Something about the mix of Trompe Le Monde has always sounded kind of off to me. The vocals sound low in the mix, which I felt was odd because Trompe La Monde seems to have strived for more of a pop sound.
Using Windows Media Player I ripped “Planet of Sound” from Trompe La Monde and than ripped “Planet of Sound” from Death to the Pixies. Both registered as 2.92 MB but the chorus’s seems much more dynamic on Death to the Pixies.
I understand that Death to the Pixies was remastered. Either that master was really good or my CD is slightly messed up. The mix just sounds awful to me. I have pretty good ears and all but is this normal? I read a post a while ago saying there was supposed to be a remixed version of the album on the net, is it possible it was just a bad pressing of the CD?
well im not sure about the mix but i dont think if your cd was messed up it would work but just reduce the vocals, i mean i dont see how a cd could be damaged in such a way to consistantly change the properties of the audio. maybe they are too low for your taste, or maybe you have some wierd EQ setting on your player. i konw when i listen to stuff with my computer speakers, if i put like the simulated surround all the way up it lowers the vocals significantly.
I love the album. But I owned Death to the Pixies first and I noticed this difference. I thought maybe there was a bad pressing of the CD. I suppose it was just the remastering on Death to the Pixies that livened up the recording. :)
It's probably compression and a little EQ that is making the difference. The original is over compressed making everything muddy, the remaster has apparently fixed some of that letting some of the dynamics out. They also probably EQ'd some brightness in which also helps the vocal pop out. I personally like the original fine. I think you can hear the vocals enough and it makes the guitars seem even louder
