from what i've heard of the new stuff, it's good but kind of boring. i just like the more rock and roll tracks. DITS really grew on me after a while, so i'm sure the new stuff will eventually. i'll just have to train myself to like it.

I agree, Pistolero is incredible. Not only is it a great album musically, but lyrically, it just smokes. "I Switched You", "Tiny Heart", "Such a Wire"...damn, those songs are incredible based on the lyrics alone. I think that it is Frank's most raw, abrasive album. Not a bad track on it.
But I really really have to disagree with you about the new material being boring. I will say it til I'm blue in the face....the new records are Frank's best work yet. I personally hope that he continues making records in the vein of the new ones. So much variety. Such great texture in the instrumentation. Such dead-on musicianship. I also love the raw, in your face sound accomplished via the live to 2 track recording method. How many other bands could even come close to pulling off what Frank and the Catholics do? |

Well I find Pistolero really weak. It took me a long time to face this fact, but I must admit I don't like this record. Strangely, FB & The C's has to be my fave Frank solo record, so I don't know what's happening with Pistolero, both albums are quite similar. I just feel the songs on Pistolero would've been better if recorded the same way as DiTS, with lots on istruments and all. I haven't listened to it in a long time, I should give it another try now.

Pistolero is good (Western Star is awesome) but the new stuff is better. The only Frank album I struggle with is Cult of Ray. I really like a couple of tracks, but Dance War is my least favourite Frank song. |

my only complaint with pistolero is some of the harmony singing is a little whacky and it sounds like dave i guess it is is singing the wrong note. i think you can hear it especially in tiny heart if you listen closely. but i still enjoy it a lot.

I have to agree that "Pistolero" and "FB&C" are the epitome of live of two track rock. My musical tastes span the spectrum and those two CD's flat out rock.

Pistolero kicks, no doubt about it. It's kind of disconcerting that I never see it in the record stores. The only time I ever saw one was the day I bought it. |

Pistolero was my favorite FB album for a while. It's great, not a single bad song on there. |

When i bought pistolero the day it came out, i thought lyle was gonna be playing on it, but when i bought it and saw this foreign "rich gilbert" name i was a little sad. i think the opening track "bad harmony" really got me into the album right away. The lead on that song is sweet. But some pistolero soloing is a little lacking. I feel that rich gilbert maybe hadn't quite found his groove with the catholics yet. just a theory. But, dude, "I want rock and roll", that is some nice soloing by rich.

Yeah reading these pots reminds me how much I like it, but I've never heard any problems with the harmonies as mdisanto suggests |

Pistolero is worth the price of the CD just for South Bay.. but then you've got You're Such A Wire, Billy Radcliffe, I Think I'm Starting To Lose It, and Skeleton Man..
as for Frank's most "raw".. i still think the FB&C's self-titled takes that title. that album is so fucking great! |

FB and the Catholics ... yeah that album is classic (to me at least). Lyle is fabulous on that album. I'm still a little puzzled as to why people don't like lyle workman ...

That's your opinion then.
Mine is that its bollocks to that frankly.

yeah it's all a matter of opinion. teenager of the year is probably my favorite frank black album. when people say dog in the sand is their favorite, i'm like "eh? that's crazy". but there is no point in me arguing because it's frank black we are talking about. why would i want to sway someone's opinion just about what their favorite frank black album is? now on the other hand, it's totally acceptable to give someone a frank black album to try and get them to stop listening to Creed.

Floop, youve hit the nail on the head there. The first time I heard that song I went nuts. On the whole, I think Pistolero is a bit weaker than some of his other albums, but if you want to chill out, have a few beers, and turn it up loud-then Pistolero is the answer!

to be totally honest, so. bay is the first solo frank black song i had ever heard. i loved it. it was different, but it eased me into his style very well. the next songs i downloaded were tiny heart and his kingly cave. frank's country-tinged style is great, in my opinion. it also makes me appreciate the raw rock'n'roll of the first two catholics albums more.
