Last night I had the extreme honor of seeing Frank Black for the second time. The first was Proud Larry's in Oxford, MS 1/29/99, and this time was at the House of Blues in New Orleans.
I could tell my story for days.
Here goes. Suffice it to say that security at HOB is a bitch, but it didn't affect my experience. I WAS able to get my camcorder in but NOT able to light that f'er up. Did get the audio, though. Apparently our fb.net badges carry SOME weight in these venues if you act like you know what you're doing
On with the show. I noticed they had "Shoot em Down" by an old fave of mine, Twisted Sister, playing pre-show, so that got me fired up. David Lovering wasn't much of a 'scientific phenomenalist', but he was funny, and the crowd responded well to him.
Then the baldheaded buddah of Rock took the stage. FB, looking fitter than in years, was wearing a western-patterned shirt, as was Rich Gilbert (who really stole the show with his beer-bottle, over-the-head, and mouth guitar playing), Scott (Harris) had a cool floppy cowboy hat on and Dave M. and Dave P. were also ready to rock. There was NO talking between songs to the audience, which was fine with me. Really enjoyed Rich on the organ and Dave on the slide, when they weren't playing their GIBSON SG'S (best guitar in the world). Frank played his Takemine acoustic for the first half or so of the show (no pickguard and a Willie Nelson-ish hole in the body) and switched to his Fender Telecaster for the rest of the show. You guys wouldn't believe how many people in that audience had no idea what they were witnessing. "Pixies folks", I guess. Lots of smoke and funny smoke, too...but I was just there to watch Frank rip some tits, which he did.
Setlist:
1. Where is my Mind
2. Bullet
3. Robert Onion
4. New House of the Pope
5. Sir Rockaby (Teenager!)
6. California Bound (What a f'in great song.)
7. Whiskey in your shoes
8. Cold Heart of Stone
9. Holiday Song
10. Mr. Grieves
11. Beautiful Day
12. Manitoba
13. Headache
14. Black Rider
15. Jane the Queen of Love
16. Gouge Away
17. Hermaphraditos
18. Six Sixty Six
19. Monkey Gone to Heaven (gave the 'ape scratching underarms' sign)
20. Crackity Jones
21. I want Rock 'n roll
22. How you went so far
23. Nadine
24. Cactus
ENCORE
25. Southbound Bevy
26. Los Angeles (WOW!)
27. Lyrics went..."hills of central france...it's a sign"????

Well, that's it. Except that I talked to the man after the show, and my wife got to see him up close, too. I urged FB to participate more on our forum and not to be put off by whoever must've ran him off the first time. Oh yeah, and now he has a huge tourbus and has ditched the white van and trailer. He tells me "Yeah we're big time now."

Damn I love that guy.

Proud to be a Frank Black fanatic, I remain....

To Romanoff off, off, off, off,
I had tix to the Wolf show and had to cancel my order b/c of family obligations. Hated to miss that one. I live 3 hrs away in Jackson, MS, but I'd drive to N.O. or most anywhere else reasonably close in a second to see my man Frank.
BTW, Savannah GA has to be one of the coolest towns in the southeast. I can't think of one thing I don't like about it. I lived there for a summer back in '99 and really didn't want to leave. Worked starting up a pet specialty store called Harry Barker down by the river.
Between N.O. and Savannah you've done damn well.
Cheers,
FranknWeezer

Romanoff,
I live in Savannah as well. We should get together sometime if we don't already know each other. I would have hit all of the Florida shows, but I had to play in the St. Patrick's Day Parade during the pouring rain. My band did make it on CNN, though...

I tried to book Frank for Savannah on this tour, but the dates were already firmed up with no wiggling room. I'm already working on his next Southern jaunt, whenever that will be, so have no fear.

I'll keep you informed of any developments.

p.s. FranknWeezer: If I'm not mistaken, the lady that runs Harry Barker used to be involved with Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller fame. I think they broke up on bad terms, because when I met him last year, he told me with a rude smirk to make sure I gave her "every inch of his love," whatever that means...

To Peter....you're abslolutely correct. She used to perform with them as a "Fire Eater" and was one of the first Victoria's Secret models. I think the business moved to Charleston, SC, according to the website. Guess 'ol Penn used to also have her swallow a sword;)
