Well, some people hear have been to MANY concerts. some have been to none. Most of us - it's been somewhere in the middle.
There's also the question of what you can call a 'concert'? If you saw your girlfriend play in the local pub does that count? what about your hubbie singing in the shower?
But the following concerts should all be uncontrovertial? La Creme de la Creme of concerts. The absoloute, no hold back, best gigs you've ever seen. Ready? here are mine:
(In... some order)
Frank Black and the Catholics: Live in the Botanique, Brussels, Belgium 8th of March 2001. I guess many people here have seen FB&TCs, but I'll put a wager that there have been very few concerts as good as that one. 34 songs, and the most ass kicking kick ass performances you've ever witnessed. Frank screamed, Frank whisphered, Frank moans and shrieked and jumped on the stage. He joked, and spoke with the crowd, he played guitar and on some songs didn't. But most importantly - they rooooooooocked!
Television, All Tommorrow's Parties Festival, Camberland England 2001. The only concert in this list I'm partial about. At times, it almost sucked. Some songs were uninteresting, the vocals didn't really live up to the album versions, and Little Johnny Jewel was only about 6 minutes long. There was also an annoying kid who kept bumping into me in an uncomfiortable manner, and had to be disposed. Oh, and I met a fan of Clinic's:-). But on other moments: the 'Swell' instrumental just knocked me off my feet. I felt like I was swept away into a whole different universe. Venus De Milo was a crowd pleaser to end all crowd pleasers, and the majestic, powerful, dominating Marquee Moon - Some bands are harder rockin', some bands are more consistent, some bands have prettier vocalists - but if you haven't seen a Television gig, you've never seen how DIVINE rock music can be.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion & Solomon Burke 31 January 2003, Royal Festival Hall, London - I came for the JSXP, but Solomon burke just stole the show. The man is HUGE, he barely manages to get up from his chair, and he has a large band with saxes and keyboards and what have you - but he simply held the crowd as no one I've ever seen. The man's Showmanship, warmth, passion - those were just unmatchable. It was truly an experience. Jon Spencer, as hard rockin' as he was, failed to match Solomon Burke - but than, he ne'er had a chance.
Lou Reed, Cinerama Hall, 4th of July 2000, Tel Aviv, Israel - I believe the Cinerama, where I saw also Nick cave and Radiohead, is no longer around. But the night will be with me forever. I've seen two other shows of the 'Ecstasy' your, and both had great highlights, but neither was as good. the crowd was perfect 0 filled with fans who were young enough to be Reed's children or grand children, but knew all the songs, old AND new (When seeing older generation Rockers like Reed of Dylan, in general, the younger folk are very familiar with songs from all of the artists periods, while the older people are familiar only with the old stuff - but there are exception to the rule). Reed gave hard renditions of his best songs, and gave us two encores of classic tunes from New York, Transformer, and Loaded. The final song, 'Dirty Blvd.' came as a surprise request from the drummer, Tony Thunder Smith, and it proved to be the grand final that epic night truely deserved.
Runer Ups: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Belgium, June 2001: very fine concerts, with great songs and a cool version of 'The Curse of Milhaven', including introducing the musicians. Also the Bob Dylan gigs, especially the Paris 2002 show, and all the other Frank Black and Lou Reed concerts I've seen. Plus the Breeders rule, and I did my first and so far only 'crowd surfing' there, and Kim Deal is really, really hot!

My top three; Liz Phair Frank and the boys (seen them three times, the last was the best) Jen Trynin (at which I cried because I was so happy to see her live)
Lastly, I saw Paul McCartney on his last tour, which is a little cheesy but it was great because I was with my mother and she LOVES him so I was thrilled for her. Also, we were in the 18th row and that was pretty cool - just to be like "hey, there's a Beatle!"

I never thought I was going to be impressed by Andrew W.K., but I have to give the guy a fuck load of credit because he was so entertaining and rocked my tits off? And then there was Will Oldam, who was just beautiful, The Mother Earth Temple from Japan also blew my mind along with God Speed You Black Emperor for the whole sonic trip and then I saw Frank awhile back and I still dont believe I actually saw him, like I dreamt it or something!?

I think the most rockin concert I've ever attended was the Foo Fighters in 2000 (I think...or 99). I'm not a huge Foos fan, but they fucking rock and take no prisoners...Dave Grohl is excellent. Runners up would be FB&TC 9:30 Club 2000, Sonic Youth at the Troc and Royal Oak Theatre (Troc was better). |

Frank Black in '99 - Awesome. Saw him again in 2001, and he was in excellent form, but in '99. Man. It was just pure, unbridled rock and roll energy.
Joe Jackson in '00 - What an entertainer.
Chubby Checkers and the Wildcats in '01 - Had a great time. A couple of friends and I got on stage and danced with Mr. Checkers.

I'd say the best concert I've ever seen was Silverchair with openers Lit and Grinspoon at the Vic Theater in Chicago. It's a pretty small place so you get to be a lot closer to the band. I hate being so far away at concerts that the band looks like tiny grains of rice on the stage. |

Pixies, Nov. 1991, Miami, FL. My first and best concert, for obvious reasons.
Many FB shows, particularly his show in 1999 in Gainesville, FL.
GBV, 2001, Sapphire Supper Club, Orlando. Wasn't a big fan of the band; I still don't listen to them often, really, but this concert blew me away. Spectacular.

Black Francis solo - McCabes Guitar Shop, Santa Monica 1991.. (joined by Joey half way through the set) - this will probably always stand out as the best show i've ever seen.. it was so bizarre to be SITTING DOWN (they've got about 100 or so steel folding chairs they set up in rows) and watching him scream his lungs out..
runners up:
(any of the other MANY times i've seen Frankie and his cronies)..
Beulah at the Troubadour, 2001 Belle and Sebastian, Coachella, 2001 Beck at the Catalyst, Santa Cruz, 1993 Nirvana at Hollywood Paladium (opening for Dinosaur Jr), 1991.
i been meanin' to get out of Hollywood. |

Other than the FB shows that I've been to, here my favs:
Ben Kweller Violent Femmes Moby The Vandals Bad Religion The Anchor Is the End (an amazing local band--amazing)
These are really the only cool concerts that I can actually remember. He he he.
Here is my wish list of bands I'd like to see...especially if I had a time machine:
Nirvana Jethro Tull ELO PINK Floyd At least one FB show from every tour I missed That Might Be Giants Jonathan Richman Smashing Pumpkins Black Sabbath
There is obviously a lot more but I'm too lazy right now.
Jonathan Richman is awesome. |

frank black and the catholics- chicago: the metro, 2001. i stood in awe only fifteen feet away from my idol as he played the greatest rock music ever. amazing.
nerf herder- chicago: fireside bowl, 2002. this was seriously the funniest show i've ever been to. it was really amazing.
weezer- milwaukee: the rave, 2000. at the time, they had been my favorite band for 5 years, and i thought they'd never tour again. then the chords to "my name is jonas" started and i got shivers.
ash- chicago: the congress theater, 2002. i had waited 7 years to see them. it was worth it- and they were the openers!
honorable mention: toadies, superdrag, blur.

Don't you hate it when you go to show of band that you know is cool, but you don't know many of their songs yet? The show would be awesome, but you just couldn't remember most of it, cause you didn't know all the songs?
Do go front to back or back to front? |

The best concert I've seen was also my first. Primus, Pixies, and Jane's Addiction. Damn, I wish I could remember more from that show. All I remeber is Kim's chainsmokin' and constant beer drinking. Jane's Addiction, of course went the whole nine yards with an elaborate set on stage, and Primus obviously rocked like crazy. Also, someone threw a shoe at Perry, and he yells back "We are NOT a metal band!" He points to the mic stand: "This is metal, but we are not a metal band!" Primus, Pixies, and Janes Addiction. Damn, they don't make 'em like that anymore. |

Misterwoe.... I know exactly what you mean... the night before I left England I went to see the Flaming Lips. I haven't heard much of their stuff but know that they are supposed to be a pretty good band. It was a pity I didn't make much of an effort to buy some of their stuff before hand because it certainly isn't easy listening.... I would have enjoyed it a load more had I known some of the songs.

Sometimes being here in the land of commie is no fun.... my mate today has emailed me informing me that he is going to see Def Leppard at the end of this month. Not only that but Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Motorhead, Metallica and QOTSA have also confirmed that they will tour during the summer in England.
You are all probably thinking that these are crappy bands, but in an amusing sense you cannot beat a bit of 80's stadium rock... sure it ain't Frank Black, or the Pixies but for the cheese factor its pretty cool to go to a gig.
