Does anyone remember the Ray Rayner show? It was a kid's show broadcast out of Chicago and used to be on WGN every morning in the 70's. So anyone with cable tv probably got the Ray Rayner show. He used to have Clutch Cargo cartoons on the show (lame) and he used to wear a hat that was half Cubs and half White Sox. Anyway, he had this game on there that was like Pong. Only instead of two lines hitting a dot back and forth, it was one line shooting dots at a moving targets. On the show, kids would call in and yell out "pow" over the phone. When a kid said "pow" some guy in the studio was supposed to push the button to hit the target. It wasn't the most high-tech game in the world, and so it was hard to win-- hard to time a telephone message with pushing the controller. Anyway, some contestents realized it was almost impossible to win, so they would just go, "pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, . . . ." real fast. Then the guy in the studio on the real game would get confused, and Ray Rayner would stop the game and tell the kid to slow down. Anyway, it always struck me as funny.
It seems like when Frank sings "Whatever Happened to Pong" he is doing an ode to that "pow, pow, pow, pow, pow" real fast thing. Chances are he's probably not even thinking of that. But he is about the same age as me, so he may have watched the Ray Rayner shows in the morning, and he could have been influenced by it. There is a chance. |
