just rereading all of this... lots of food for thought here! anyway i was thinking this about that line out of Vanishing Spies, "spooking the folk/with talk of the third/but maybe the third/is a joke": couldn't this be referring to close encounters of the THIRD kind?
i know it sounds a bit too obvious, but then... as you probably know a CE3 is when a UFO lands and you actually meet the crew (CE1=seeing the UFO in the sky, CE2=seeing it on the ground, and there's even a 4th category, which includes further contacts if i remember well).
"and maybe the third is a joke" could mean "there's nothing to prove these are not hoaxes"... although it would imply there's no doubt about the other 2... i've always interpreted that song as one of his UFO songs personally: "give me a blip and i'll totally flip" etc. being frank's (or rather the narrator of the song's) version of "i want to believe".
i don't think le cigare volant is about masons? the title means "the flying cigar", it's one of the numerous shapes the UFOs have been known to take across the ages... didn't i hear that this song was about frank's very own encounter with a UFO when he was a kid? i think i did.
calistan is great, i always loved that song. it's always sounded to me like a kind of post-apocalyptic tale ("the valley of tar that once was LA..."). but maybe i read too much sci-fi :-) plus it would seem weird to have karaoke after the apocalypse...

I interpret Calistan a little differently...
I took three days to drive down one street *(Traffic.) The radio on, tuned to the big fleet * (CB or Police scanner) Invisible planes are cracking the concrete * (Plate Techtonics Earthquakes) That's just what some people say
I put down my blanket on Cigarette Butt Beach*(Pollution) I saw the old man, he was doing OK He's making his last stand On old bottles and cans*(He is either living in the polluted mess, or Cali is eco friendly wasn't the recycling stuff all the craze when he wrote this? You can return Cans and bottles for $ also.) 'Round there, Calistan way
(this part talks about the history to me) Used to be sixteen lanes *(LA Freeways) Used to be Nuevo Spain *(It was Spainish held) Used to be Juan Wayne*(It used to be Mexican/Spanish cowboys not hollywood) Used to be Mexico*(Used to be part of Mexico) Used to be Navajo*(Used to be Native American, tho not Navajo I thought they were from the 4 sacred mountains. I think He used Navajo cause it rhymed) Used to be yippy-ay-I-don't know
Went in from the weather when I got wheezy*(Smog) I play some pachinko I play pachisi *(Japanese Casio games, though pachisi has believed Mexican origins) And St. Anne is still making it breezy *(The Santa Anna Wind patterns) In the valley of tar that once was L.A. (I always tool this to mean both pollution and/or the La Breia Tar Pit)
And my best friend he's the king of karaoke He struck up a chord and he took it away Out of the pan And into Japan 'Round there, Calistan way *(This whole part is Japanese stuff. High Asian population in So Cal. And when this was written weren't Japanese still on the spree of buying aloy of American stuff. Japanese very in to American culture to. 'Out of the pan' has always confused me. California has no pan handle...maybe his friend is from a place with a panhandle? Or the in to Japan, could mean he leaves an area known as the Pan and goes in to Little Tokyo or a Japanese burb or area of LA to do his Kareoke-ing?)
As far as Vanishing Spies I had always thought it was about either the Mars Probes or Remote Viewers. But some one suggested it dealt with Ender's Game(Being a sci fi fan you've probably read it). Ender was the THIRD. Having not read the book in a long time I'd have to reread to draw the parellels but I can see where this could fit. But the actual Line is "fear of spooking the folk with talk of the third...or maybe the THIRD MADE a joke" not 'is a joke' But it could be about "Visitors" watching us. |

wow... sorry about misquoting frank! :( i should listen to Teenager more often. so my interpretation of that part is all wrong. not a big deal. i'm not surprised. re: Ender's Game, i did read it, and i should obviously go back to the lyrics to refresh my memories, but frankly (haha) i don't see any connection between the song and O.S. Card's book. isn't it about a small kid being trained to become an alien-killing ubersoldat? thanks a lot for your thoughts on Calistan. i think you're right about that one. (meaning, i think i'm also wrong about that one!) i'll try to think before i post next time!

Oh I wasn't and wouldn't saying you are wrong. That was just my interpretation. The only way I'd know for sure is if I WAS Frank :-D
No prob with the misquote either LOL. I don't claim to be an end all - know it all :D Just trying to help, and give my interpretations, and see what others think. The exchange of ideas all of us share may help us understand what his Frankness is really talking about in some of the more esoteric songs...if they are about anything. Alot of bands just write, though a lot of Franks stuff is specific. Who knows, some of his songs are about his friends...like Manitoba and Sufering supposedly. So there may be no way for us to know with out him telling us. So keep writing what you think stuff is about, I like the discussions. -Mark

I'm pretty much in complete agreement with you about Calistan, but I always thought that "I saw the old man, he was doing OK He's making his last stand On old bottles and cans" could also do double duty in terms of being either about pollution or literally about about visiting his father, who was a barkeeper (making his last stand on old bottles and cans?) Just a thought. . . |

Had I known he was a barkeep, I would've been right there with ya...now that you have informed me...I am :D
The weird word is OLD bottles and cans...though the song is written pre-Bud Born on dating :D LOL Old bottles could mean aged liquor tho I guess! I heard an inteview that he like Scotch, and I believe he said it's what his Dad use to drink so I think you've filled that in for me nicely! Thank you for the info!!

So I was watching the video Headache and trying to put the song and video together. Frank’s got great videos. It would be nice if he was able to put out some more in the future. Here’s my interpretation on the song/video.
He's got a headache. Lots of pain. There’s a big pill with the word “PAIN” on it. “This wrinkle in time , I can’t give it no credit. I thought about my space and it really got me down.” Not real happy with the current situation. It’s painful and he’s feeling down. “My heart is crammed in my cranium and it still knows how to pound.” Maybe he’s thinking with his heart rather than feeling it. This thinking is giving him a headache. Up to this point in the video he's in a lot of pain. Then it goes to “I was counting the trees/ Until a day when there was one/ I’d hoped beneath, asleep is where that you had been/ Well, I found you/ Maybe you can help me/ And I can help you” It shows a flower, the flower blossoming. After this point in the video, Frank’s got a big smile on his face, he flies around in the clouds for a while and then takes the chainsaw to the ‘PAIN” pill and lets out a big grin.
Any thoughts?

I think this is the story of a man who's panicked at the thought of growing old "wrinkle" while he thinks his time hasn't come yet "i cant give it no credit". And he's also getting fat "my space". So it makes him even more depressive. He's especially afraid of ending his life alone "counting the trees" but he eventually finds someone " until a day when there was one" and so he hopes this is the right one so he would no longer care about his age nor his fat. And all is well that ends well. I think.

"I found the girl who moves through the calendar of light and I wrote one of the sonnets; she soothed my aching head which had counted slowly backward the rings of trees, searching, and raced foward to the time of one tree - searching - stopping finally in the now." - Frank in the press kit for the album (that first part is actually about "Speedy Marie") This wrinkle in time, I can't give it no credit / I thought about my space and I really got me down / (got me down) / Got me so down, I got me a headache / My heart is crammed in my cranium and it still knows how to pound / I was counting rings / And I fell me into a sleep / I peeked to see if you were way back when / I was counting trees / Until a day when there was one / I'd hoped beneath, asleep is where that you had been / Well, I found you / Maybe you can help me / And I can help you

Good stuff.
Also, A Wrinkle in Time is the title of a book by Madeleine L'Engle and discusses the concept of a tesseract (or actual "wrinkling" of time as a possible mode of traveling the space/time continuum). It's a "young adult" book and very good (or at least it was when I read it in fifth grade). Anyway, I doubt it's a coincidental reference.
Also, I once heard someone say that they thought Headache was about God and his dissatisfaction with the world. Not sure what I think about that, but I may as well throw it out there. |

A book possibly more likely to have been an inspiration is Wrinkes in Time, released in 1993, written by George Smoot and Keay Davidson. The book relates the true adventures of a team of explorers engaged in the quest to understand the origins of our universe. It deals with cosmological history and scientific stuff like that.
I personally have always thought the song to be more of a love song though. The Trees and counting rings does show a concept of time and is a symbol for shelter(a basic need/security) etc. , but I have also in my mind (possibly incorrectly) married it to the old saying "Can't see the forest for the trees" but in reverse. It's like this person has had all of these relationships and people in their life (the forest) and was finally able to see the one tree(Person) that was always there. "I was counting trees until a day where there was one" to me was like he was looking back for that common denomenator...earlier he was "counting ring" and it kind of tied several symbols for the trees together. Just my $.02

Yep, especially if you read his Frankness'interviews about it :D Check my Huge A$$ list back on page 2. I have a lot of songs sort of defined and open for conjecture/discussion there. Most of those I'm pretty positive of through either just listening or reading Interviews or On-line chat transcripts with Frank. I need to update it, I have more stuff to put in...
He said something in an interview when question about the song, to the effect that, when he was younger he'd listen to the ramones on his walkman, and all his troubles would disappear. |

Getting back to Calistan for a minute:
quote: Used to be Navajo*(Used to be Native American, tho not Navajo I thought they were from the 4 sacred mountains. I think He used Navajo cause it rhymed)
Wouldn't be the first time! Maybe this is a dumb question, but is there any reason why, in this song, he pronounces the word "nava-joe," rather than "nava-ho"?
quote: I play some pachinko I play pachisi *(Japanese Casio games, though pachisi has believed Mexican origins)
Isn't it Indian? Parcheesi game boxes often identify it as "The Royal Game of India."
quote: 'Out of the pan' has always confused me. California has no pan handle...maybe his friend is from a place with a panhandle? Or the in to Japan, could mean he leaves an area known as the Pan and goes in to Little Tokyo or a Japanese burb or area of LA to do his Kareoke-ing?
Or maybe it's just a play on "out of the frying pan and into the fire."
As for Crackity Jones, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's about one of Frank's old roommates, as is Tony's Theme. Different roommates, though.

Perhaps this has been posted here already, but I beleive I read an interview with Frank wherein he described the name of "Calistan" as being a cross between California and eastern European/Russian states that end in 'stan'. Meaning that a future California would be a more desolate place with civil and politcal unrest. I thoroughly enjoyed the breakdown of the song, I never thought of the "Juan Wayne" part in that way. I can definately give that some credit. CREDIIIIT!!!! |

really enjoy your 2 cents. i like your point that this one tree (person) was always there. in the video, frank points to a map and there are two marks real close together. when my wife and i watched the video together we went it's just like us! we lived right around the corner from each other for about 15 years before we started dating. the great thing about music is that it can have different meanings for many people.
but i also think it's more of a love song. i wonder if it means anything that headache is right after speedy marie. |

1) I think because it rhymed the way he wanted it to, or possibly he is illuding to Euro-settlers improperly pronouncing a Mexicain J. I think it was convenient. But with out being Frank I dunno and those are the only two things I could think of. 2) Different games I believe. Pachisi not Parcheesi. Pachisi is a casino game.

See, the thing w/ Enders Game & Vanishing Spies is that in Enders game, Ender (who is a Third child, very inflamatory in their world) is playing a video game which is being monitored by gov't spies. He defeats the giant, (in the game) which no one else ever done, by gouging out it's eyes. The spies get very excited about this, and trick Ender into ... well, i won't give it away. It's a good read. |

I seriously doubt that Frank goes back to his days in the pixies and writes songs about them. It just doesn't seem to be his style at all, but I hear lots of people say it all the time. Like "I'll be Blue", of course it could sound like he is looking back to his first band, but only to someone who wants the song to be about that. I personally think that it would be lame to write a song about something like that, espeicially if I was as musically inclined as Frank Black (someday I will be, hopefully).

There are these 2 lines in The Man Who Was Too Loud (which is a whole song about himself) "do not think he does not like the cheering of the crowd he's glad that they came to see the man he used to be." I can't see any other.

mergzez- The Man Who Was Too Loud is not about Frank himself...it's about Jonathan Richman (ex-Modern Lover). "Johnny is a rich man...." --there's the give away line right there. |

maybe it's about him too, I've always thought that because it does make sense and even in the end he says "I am the man who was too loud." So maybe he wrote the song about Jonathan Richman but was also thinking about himself too |

The Planet of Sound is about an Alien looking for the Noisey Planet (Earth). He describes the planets and our moon which it stops at as it approaches Earth. Gouge Away- I believe Frank has referenced Sodom and Gomorah...I remember it was biblical, but not the actual story...but I think it was S&G. Down to the well- Sex? Bone machine is pretty obvious, it's not an over all thing, it's a few little snapshots of things. |

It is S&D...
"You stroke my locks." "Chained to the pillars / A three day party / I break the walls / and kill us all."
From what I remember in religion class, Samson had superhuman strength...and long hair (not abnormally long), and that hair was the source of his strength. I don't remember why they wanted him captured or whatever, but Delilah seduced him, and while he was sleeping, cut off his hair. He was then weakened and chained to the pillars of some building or other during some sort of party...somehow he got his strength and pulled the pillars down and killed everyone...something like that. |

Does anyone have a clue about this "beta" thing in Los Angeles ("Dancing the beta can can" and "he got a betatron")?

I always thought it may deal with betamax. Sounds silly, I know. Either the 'good man'was a journalist (news companies here in the states stuck with the beta format for a long time after the consumer market deemed it crap) or its maybe trying to show the trendy-ness of the USA LA. Some people bought beta over VHS in the beginning and were stuck with a product they couldn' do anything with. But outside of a betamax metaphor of somekind I have never been able to come up with anything. Beta just means 'second' to my knowledge and cancan is a womans high kicking dance if the word is literal. A betatron is an accelerator in which electrons are propelled by the inductive action of a rapidly varying magnetic field. I think alot of colleges/universities have them. Maube there is a famous one in one of the LA's. So ... I'm probably just as confused as you in all actuality. By that is my deranged minds .02 |
