Didn't "management" have him cut a bunch of songs off Cult of Ray, some of which (Announcement) are generally considered better than certain album tracks? You'd figure they'd learn from their mistake, Cult of Ray would have been a much better album with some of the diverse outtakes thrown into the mix. |

Manitoba will make the album, he plays it so often at shows, I would be surprised if it wouldn't make it.
I hear it all in my head, the church choir on manitoba. Sounds very good, haha...

Yup, still live to 2-track from what I've heard, just a LOT of people playing simultaneously. :) |

i wonder if they are using the mobile studio for it, i would think if they were it would have been done a long time ago. if they chose to do it in a studio but still live like DITS, itd probably take longer

Sorry if this has already been answered but were the van dyke parks rumors ever confirmed? In other words, did he REALLY help write some of the songs? |

On the last proper Matthew Sweet album "In Reverse", he dug deep into his Brian Wilson obsession by recording in some of the same big rooms that the Beach Boys did in their heyday. In an effort to emulate the larger than life sound they got on those albums, he used some of the same studio musicians they did to augment his core band, and at times they tracked completely live with up to 13 people playing at once.
This was done to multi-track however, and then they went back and manipulated and overdubbed vocals, but still, for those who get a kick out of this kind of stuff, it's a similar approach to keeping everyone on their toes and hoping for happy accidents.

Does anyone besides me think that this album is just going to be incredible (I'm sure you all do)? I'm so excited about it that I will actually be looking forward to summer being over and school starting again just so it can be September. I think this is going to be the best one yet by far. |

Peter, that's pretty cool... I really can't wait for this next album, I'm definitely with NimrodsSon. There will be at least one benefit to summer being over... it's almost like now I don't mind Mondays because I get to see the new Strongbad email. :) I've been promising myself I wouldn't d/l the advance MP3s that usually find their way on to the net (like BLD & DW), but I'm not sure I can hold out. It would just make getting the CD that much more exciting to have not already heard the songs several thousand times on my 'pooter. |

What's everyone's take on the new album title? It kind of took me by surprise, usually Frank's titles are cryptic "Teenager of the Year" "Cult of Ray" "Dog in the Sand", this one seems very open. It sounds like something Nick Cave of Michael Gira would title an album |

I'll be honest, not my favourite album title of all time, that's for sure. I liked Madams at Five (or Nine or whatever it was) better than Show Me Your Tears, but I suspect that the album title is commenting of FB's acceptance of more melancholy tunes than he would have touched in his younger years... that or it's an acrostic for some girl named Smyt. Or the restaurant chain Smitty's, except in code by misspelling and removing/rearranging letters.
Wow, that's deep. Suddenly, I love the new album title. :) |

I think it's his most emotional album title so far (if that makes sense) and I dig it. Can't wait for the whole enchillada! |
