Well.
Well well well, fucking well.
I am sorry this is not going to be the typical listing of the set list review because I can't remember the order, but suffice it to say, every song was perfectly chosen. The new ones were awesome as well.
Nashville - Didn't know what to expect crowd wise but fortunately it was a BEAUTIFUL day and night and some folks wanted to forget about THE LOOMING WAR which actually started about the time FRANK took the stage. It was sold out. Packed.
David Lovering was loved by the crowd. I got sorta frightened for a sec because there was some REDNECKS shouting out shit and some dumbass who got up on stage when he shouldn't have during his act. All that subsided though.
It was LOUD. My ears are still fiercely ringing. Everyone CHEERED LOUDLY as well. After each and EVERY song. I swear I saw Frank smile quite a bit from the reception they recieved. It was powerful, the sound was incredible. I decided to hang back and listen rather than try and get right up under their noses and I am glad I did because I got to hear how amazing each and every member of the band is. Rich was the "Star" of the show. His piano playing is awesome.
I already like the new songs I heard. The guy can't fail lately with this band.
The talk I heard after the show was that EVERYONE thought it was perfect. MANY were impressed with Rich's style. Frank has dropped weight and Dave apparently found it but decided to keep it himself.
Western shirts abounded this eve, wonder if it had anything to do with their jaunt through the south.
Frank even smiled and said "I'll try not to take so long to come back next time..." Which was cool because he hadn't been here since COR and the time I got to meet him I asked if he would come back to the Nashvegas area.
They are the best Goddamned Bar Band ever in existence.
So WHO ELSE was there...I didn't get to meet anyone :(

I was there! Maybe you saw the old guy in the TMBG shirt crammed up in the front? Drove all the way from Indy because I can't make the show here at Birdy's. I also met Behemoth from this site at the concert. He's from West Va, and said he follows the band around all over the place-- said he's going to the KY show tonight.
I thought it was a great show as well. It WAS loud! I wonder if the sound was better in the back? I was right up front and thought Frank's voice mike wasn't turned up enough. He sounded good on the quieter numbers (Farewell Bend, Monkey, Cold Heart of Stone), but was difficult to hear on louder ones (I Want Rock and Roll, Where is My Mind, Holiday Song)
Agree about the dumbasses to the right of the stage when Lovering entertained. They were dicks.
Frank kicked it hard for over 2 hours. Great energy, great crowd. Personally, I didn't like it as well as the DITS show I saw in Columbus-- the sound was better and so was the setlist. He played lots of new stuff which is pretty good, but unfamiliar to a lot of people. Too much new stuff in my opinion. Beautiful Day/Horrible Day is my favorite of the new ones.
Most of the same tunes were on the setlist that have been on all the others on this leg of the tour. Some standouts: Calistan (awesome version), Sir Rockabye, All My Ghosts, Los Angeles, Gouge Away (I know he plays it every night, but it was especially good), Southbound Bevy, Robert Onion, Bullet, and California Bound. Did he play "Do You Feel Bad About it?" It seems like he did. Maybe someone else can give a more complete list.
Missing songs that would've been nice: Helouise, Velvety, Thalassocracy, Western Star
Exit Inn is a good place for a concert. |

Oh yeah, the band rocked! McCaffrey and Rich Gilbert are incredibly talented. They were almost as much fun to watch as the man. |

Really I could say that as I was in the back, the sound was great, though loud, I heard his voice on all the songs and he sounded great. That's one thing about being squished right in front, it's cool to be close but I found you can hear everything better (duh) if you are in the back.
I am still buzzing about the show. I thought it was better and I was AT the Columbus DITS show!!!
Maybe it was juest because it was my town and I plyed on that stage as well and I was so impressed that everyone got off their asses and made it to the show.

i made the mistake of going right up to frank, at his feet practically, the first time i saw him and was on the same plane as the speakers which were projecting past me, which meant hearing his voice was difficult. so its much better if youre in the middle to back

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how much Frank SCREAMED like Black Francis last night.
Not because he couldn't hear the vocals, his singing was great but I mean he just LET LOOSE all night. TOP FORM.
He has the air of confidence and just stares like "yeah, beat that. There's some Rock and Roll for ya, kiddos". Of course, if the Catholics were backing me up, I'd probably have that smug attitude myself.

I met up w/ Bohemoth last night and he's a very nice guy. He said the Nashville show was one of the best he's been to. I'm very happy for you guys, but also a little jealous. The Louisville show SOUNDED really good, but I didn't really care for the crowd much. I realize that sounds grumpy, and I didn't mention it in the response I made about the show. It was an 18 and over thing and that can sometimes make for a wierd mix--which it did. I love seeing him though and I'm never really disappointed. I'm hoping the Cinci. show will give me the fix I need. I now find it very difficult to see only one. He has lost some weight, you're right. |

I looked for that Sun Records shirt Swimmer but I never did see you. I hung out in back by the mixing board all night. The sound was exceptional....I think Frank wore out the guy on the board. Anyway, I loved the concert...I mean Frank always goes full throttle. I saw him in Athens, GA right after the first Catholics release and also in Nashville after COR. Thought he was better on both of those occasions. I guess what dissapointed me is that he just released two cd's and instead of playing tunes off of them, he played several songs off what will be his new CD. Frank doesn't really need to promote his CD's....are there any of us who don't rush out and get his new stuff immediately. I would have loved to have heard Superabound. He pretty much left his debut, COR, and Pistolero alone, which bummed me a bit. Otherwise, the show rocked and the crowd was incredible...maybe the best I've seen. You're right that Frank really seemed to enjoy the crowd and Nashville in general. Hope that means that he'll come back soon! |

I was in front of the mixing board down the step on the main floor.
Whoops. |

Then you must have been right in front of us, Swimmer. I hope you weren't that guy who collapsed and cracked his head on the beam. |

No, I didn't crack my head so that wasn't me!
I did get my mind blown though. It was a beautiful show.
Oh and far be it from me to talk about people's weight. I could care less if Frank was Billy Beanpole or Buddah. As long as he stays healthy, I don't even think about it. And also I myself didn't think Dave Mac looked heavier, my wife (who specifically chooses to be on the same side as Dave whom she loves *sigh*) thought that life on the road and all the fast food joints seemed to be taking a little toll on Dave. She came up with that little zinger and I thought it was cute and funny (just like her) so I put it in!
But it is true that Frank has been doing good obviously by the looks of things on whatever regemin he is on concerning his weight.
It can take a lot out of you to put out that level of energy and showmanship each night if you are carriying around more weight than you need to be.
I want Frank and Friends to be around for a LONG TIME and I'd hate to see anyone have health problems that could destroy that possibility.
Also, I hope they are protecting their ears. I don't want to sound like an old fogey, but a constant ringing in your ears can drive you up a wall.
Let's just say I speak from personal experience.

Yeah, I don't personally care what Frank LOOKS like, but when I saw them in April 2001 - he was rather large and I was worried about him. Am very glad he seems to be healthier now. |
