A Genius...? I wouldn't go that far. Frank is a guy who happens to pour his emotions into his song writing and performances. He is a regular overweight balding guy like my Uncle Ritchie. Would I go to every show in my area, hell yes. Would I wait to have him sign an autograph? Nahh.
Its all perspective baby

Of friggin' course the man is a genius. And most of us are all fairly imperfect (retards), whether we admit or not.

Settle down son. First of all, don't take it as a personal attack if I don't agree with your definition of "genius". I reserve that title to the Einsteins and the Jonas Salks of the world. I would use the word "talent" when describing a musician or any artist for that matter.
When I was younger, I too thought Musicians were "geniuses". Once you live a little bit, things are put into perspective.
As to your mention of "retards", I'll leave that one alone. Please speak for yourself on this matter.

I saw David Bowie (arguably one of the all-time best, most original musicians) on Carson Daily (arguably one of the lamest people ever) and he was asked about current music. He stated that he was mad at Americans for shunning one of the greatest bands of all time, the Pixies. He said that Charles was a genius. Then, for his performance, he did his cover of Cactus, which is totally amazing if you haven't heard it (where FB shouts P-I-X-I-E-S, Bowie shouts D-A-V-I-D). So, if David Bowie thinks Frank a genius, then who cares what millions of lemmings think of their favorite corporate product! GENIUS!

I agree fully, though my previous post would indicate otherwise (I failed to read page 2 before offering my post). In the context of music, I think FB is a genius. My brother recently referred to Chuck Palhaniuk (sp?) as a genius, which made me think about mathematicians who work out proofs for the quadratic formula or physicists who conjure up mind bending theories that take years of advanced math courses and a very open mind to understand. I then thought it silly that he could label a fiction writer genius (note: Chuck is one of my current favorites). But for the convenience of contrasting FB to other musicians, genius is a relative term, with perhaps jellyfish representing the bottom end of the scale. |

I disagree that the only geniuses are guys who get good SATs scores, work out complex math problems, and things like that. Certainly, some of those people are geniuses, but I believe genius can be applied to art too. I mean, you're creating something out of nothing that many people relate to so much as to cause extreme devotion...that's something not many people with 1600 SAT scores have done. |

I'd say Frank is a genius. Everytime my music tastes cycle back to Frank, his new crop of cuts are simpily new and jaw dropping.

genius = is born here and uses emotional intensity to do something that changes the world, be it in math, art, science, whatever. charles' music has already tilted the axis of the music world through the pixies, yet he won't sit on his laurels and he keeps on showing his genius through his solo work because he definitely fuckin' loves it (there's that emotional intensity).
maybe he isn't a genius himself (all humans have their imperfections), but he sure as hell has a powerful genius in him. |

I played the Sax. Then one night tripping off my skull my friend chucked on Los Angeles on his kick ass car stereo. At that point my life changed. I went out and bought Pisolero and all the pixies cd's and then accumulated the rest. Whats worse I picked up the guitar, and I havent put it down since. My poor sax. That big boned bastard changed my life. My friends call me "Josh Black" and I cant help breaking into song at work. My fingers have callouses and I cant chuck a shit on the dunny without taking my guitar and bustin out a rendition of "space is gonna do me good" or "I Could Stay Here Forever" or "White Noise Maker" (hehe) I even though about overeating....
Definitely a genius - if not - then rewrite the criteria |

I'll say he's a genius 'cause I got a band and I know it's hard to remember the lyrics of the song even our own ! David Bowie said during an interview that he LEARNT something like 30 songs of his own for his last tour and he said that Bob Dylan could learn more than 100 ! the FB are even more hard-written than Dylan's his songs ain't 60's pop songs ('I'm gonna love you till the day I die' style) they are full of long and hard-to-sing verses and I don't talk about the thousands chorus he play in each of them so respect to FB but to the Catholics too who GOTTA remember all the fucking crazy bridges and chords I remember a gig in France when Dave made a mistake on I'll Be Blue 'cause his repertoire his huge and this song was new to him
sorry for mistakes but I'm french
you got the flavor |

I'd say that the music Mr. Black creates is ingenius, but he is just Frank Black, the regular guy. I myself sometimes find it hard to imagine that he does ordinary things like you or me, but that's the way it is. He's on no higher level, but he has somehow developed an incredable way of creating music. So I guess the ratio between genius and regular joe is about half and half (ok, maybe tilting a little more toward genius;-)).
