It seems as though a ton of people are aware of Frank but don't really give him the kind of rabid credit that he is due, especially his new stuff with The Mighty Catholics....
Anyone think of anyone else deserving of that kind of recognition, but never getting it?
I'd have to say Adam Franklin of Swervedriver. That's about the only one I can think of personally.
and... does being concerned by this kind of stuff make me a boring person? |

No, it's a good point. Sometimes I wonder when I see some random guy I've never heard of if maybe he has a similiar fanatical fanbase that Frank has. |

nice topic. i would say Matt Johnson from The the. not too sure if any of you have heard of them... he wrote some fantastic albums (like soul mining and dusk) and collaborated with greats like sinead o connor, johnny marr and (ahem!) neneh cherry. 2000s Naked Self album is a hum dinger - great lyrics and amazing tunes. again - not too sure about commercial success - although his albums have always met with favourable reviews. cheers

I like David Byrne and have thought that he has many parallels with Frank Black. Both left (broke up) successful bands and have generally been thought to be less successful since they did, but reality they are both still doing it and doing it well. Both write interesting, thoughtful lyrics. Well, maybe that's all of the parallels (both occasionally sing in spanish), but they do remind me of each other and I believe are both hugely underappreciated. |

Presently No...
Pavement is just as important as the Pixies in my oppinion (see a long winded reply I made ages ago somewhere on the site) but they broke up...
Historically there a lot of great bands but a lot of them are finished now... Frank is still puting out valid and amazing stuff.... faster than anyone else...
That's Better... It's about time I changed my signature |

-Im a huge David Lynch fan...I had no idea he was into Frank.
-I always thought that Frank had a lot of David Byrne in his writing
-I disagree that Pavement even comes close to the importance of Frank |

I think the parralells and unfortunate misappreciation for Lou Reed are about same.
Great fame with VU ------Great Fame with PIX
An album a year to weary onlookers.....UNTIL about 10/15 years into, at which time people started to pick-up.
And also, the are both equally Bowie-backed.
So like Reed and Lynch, Black is equally mass-appreciated by the minority.

I saw David Byrne live last year, and there was a huge crowd. He definitely has a big following, but one doesn't hear much news about him. I don't think the comparison with Frank and David Byrne is a good one, though. The Talking Heads had much more commercial success than Frank or the Pixies ever had.
Paul Westerberg packed them in at The Vogue here in Indy this past Fall. It was just a solo show, but he pulled out quite a few Replacements tunes and sounded great. Personally, I think the Replacements are right up there with the Pixies, but I feel Westerberg's stuff isn't as good as Frank's solo material. |

I think the David Byrne comparison is apt in terms of their writing being similar. |

Howe Gelb, who formed the band Giant Sand and has put out a handful of solo albums as well, is fantastic. Everyone should know about the album Glum, but no one does. www.giantsand.com |

I would say Aimee Mann, and David Bazan (Pedro the Lion)... I don't know what's happening on the rest of the planet regarding them, but I definately don't hear the buzz I think they deserve. They are both awesome lyricists IMHO. I don't find a lot of integrity in most of the "newer" bands, so I really don't listen to many. Outside of say... the Radioheads, Coldplays, PJ Harveys etc etc that have gotten their due and are now more mainstream ,either in popularity or critically, than them being the hidden little bands I liked early in their career...I mostly stick to classic Rock, blues, jazz, and the 80-90's music/performers I "grew up" listening to. (Frank Black, Costello etc). In a way there is something cool about that though. Although I really hope for Frank the world wakes up to him, it's nice to think that some kid that is in to music 20-30 years from now will run across Frank's music and go WOW that's cooool, like I did when I discovered Alex Chilton, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake or people like that for myself the first time.

Franky's a genius. So the few people in his league are easily found : Paul Mccartney, Lou Reed, Iggy & Robert Wyatt. Screw that David Byrne pretentious cunt. That is all. |

Care to share any of your reasons for putting Byrne in the pretentious catagory and leaving McCartney out of it? I love McCartney. I think Ram is a great album, in addition to his work with his first band, but doesn't he seem more pretentious than Byrne. Not that I know anything about either of their personalities or for that matter really care. |

David Lynch is an FB fan. If you watch Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me the numbers 5 6 and 7 appear along with an abstract shot of a monkey. That reference is only speculated though. However, a fact is that David Lynch tried desperately to use the song "Ana" for Lost Highway but couldn't get the rights, so he was forced to use "Eye" by Smashing Pumpkins instead. |

i agree with whoever said elliot smith. he is an amazing songwriter and consistantly comes out with amazing stuff. but i don't know anyone else who continues to be inspired year after year; who comes up with new ideas without trying to be innovative. how does he do it?!? he is just a genius. unlike lou reed, i just never can see Frank Black releasing anything concepty or floppish. |
