I would say Joey but I would much rather see Lyle Workman back.

I got me so down I got me a headache.

I think Frank mentioned in an interview about how Joey blows them all away everytime he plays with them, something to do with how cool he makes his guitar sound. That about says it all really,Im your speaking of Dave Phillips if so I'd say hes technically a better guitarist but then he aint Joey Santiago. If you understand me.

I'd rather have Joey on lead just because he's joey but I love Dave on pedal steel guitar

I think the other guitarists frank has played with are technically better than Joey. But they're quite ordinary : they make "solos"
They don't have the style and the sound of Mr Joey.

I agree, I donīt like richīs style...to many colours for my vision and sometimes many irritating solos. No style at all. Dave is much cooler and Joey :-)

Just my opinion

i like em all but if i had to pick i would say rich gilbert. i saw him live and thought he was extremely talented and entertaining. i really like the balance with the current line up. dave mccaffrey is pretty cool playing the bass and then you've got rich who can be a fuckin madman!

I agree.. I've never seen Joey live but my jaw just dropped after seeing Rich.. he sort of reminds me of Tom Verlaine from Television how he played. I think he was just amazing.. either way it's a compliment to Frank because he obviously knows how to find great guitarists.

i think lyle workman is the best guitarist, maybe joey might be more technical - but lyles style (hey - that rhymes!) suits FB more. still think rich and dave P are fantastic too.

There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough.

Joey...more "technical" than Lyle is? i beg to differ, man! i think you have it completely switched around......Lyle is the virtuoso of the two, Joey is a more visceral, go-with-your-gut feeling kind of guitarist. Not to say that both of them don't kick major ass.

hey alex
hmmm... i think that joeys work on pixies albums was so innovative at the time of their release - and certainly no mean feat to perform - so in that respect i would rate joey as a highly technical guitarist but yeah - i do see yer point about him being visceral and thats cool by me fella. although joey will always be one of my fave guitarists (along with eddy hazel from funkadelic) i do still think lyle is amazingly talented and a valued part of FBs team. cheers.

i cant get over how damn entertainging rich gilbert is. i saw one show in South Carolina and was dissapointed at gilbert, during nice BLD ballads he would break out in a solo, it was irritating but after seeing him in florida i was stunned. I cant say if he is technically better than joey or lyle but his stage presents is a show in its self. and also dave philips is suave as hell, he is truely amazing. its entertaining to see him switch from rolled cigarettes to regular and also how long he can go without smoking during the show.

rich gilbert is definately a better technical guitarist than joey santiago. but joey santiago's lead is just perfect. it isn't excessive; it just fits. it is more expressive than technical, and that is what i really love about it. on an album i would rather hear a joey santiago part, but live, i think rich gilbert is very very cool!! and rich is definately one of my favorite guitarists! it's a great setup with dave philips and rich gilbert switching off on pedal steel...

Rich Gilbert is a technically better guitarist than Joey but Joey's style of play is totally unlike anyone else; if you listen to his solos they're sometimes 'scribbled' ina a totally manic way that fits with the high strung energy of the songs. I'm trying to think of a good example but I can't coz I'm at work and the radios on...All Over the World is probably the best example.

Got to agree with Romanoff on the point that Rich occasionally overdoes it on the quieter songs - in Vancouver he was doing all this heavy feedback noise over Los Angeles, which is fine in the metal-machine-meldown bits but not during the shimmery acoustic "pouring rain" bits. Still I think he's a brilliant guitarist and is essential to the Catholics, plus his stage presence is completely hat-stand entertaining. Anybody who plays lead guitar where Joey used to is going to be damned by comparison no matter who they are or how they play.

This gets tricky coz I love Rich Gilbert more than any other guitarist...but there is a small part of me that absolutely YEARNS to see Joey and Frank on a stage together; know what I mean?

Its like a kid wanting their divorced parents to reunite...know what I mean?

Rich Gilbert. Definitely.

I've actually gotten to the point where I don't think I would go to a solo Frank Black show because I would miss Rich Gilbert's guitar and stage presence too much. I started listening to the Tanya Donelly stuff he worked on just because he worked on it. And, really, the fact that I'm obsessed with the new Blackstone Valley Sinners record is a testament to my love since drum machines make me want to throw up. Really, if you haven't picked it up, do. There are some incredibly tasty instrumentals on it and Slim Cessna's voice is a dream.

I suppose my point is this. The Pixies were the first band I ever liked. The first cassette tape I ever bought was Doolittle. I loved everything about them and listened to them obsessively. But, golly, for where I am right now I'd rather go see Frank Black and the Catholics. I'd rather listen to Black Letter Days than Surfer Rosa. And I think Rich Gilbert fits perfectly with what Frank Black is doing right now.

All the guitarists are great EXCEPT for Dave P. (the actual "new guy"). I'm sorry dave fans, but he adds very little to the catholics sound other than providing more sound texture. Some of his licks on Devil's Workshop are very disappointing to say the least. There is such a potential for great riffs, but Dave simply drops the ball.

Licks on Devils Workshop?
How do you know that's Dave?
It could be Joey or Lyle or even Moris Tepper
The booklet doesn't say who played what on which song

Axuilery (sorry about the spelling)Guitarist is how Frank used to describe him. I think his way way more than that now

I personally am not extremely thrilled about a lot of the Devil's Workshop solos, whoever is doing them (which I'm not sure about either.)

Teenger, Cult of Ray, Pistolero, self-titled...those have great fucking leadwork!

by the way - for the record i would like to say that Dave Phillips is an AMAZING guitarist and a very important part of FBs team. as are all of his guitarists. Dave was absolutely awesome in Dublin and meath 2 years ago. i dont think its fair to slate him.

my 2 cents.
