Straight from the source.
Hi Sarah, I am part of the Frank Black street team for you here in Phoenix. I just wanted to drop a line real quick to see if you have any information on a release date for a new Frank Black album. I have been hearing a lot of rumors that he has one "in the can." Thanks a lot, Dan Drago
Hi Dan,
The rumors are true - while I don't think it's been mastered yet or anything, the new album is pretty much done. We're looking at a September release date!
Sarah
I can't wait for the new album.
I got me so down I got me a headache. |

I don't know about you all, but i would sure like to hear some more "hard rocking numbers". maybe we can convince managment to include them. |

who is "management"? I have trouble imagining this. It seems like the man himself has been at the helm on the last several albums.
I'm fascinated at how these albums are made so I appreciate reading this stuff! |

He still has management...Ken Goes is still his manager, right? The job of the manager is to take care of the business aspect. I know Scott Boutier is the tour manager...they have their own sound guy...and they have a producer (whose name escapes me right now) that is working on their new album and I believe has worked with them in the past. |

i thought Ben Murphy worked on it (who produced BLD and DW), in addition to others.. it sounds like the album was recorded in bits and pieces, with different people etc..

Stan Ridgeway, that's the one I was looking for. Nick Vincent has produced em in the pass...come to think of it, I'm pretty sure never produced any of his albums alone. |

i don't like the way COR sounds for the most part - some people are naturally producers, some aren't - frank is a great songwriter/performer, but not a producer. or at least not by himself

I heard from somewhere, I think, that Frank's wife has convinced him to go with more obvious meanings, but I have no idea if this is true (and I certainly don't want to perpetuate rumours). I really hope I'm wrong though, but I'm curious if anyone else heard this. I much prefer being able to work at a meaning and even come up with my own interpretation, rather than having it just given to me. If it is true though, to her credit, she apparently is also the reason that we have lyrics in the CDs, which I am more than thankful for. It's not like Frank is known for using exclusively everyday words. :) |

Yes Stan has been producing, and Ben is engineering like a monster. The night I was there, it was 13 of us at once going live to stereo! Ben didn't seem the slightest bit frantic about the workload and he and Rich functioned as Stan's extended ears on the takes where Stan sang and/or played harmonica. Stan was really great at maintaining the vibe even after the 13th take or however many. I'm sure the Catholics are used to it but there were a lot of guests that night, many of us are more used to overdubbing our parts. I'm glad that wasn't the procedure cause I got to hang out with the whole band and a whole other awesome legendary fellow who guested too.
Lyrically, this one song was not at all cryptic, my girlfriend got the basic story after the 6th take or so. She asked Charles if it was what she thought, and he said she was right on and seemed delighted. That said, it is not bone-simple sledgehammer at all. It is beautiful and mysterious. It helped that we had lyric sheets... would not have figgerd it as quickly without. My girlfriend is a gifted lyricist herself. |

Aye that. But would his BM (no slight intended) actually influence the musical choices? Maybe they're good friends. |

I really like the Cult production, though I know i'm in the minority. I like the drum sound, really low, thumpa thumpa. And the 50's-ish reverb that crops up. I'm not sure I could handle more than one album sounding like it, but as it stands alone, I enjoy it. |

I like the FB - guitar left, Lyle - guitar right thing. Sometimes I pan hard left and listen to the song without all that racket! Just as often I'll go the other way and dig deep into the Work-man.
The Marsist is one of the craziest songs I can think of. It still blows my mind just to hear it in my head. I guess all this is going off topic now... |

i don't think it had anything to do with his wife (though i don't really know)..
i remember around the time Pixies split, Frank talked a lot about how he wanted to start writing more linear stuff.. how it was actually harder to write linear songs and he wanted to get better at that..

Let's get back to the real issue. There are supposedly 15 tracks slated for the album, and management wants to cut two of them? Why? If the man wants the songs on the album then they belong there. Frank Black knows what he is doing. CAN I GET AN AMEN?!

Another factor is the lyric. I say "why bother?", but my wife insists that some of the fans really like the lyric sheets so I defer to her judgement

hey bill - Stan called us in to sing backups on a song called Manitoba. My main thing is guitar textures, but I sure was glad for the vocal harmony experiences I've had in some of my bands recording sessions. Truth be told, Stan really wanted my girlfriend, who sings a lot and had a higher range than everyone else at the sessions, to help with the higher register. But as they decided to make the chorus backing vocals something like a small town church choir effect, Stan graciously extended the invitation to me as well. Can you imagine my mind - within a minute of entering the studio we were brought in to the lounge and given lyric sheets and asked to come up with vocal parts as Our Hero strummed and sang away on the sofa. Thank God I could still maintain a modicum of professionality. The vibe was so relaxed that I wasn't even nervous! Just stunned. It went really well. Hope it makes the album! |
