer. i used to listen to weezer quite a bit, pinkerton especially with its rawness, but haven't cared for them at all the past few years for a variety of reasons.

I'm surprised that people can HATE weezer. I mean out of all the bands you could hate... I dunno. I've liked them since I was 13 (I'm 20 now) and I think they've made some really excellent music. It's funny to me that 13 year olds now are starting to like weezer, and I was 13 when i started liking them. Of course, I really did like them all around, and not just for a single and cuz River's is hot (especially not for that). I still love weezer. And for the green album... it's not spectacular but there are some nice songs on it.

I was a huge weezer fan there for a while, and was highly anticipating the green album but to be honest i just don't like that album, it all just sort of blends together...maladroit's a bit better but nowhere near the quality of the blue album or their classic, Pinkerton...i wish he'd go back to the production values he used on pinkerton as well, it's such a great-sounding album |
