Hey, all. New to the forum. Just thought I'd say hello and that I'll probably be popping in/posting every once in awhile.
Anyhow, my name is Justin (call me "Justin", "Just", "Guppy", whatever). I'm 21 and from southern Ohio.
Just wanted to relate to you my only story of Frank Black. :) First time and only time that I've seen him (so far) was at Little Brothers in Columbus, Ohio in March of 2001. It actually seems like it was the exact same date as his upcoming Little Brothers show that will be on the 21st of this month... and I WILL be attending. hehe
At any rate, I was relying on my older brother Donny to get us tickets before the show. He waited too long and by the time he stopped at Kroger's to buy the tickets from Ticketmaster, Frank's Columbus show was sold out. Bummer! Dismayed, but not undaunted, we decided to head up to Columbus with our wives anyhow to see if we could scalp some tickets. Little Brothers is a small setting for a concert and so I thought the chances of meeting Frank and the band were good. And I intended ORIGINALLY to bring my guitar and a good marker to see if I could get an autograph. Donny showed up in front of my house to pick us up, but when I brought the guitar out, I let him talk me out of taking it along since we "probably were'nt going to get tickets anyway" (let alone meet Frank). I brought the marker despite him (just in case) and left the guitar.
1.5 hours later, we're parked outside of Little Brothers asking people if they had any tickets. No luck. We decided to walk a bit and we passed by a Donatos pizza. I got the bright idea to go inside and ask for a cardboard box to use to make a sign. So I took the marker and wrote in big bold letters: "Worships Frank Black. Needs Tickets!" So we walked back up and stood in front of Little Brothers. Sure enough, a guy and his girl pull up and Ellicia (my wife) and I have tickets.
Since the show still had some time before it started, I waited outside with my brother, Donny, and his wife, Abby, while they scalped for tickets. I turned my gaze to the big white van with tinted windows parked in the back. In the passenger side mirror, I see a white-bald man sort of heavy-set and I froze. Dear God! It's him! hehehe And so I look over at Donny and say, "It's him. He's RIGHT. BACK. THERE." and pointed at the van. Donny, Ellicia, and I head back and sure enough, there's Frank and their lead guitarist (his name escapes me right at the moment.. I hate it when that happens). They were going over the new security settings for their van. Apparently, I later found out, they had been ripped off of most of their eq in a show just days before (maybe N.Y.... I don't remember) and they'd taken stronger measures towards theft deterrent.
Seeing us, Frank greeted us with a smile. Said something like "Hey, guys. Que pasa?" or something. I was dumbstruck. I couldn't say a word, but Donny was cool as the other side of the pillow and started up a conversation with him. My mind went back to my guitar that I didn't bring and I wanted to kick myself and Donny (slightly harder) for not bringing it. Like I said, I was at a loss and don't remember a WHOLE lot of what was said. Frank asked Donny what his favorite band was and Donny said, "Well, you guys are my second favorite." Frank asked, "Well, who's your favorite?". "The Beatles," Donny said. "Well, you know they sort-of broke up," Frank replied. There was a little more said (none by me), but Donny got his Dog in the Sand CD signed, and Frank announced that he was going to get some pizza. As he walked by me, he courteously extended his hand and I shook it and he said hello to me and asked how I was doing. I dunno if I said anything, but it was probably some indecipherable syllable that comes out when you're too stupid from awe to form words. Anyhow, he says that he's going to Donatos (yes, the same one) to get some food before the show. He starts across the lot and turns around and motions for me to come over to him. I head over at a half-jog and he tells me that they will be selling more tickets at the door. I think I managed a "Thank you" but not more... if anything.
So I run back to tell Abby (who had no idea what just happened) and I look down the street and there's my brother walking down the road next to Frank. I had to do a double-take, but sure enough... just walking down High Street with Frank Black. I found out later that not much was said, but Frank asked him if he needed something and Donny just said, "Yeah.... I'm walking down the road with Frank Black.... woah...". He trotted back to us, grinning ear to ear, explained what happend, and we all got back in line.
Anyhow, everyone got tickets and the show was, well, spectacular! I was suprised at how many Pixies songs were played. Lemme think-- Nimrod's Son, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Where is My Mind. Probably more, but I can't remember. House of Large Sizes opened up for them. They were amazing! Real good old-fashioned punk. Quite a lot like Cheap Trick in some ways. Check them out!
Well, pleased to meet you. Sorry I didn't have a better story like-- "Yeah, Frank and I hooked up and smoked a fatty in the van." Just keep in mind that the dude had/has been my idol since I first discovered his music in 1997. I'm a timid person and I could barely manage two words when I met him. *lol* Wish I'd have found him earlier in my life. His music's has a positive impact on my life.
Have a great one! ^_^

I was at that show and I remember your sign. I also got to meet him and have a good conversation that day too. It was cool. I got an autograph and he drew an alien head in my notebook.
That was a cool show as well, 3 hours, 45 songs. Must've all been in a good mood.

Wow! Small world! You weren't the guy who drove by and almost took a picture of me with the sign, were you? *l* Some dude drove through the lot beside Little Brothers really slowly with a camera in his hand aiming it at me. I wasn't sure whether they took a picture or not 'cause I didn't see a flash. hehe
And yeah! Sweet show! I had to leave a little early because my brother's wife was complaining. hehe We left just before he played Where is My Mind, I think. I'm told that I missed some great songs afterwards. |

Thanks for the setlist! ^_^ I'm glad you posted it since my friend Doug (also present in 3/01) and I were trying to remember as many of the songs that were played as we could only just yesterday. Do you happen to remember the date of that show? Was it also March 21st?

Hi,
The show was April 21st; I saw them play the night before in Cleveland which was an amazing concert.
Do you have tickets for Little Brother's? I check Ticketmaster periodically but it hasn't come up yet.
cheers

Ah! Yeah. My memory's not so good. Thanks for the reminder!
No. I don't have any tickets yet. I've not seen them for sale by Ticketmaster yet either. My friend, Doug Sharp, is planning on going up to Columbus tomorrow. I think he said that he was going to stop by Little Brothers while he was up there and see if they had tickets on sale yet. If so, he's supposed to buy a couple of extra tickets for Ellicia and I.
Anyhow, maybe see you up there this March! ^_^ I'm the goofy looking one with the big head. hehehe j/k

I understand how you couldn't really say anything to Monsieur Black with the shock of the moment, but hey! You saw a great show.
If I find out when tickets go up on Ticketmaster, I'll post it. Perhaps I'll see you at the show.
cheers |

I went to that same show at Little Brothers in Columbus. In fact, I went with the same problem as you-- trying to get tix but it was sold out and showed up anyway. In fact, I think I used the pizza box sign you discarded after you got in! It worked for me, too! Actually, I think anyone could have gotten in if they slipped the bouncer a $20. I remember how crowded and hot the show was. I helped some guys cart out a girl who fainted from the heat. But it was still a great show-- really long and full of energy! |

Interesting footnote:
I attended the January, 1990 Pixies show in Omaha, Neb. Best show I've ever seen. Better than FB 1993, 1994, 1999, or 2001. I work at a newspaper (an editor). My right-hand man attended the same concert. At the time, we lived 500 miles from each other. |

chipahoyboy. hehe. I remember you! I talked to you outside and handed you the sign once I got some tickets.
And you know what else? That girl that you helped cart out? That was my friend Doug's girlfriend at the time. Her name is Jo. Auburn hair? Sort of heavier built? I'm sure that's her. Doug's bald, large, and short-- sort of like Frank 'cept with a goatee.
Another funny thing happend with that. Doug said that he was outside with Jo after she passed out and Frank was there as well-- wearing these over-sized headphones (think the E.T. Movie -- School Bus Scene). Frank was doing these voice exercises and just kinded looked down at Jo real quick and then just went right back to what he was doing. hehehehe
That's insane. Never dreamed I'd meet anyone here that went to that show-- let alone two.
