I went to both the in-store acoustic performance and the show at the social last night in Orlando. First off, here are the setlists:
3/12/03 Park Ave. Records In-Store
(not in order)
Crackity Jones Mr. Grieves Holiday Song Manitoba Goodbye Lorraine (minus last verse) New House Of The Pope Humboldt County Massacre (1 verse) Bullet How You Went So Far Cold Heart Of Stone Whiskey In Your Shoes Los Angeles Robert Onion
3/12/03 The Social
(in order)
The Snake (new song?) Hermaphroditos I Want Rock n' Roll Gouge Away Crackity Jones 'hills of central france/ the sign i'm looking for..' Black Letter Day How You Went So Far Cactus Whiskey In Your Shoes Monkey Gone To Heaven Southbound Bevy Bullet Jane, The Queen Of Love The New House Of the Pope Mr. Grieves Headache Robert Onion Horrible Day Goodbye Lorraine Nimrod's Son Six Sixty-Six Black Rider Nadine Sister Isabel John The Revelator ---------- Where Is My Mind California Bound
It was my first Frank Black & The Catholics show, and I was dutifuly impressed. Frank was very talkative during the in-store appearance, chatting constantly about random topics, even in the middle of songs. References included: Arlo Guthrie, Six Million Dollar Man, R.E.M., Tivo, Mr. Show, C#Cm, spilling salsa on his shirt earlier in the day but it being okay because he wiped it off with beer, and the ever popular topic of forgetting songs. When someone requested 'Humboldt' he said that he would try it, but that he didn't think he could remember it, sure enough, he couldn't get past the first verse. Very nice nonetheless, he said that he would talk with the band after the in-store to try to remember it, which kinda made me think he would play it at the Social, but he didn't. Also, he forgot the last verse to 'Goodbye Lorraine' and said that he should know it seeing how he's been playing it at the past 10 or so shows, but that he couldn't remember it. A little bit of crowd interaction, with Frank saying at different times that the crowd asked for really hard songs for requests, and also that he was going to play something we would actually know (after playing a few new songs) before he launched into 'Los Angeles'. I was glad that he played a few different songs at the acoustic show than he did later on that night, the only thing that was regrettable was that I couldn't be any closer, as all I could really see was the top of his head. Oh well. A brilliant way to begin the night.
After this, some of my friends stayed to meet Frank and get pictures and autographs and such, and some of us, including myself, headed out to the social to get good positioning for the show. The ones who stayed mentioned that Frank was really nice, and they were able to get a few things signed and a few pictures. So, at the Social we had to wait quite a bit, and then finally David Lovering came on stage. Very amusing, thought it lost energy and a bit of my interest towards the end. Basically, he did a few science experiments type things, though it seemed more like a magic show to me. First he tried to make us blow out some candle, but we couldn't, and then he blew it out with some air vortex toy from the 70's that Blammo made. After this, he busted out his air cannon vortex, which consisted of a drum cylinder with a hole in one side and foil and stuff in the other, which he put smoke into and shot pretty damn big smoke rings out of accross the club. The most impressive part, in my opinion. After this he showed the conductivity of a pickles and made them glow. Then he had some meteorite from China or something which was supposed to have magical energy or something and he did lame things with that. When he was waiting for one of his instruments to warm up, he initiated a short 'Pixies Q & A' with the crowd, the highlight of which for me was him doing a 'La-La Love You' "YEAH".
Soon after this the Catholics, and then Frank Black took the stage. It was amazing. I was totally unprepared for the madness that is Rich. He was completely amazing and even mesmerizing at times. I had never heard of the first song "The Snake", so I assume that it's a new one. Something like "I am the snake..." in the chorus. It was pretty good, but not immediately catching, but it was a bit hard to hear it at first, I think it took my ears about two songs to adjust to the loudness since I was pretty close. I'm kind of at a loss about what to say about the show, seeing how impressed I was, I think it's still settling in my mind, about the only thing that was slightly dissapointing was "Monkey Gone To Heaven", but eh. Of the Pixies tunes, I thought "Nimrod's Son" was the most impressive... The crowd seemed to be most into "Headache" and "Where Is My Mind?" .. with us doing the "ooooh oooh" during the extended intro and outro. "I Want Rock n' Roll" also stands out a bit, because I thought it fit the live very nicely, and sounded much better than on "Pistolero", especially with Rich's insane guitar work. Frank and the rest of the band were amazing, but Rich was by far the highlight, he was a fucking madman, and his solos were just awe-inspiring. To those going to future shows, I suggest going to the FTP server and downloading the live mp3s of 'Manitoba', 'John The Revelator', 'There Goes Nadine', and 'Horrible Day', as I did, as I found that me being familiar with the songs made the experience that much more enjoyable, than my friends who weren't familiar with them or some of the FB solo material. Okay, well that's enough rambling, I hope this was of some interest to someone. |

Thank you very much for the thorough setlists and the evocative review. Sounds like you were impacted much as I was the first time I saw them. Good job. |

In full agreement with the setlist and tone of the review above...
Also chipping in a few more of my crummy picts....
But we noticed a LOT of flashes during the show, and I know that the results MUST be better than these produced by a $30 Cracker Jack Prize Kam....so
....on the boards with 'em!
My swag signed by the hand of the man at the in-store....
Mr. Gilbert
FB rocking early on in the show.....and made to look like a leprechaun by my crummy camera.....Happy St. Pat's Day, everyone!
FB strumming....look at the hole in the body of the guitar.....my man needs a pick guard!
And, in case you needed any more prompting than the other post's description or these photos....
Get out and support him, St. Pete / Tampa!!!

I may have missed something, but he seems to play very few songs off the albums now. Just 13 songs out of the 28? are off the albums 2 of which are covers. Hmmm, anyone have any idea why. |

Everybody feel free to correct any mistakes below, but my song by song breakdown is as follows:
28 Songs
13 "off the albums" 7 Pixies 1 Peel Session With Teenage Fanclub (Sister Isabel) 1 additional cover (John The Revelator) [traditonal] 6 "New" songs
It may be that as soon as the new album comes out, you'll have 19-20 songs "off the albums" as opposed to 13. My guess is that since he already toured last year for BLD/DW that this tour was halfway promoting those two and halfway road-testing the new material.
Furthermore, while I didn't personally think that the Pixies songs were the absolute highlights of the show, they were executed brilliantly (except "Monkey.." in my opinion), added a lot of energy to the crowd, and were fucking great to hear. If you include these in your "off the album", count then you have again 20 songs. However, this was my first FB&TC show, and i've heard that these are pretty much the same Pixies songs he's been playing on the past few tours, and I could see how it would be frustrating to hear the same ones again & again if you've seen more than one tour when there is such a plethora of FB-solo & Pixies material to choose from.
Finally, the new songs were really great to hear, especially 'Manitoba' (at the acoustic in-store), 'Horrible Day', and 'Nadine', the latter one featuring a beautiful extended outro jam by the band. Like I said in my previous post, I had downloaded live MP3s some of the newer songs & covers off the FTP site and felt that this thoroughly enhanced my enjoyment of said songs, and I suggest everyone who is going to a show to do so as well. |

highlights of the orlando show for me were Headache (really got the crowd going), and where is my mind. Plus the new stuff is very good - in the same vein as black letter days - mostly acoustic, laid back, sad songs.

..greetings, sorry for my last post (my first to the group), as i inadvertently repeated ALL of ladronic's post--apologies all around..great review & setlist, thanks..i, too, attended the in-store acoustic session at park. ave. cd's in winter park & then saw the show later at 'the social' in orlando--an entertaining evening to say the least!..i saw the pixies once eons ago at carleton university in ottawa, canada, & also caught 3 solo frank shows up north as well, the latest one being in early '98..haven't had a chance to see him since, so the orlando concert was a "must-see", and well worth going to..i hope to read more reviews from forthcoming shows..cheers to all beega in florida |

ladronic. thanks for the setlist and great review. i'm seeing frank on april 2nd. i've seen frank in concert twice and felt the same way after each show. i've got all of frank's and the pixies cd's and want to get those new songs. i'm taking your excellent advice and checking out the ftp site and am trying to get the new songs- unsuccessfully. i'm computer unsavy. i just picked up this baby a couple months ago- mainly because i wanted to check out the posts at this site from frankus blackus. anyways- i've downloaded the ws_ftp program, successfully logged in but can't hear no tunes! got me so down, i got me a headache. this site looks like something off of my commodore 64 back in grade 6. what do i do once i'm in? go to the remote site? under audio? what file do i choose for the new songs and how do i download it. i've tried a few things- unless it takes a real long time for the file to download? please help, anyone. |

yo fumambru. good things come to those who are patient.
got it figured out. thanks. it took about 6 hours to finally start listening to tunes. but it's definately worth it. i'm listening to 666 live right now. fuckin awesome. i think i'm gonna make another mix cd and put 666 right after maiden's number of the beast. then maybe i'll follow it up with 777 by danzig. do you think frank and the boys are into metal? i really like the new folky type stuff and i'm really looking forward to the new album this spring. but, i think for the following album it would be a real treat to have frank do some metal. |
