I had my second opportunity to see Mr. FB live in the last 6 months in Grand Rapids, MI a few days ago (Tuesday). A local radio station (WGRD) and a venue (the Intersection) arragned a 2 pm (how non-rock n roll is that?) solo acoustic performance by Frank, and only people who listened to GRD and called in could win tickets. Well, GRD blows, but my friend, who is very well connected in the Michigan area, was able to get us free passes. Charles' performance was great, and he even did some storytelling about the origin of the songs. He told the story of Crackity Jones, which many of us know, and the story of "Bullet" from Dog in the Sand. When Charles father died, his brother called him up and told him it was time to go through all of dad's stuff, and they found a plethera of unregistered guns in the attic. What was especially interesting about this was that when they turned them into the police, it was found that a single bullet was loaded in each one, hence track 6 on DITS.
Yeah, FB performed a lot of great songs, such as "Cold Heart of Stone," "All My Ghosts," "Monkey Gone To Heaven," "California Bound," "Whiskey in your Shoe," "Where Is My Mind?," (is it necessary to parenthesize all deez).
The funniest part of the show was halfway through when a GRD DJ came onto the stage and asked Charles to do an interview with him live on the radio. It started out alright, but sure and soon, the DJ began asking Douchebag questions, putting Frank on the spot without even realizing it. Hell, he even asked the no-no cliche "Is there chance of a Pixies reuninon?" Charles played it cool, and said, "we wouldn't be any good. Those times have passed. We're old and much different now." And the DJ said, "Yeah, kind like getting back with an ex-girlfriend. What if they were to put you in a big rubber glove. Safety. Would the reuninon work then?" FB stared at him and said, "I don't follow." The DJ then said, "You know, ex-girlfriend. Rubber glove = condom?" WHAT A DORK!!!
But other than that, it was great to see Charles do a solo acoustic show and hear some of the new material. He came down and hung out with the audience of 100 or so afterwards and was cool about autographs and pictures. I asked him if "Manitoba" will be on the next record, and he said "yes", (That's such a great song). It was fun. Just thought I'd share. |

Ah, I forgot to mention the funniest part. When that douchebag of a DJ made that stupid rubber glove comment, there was silence since Frank was obviously put off and weirded out, and this guy in the audience sitting right in front of me yelled out, while the radio station was on the air, "GRG BLOWS!" The majority of the audience laughed and DJ about wet his pants. Funniest thing EVER! |

That is really funny. Poor Frank - how many crappy interviews has he had to endure re the topic of the Pixies reunion? |

solid post tartar. thanks for passing on the info. did frank tell any other good stories? i love seeing frank in interviews. he's a very funny guy.
i saw the catholics play in chicago about 4 years ago. he didn't tell any stories but he did say some funny shit. he told the audience that the songs from the first catholics album are in alphabetical order. he then played six-sixty-six, solid gold and then said would play another "s" song. but he made a mistake and played an "i" song- i need peace. after the song he said he had trouble with the alphabet and division as well. |

Holy shit man! I laughed at loud at that one...haha...I can just see it now. That sounds like something you'd see on The Simpsons or an Adam Sandlar movie. I love it...I would have loved to have been there. Fucking hilarious. I'm still laughing. Good post man, glad you had a good time :) |
