We'd all be filthy rich. $56.50 for 2 tix to the Mar 29th. show. ($20ea. face value). Still, for going to an out of town show, we have little choice. I suppose it's better than roadtripping only to arrive at a sold out show.

56 for 2 isnt that bad. I've payed wayyy more. 95 for Ozzy Osbourne and 75 for The Tragically Hip. Both shows were worth every penny in my opinion |

I think the main problem I have is the ratio of surcharges to actual ticket price. $8.25 on a $20 ticket is 41%! There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Fortunately, some clubs have made tickets available privately online. Like the El Rey (in LA), for instance. Three years ago, their policy was that you could only buy through Ticketmaster until the day of the show. They changed that-- now you can buy from their web site and get the ticket at Will Call for a fee of $2.50. I'm convinced they changed this policy because people complained. But if you want to continue shelling out almost half the value of your ticket to TicketMaster without complaining, I suppose that's your right. |

Exactly. Hard to see how he could come out ahead charging so low. |

how does that work exactly. does frank get a percetage of ticket sales? or does he get all the ticket sales and the venue gets money from the extra stuff? i saw frank in philly for 12.50 on the DITS tour, that was the cheapest concert ive ever been to. The trocadero also used to have a will call system with NO service charge, so i literally paid 12.50, but people abused it (like they tend to do to every good thing) and now its gone and i have to pay the insane service charges. I got a ticket for Interpol and Ravonettes which cost 14 dollars from ticketmaster, and i ended up paying 22. thats more than half. though in the end its great when bands charge less than 20, even after the service charge its worth it. the only show i ended up paying more than 20 for that ended up being worth every cent and more was wilco for 25$, weezer for 35$ no way.

It would be great to know that the band gets a slice of the surcharge pie. My inner pessimist says it all goes to the ticket vendors. |

I go to about two shows a week and, if the tickets are $20 a piece, when I see Frank next week that will be the most expensive show I've seen in the past couple of years. I can afford it. It's not a big deal. It's just a bit annoying to see admittance prices trending upward for some musicians when, in some cases, it's VERY possible for the price be lower (Frank and the Catholics don't even have a road crew - they set the stage up themselves - and the ticket price is STILL high).
Fer mdisanto: The situation varies, but often the venue will guarantee a certain amount of money for the show + a percentage of the door (tickets).
I don't live in one of the bigger cities where sell outs are common so, most of the time, I just pay at the door. I don't deal with ticketmaster. |

Some of the other venues that I noticed were charging $12.00 to $15.00 per ticket. I hope he is touring more and swings a little closer to the KC area.

TICKETMASTER IS EVIL. That's all there is to it. I got my ($15) Frank Black ticket at the door instead of dealing with them.
I only deal w/ TM when I fear a show will sell out... and when it's been a long time since I last dealt w/ them, so I sorta forget what money-grubbing bastards they are. I broke down and used 'em to buy my ticket to the Robyn Hitchcock show a coupla weeks ago and they charged me a bazillion dollar service charge, as usual. GRRRR. Luckily, Robyn Hitchcock is TOTALLY worth it, or I'd be a lot angrier. But avoid 'em when you can, I say, for they are hellspawn. |

I don't go to many shows at all. Maybe five or six a year. Normally, I pay a lot more than $20. I really don't see how he makes that much money off of $20 tickets. Surely, he probably sees no more than $10 of that. Most of his shows are in smaller venues with about 200 - 300 people. By the time he pays the musicians, food and lodging, and any other various touring costs, he's not seeing big bucks. Whatever cash he sees from the tour, he must have to spend a great deal on production costs for future recordings.
Maybe I'm totally wrong. Maybe he's rolling around on the floor covered in cash. But I like his work ethic: lots of touring, doing his own roadie work, and putting out recordings consistantly. Talent-wise, he deserves to be bringing home Brittany Spears-type money. So I'll gladly fork over the extra dough for a guy who puts on one of the longer, more entertaining shows in the business. |

I spent over $60 to see Elvis Costello last year in Dallas and it was the best concert of the year. You could tell Elvis was out there earning every penny of it since the show lasted 2 1/2 hours, I literally ran out of songs to hope he would play, he played them all and rocked SOOOOOOOO hard.
So, I went into the show bitching about the price but left thinking it was the best money i had spent in a long time. |

I thought this thread was about of amount of money that Ticketmaster gets, not the price of shows in general. |

I think everyone has paid over $50 for *some* kind of concert at *some* point, especially if you're going to see ozzy osbourne or whomever. but the whole point is that ozzy is commercialized, and frank black isn't. not that commercialization is necessarily a bad thing, but a frank black show should be for the fans and about the music while an ozzy show is probably about that plus making money for this person and that. i'd rather pay $200 to see frank black than $20 to see ozzy, but c'est la vie. also, you pay for demand. a lot more people know who ozzy is and therefore a lot more people are willing to pay the $95 to see him. you can't forget that. |

Right on BLT.. If I really want to go to a show, I'll go regardless of cost. Get tickets directly from the venue whenever possible to avoid paying more than face value. What bothers me is that the artist(s) probably don't see a cent of all those extra fees. Ticketmaster is just a parasite, it's existance is solely based on the American quest for convienence at all costs..... |
