So you lads have a little ways to go until you can start going to those pub things you've heard about. Things will be different for you then.

Just to throw my 2 cents worth in......I don't care for Weezer but don't hate em. They just seem pretty non-interesting to me. I really don't think the typical hardcore FB fan is gonna be a huge fan of Weezer. Of course, I'm also the opposite of a lot of FB fans in that I really like the new records better than the new stuff. I've been a fan since the Pixies "Come On Pilgrim" ep came out, and IMO, each record that Frank has written has bettered the one before it, except for Cult of Ray, it definitely was not better than Teenager, but Pistolero on up has followed this trend IMO. Workshop and BLD are the best 2 records that FB has written yet IMO.
Also surprised to see a lot of young folks here. I assumed you guys were mid 20's to mid 30's (like me, lol). Nice to see that you younger folks are FB fanatics as well. Nice to know that not everyone under 25 is worshipping rap/hip-hop/nu-metal/boy band pop garbage. |

hey, i love nu-metal/boy band pop garage!
in your message you say you like the new stuff better than the new stuff.. that's quite a logicial conundrum..
just joshin. i know you mean better than old stuff..
i agree that Frank keeps getting better.. but for me it's not in such a prefectly incrumental way.. also, it's hard to compare some records.. but for me, self-titled is a fucking gem.. (it actually took a while to really appreciate it. it took coming back to it and then going, "fucking a.. this is some seriously good shit")..
the new records are growing on me every day.. but i still think DOG IN THE SAND is his latter-period masterpiece. a friend of mine asked me to make a best of sampler for that album, so he could check it out.. and i couldn't do it. i had to burn the whole thing.. it's too good. i also bought it for another friend of mine, who i knew wouldn't buy it himself, and he's now a full convert and seeing Frank in Chicago this tour.. spread the love..

I personally never cared for Weezer or Nirvana. You gotta understand, I started listening to the Pixies when I was 7, my older brother was the #1 Pixies Fan I knew. When Nirvan came out I just didnt like em'. They were getting recognition for something they didnt do. There was a quote, "the Replacements found the trail, the Pixies laid down the pavement and Nirvana/Weezer just drove on it" It went something like that. Personally, I never related well to heroin addicts/white trash(Kurt Cobain). When I heard Weezers Undone Sweater, I thought "oh great, a remake of I Bleed, how original"! Although, I do think Pinkerton is a good record, I dont own it. Nevermind is also a good record, way over-produced though. I cant stand drum samples. |

There's a big difference in Weezer and Nirvana. Weezer never got credit for making something new, like Nirvana (Who actually didn't make something new ofcourse!), because Weezer is a real Powerpopband. Powerpop is really 60 music with louder guitars, nothing new at all, just a fine combination of old pop like Beatles with distortion and solo's. Powerpop bands like Fountains of Wayne and Weezer don't have a mellow verse-hard chorus style, most of it is distortion through the whole song (Weezer is a fine example of that). Weezer is Pixies influenced, of course, but doesn't copy of 'remake' their songs at all. You can see the influence in the hard guitars and some lead stuff, but mostly the songs are very different. The only same thing I can see is the Surf swing of their music. But Pixies was more Surftones/Thrashmen kinda surf. Weezer is more Beach Boys (harmonies and all).
Ohh yes, I agree, Pixies and Surftones were Underground. Weezer and Beach Boys are/were more commercial.
And ok, Undone The Sweater Song does have the soft-loud dynamic, you can't call it Grunge or whatsoever by far. That's why Weezer had succes with that single, It was something different at the time (nirvana and other hyped grunge bands), but as far as I can see not something totally new.
