Oh no. I was never ever going to post to a newsgroup again. Foot stuck in my mouth 1000 times.
I have had DW + BLD since they came out on mp3s... had almost altogether given up on Frank. I had turned into one of those people who listened to critics.... shame on me. The freaking internet is a critic universe. But - once you drop everything-- bam, you hear it for what it is. the albums are hard to label and tuck away. There inlies the genius! They are absolutely fresh and innovative. one on one with the moment, honest, genuine. Frank is here to take the kids again, and he deserves it!

genius kinda implies that he has these wierd side effects, but he seems more like a regular guy that writes great songs.

nah, it's a common misconception that all geniuses have to be full of demented side effects, usually they're perfectly healthy mental-wise |

Every brilliant artist has some genius in them... probably a little Sub-genius mixed in as well...

Dont say GENUIS TOO LOUD or he might take it to heart.
WHich would make him not a genius.
Alright to be honest, a lot of the songs on the albums sound lesser than others to me. Looking entirely objectively ... (as a fan i can dig them all) I think certain songs gel together so perfectly, so in the moment, that they are classic. The power of the moment is amazing. |

No demented side effects? How many references to incest does a songwriter need to make before it's considered a demented side effect? Genius. And "Guiness" also on occasion I like to think. |

Genius - and a prolific genius too. Incidentally, regarding the genius/madman thing, there is a link between genius and mental illness. The marker gene for schizophrenia was evolved when the human brain went through a period of rapid expansion and an increase in human intelligence. Schizophrenics also often have very intelligent children (Einstein's dad was a schizophrenic). Given Frank Black's level of genius, perhaps his ancestors going back 500 years were completely hat-stand.

I know there are biological links to relatives, but I meant there are non within the "genius" himself. But yeah, people with severe manic-depression often have very smart siblings and stuff like that. |

smarter people are somewhat more prone to mental illness (gifted people are, for example, i think 30% more prone to commiting suicide than people with I.Q.'s under 130) than lesser folken, but that only makes sense. the more complicated something is, the more things usually go wrong (pardon me, but i make patterns out of EVERYTHING!!)
anyway, i have to say: GENIUS!!
although, you're unlikely to get a very different response out of anyone who lingers around at a frank black-centered forum, no?

When he cures a disease or solves political strife with a song or two I will label him a genius. Why not call him a cryptically brilliant songwriting virtuoso?! Although he should receive a Nobel Prize for a couple of the songs he has allowed us to listen to.

Genius or no genius? i didn't know this was a matter of dispute! Genius obviously! Anyone who can come up with idea after idea like Frank Black does is a genius. He was writing some equally good songs when he was a teenager. It's in him, and look around you: it's not in many.

Problem with labelling someone a genuis is that there are millions of artists all labelled genuises by their fans. It doesn't make him any less great but it just takes away from the word genuis. |

maybe narrow it down more to creative genius or musical genius, we really don't know all that much more about him than what he shows us through songs and interviews. |

Well, the man did consume two cans of Guiness whilst on stage the other night, so I'll have to say "Guiness". However, his musical output thus far, its complexity, simplicity, rage, beauty, melody, cacophony, influence and homage have been nothing short of brilliant. If I could make an album like Teenager of the Year, which seems to cover every conceivable genre of guitar related music, I think I would ask to be taken to the next world as my work here would be complete. And yet this is just one album in this mans amazing catalogue. Without hesitation or hyperbole: genius.
Don not think he does not like the cheering of the crowd.... sometimes I think he doesn't. |

good question, but as a musician i rate the best songwriters in my top ten quite harshly...ie most prolific and maintains quality, ingenuity and diversity etc etc.....there are some greats in that top ten but frank black has acceded some songwriters that i have the utmost long lasting respect for.....this man must be a genius cause i cant find anyone comparable over such a time in any field.......he is no burn out and fade away, he keeps delivering, and thank god that he is realitively underground, if you are of the mind to appreciated frank black's music you will find it unknowingly, not through a chart, fad or faze. Happy Birthday Charles, you're f**kin amazing!

the man is brilliant. he has inspired SO many. nirvana only wanted to sound like pixies and then everyone ripped nirvana off too. screw the critics, they are just disgrunted people whose music career never worked out. |

Hmmmmm, musical genius, yes, except for "Jesus was Right", which I actually wrote in a Guiness induced stupor!

he's a really good musician, you can tell he is influenced by all kinds of music, he's very good at what he does, he's intelligent, his references in his lyrics and poetic sense are remarkable at times, he manages to bring in an elaborate variety of subjects and perspectives to his music (anthropology, comedy, astronomy, biology, literature, etc.). he strums the living hell outta that thing, and knows better than most how to read an audience.............i haven't heard what he got on his SATs or an IQ test.....but i think he'd be able to maintain a conversation at a wine and cheese event with astro-physicists and the like.
...and evolving from the sea, would not be too much time for me, to walk beside you in the sun.... |
