Anyone heard this yet? What's that you say, it's not available until Mar 18th?

Well then, make sure you don't check out alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.indie.

Sounds pretty good so far..seems a little more tame than the ST album so far on first listen...glad to see 1% of One on there..catchy song...tho i think i almost like the bootleg better..that's on one listen. Very long version tho at 9mins..!

Only time will tell how this record stands in comparison with his others, but so far, my feelings are divided---and this after several listens. I recall reading somewhere that SM consciously sought to distance himself from the tongue-in-cheek jokiness that infused his first record, and this he accomplished, maybe too well. My point is, it's a SERIOUS album, and less "fun" than his first solo record and definitely anything that Pavement put out. It's also more sophisticated and less poppy; many of the songs are meandering and oblique and reference many classic rock styles. Much of the record reminds me---God forbid!---of Pink Floyd, of all bands, in both sound and guitar styling. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the title---"Pig Lib"--- is an allusion of sorts to Pink Floyd. I'm almost sure that this album, while more consistent than the first solo outing, won't win him any new fans, and will probably confound existing ones. It's a shame. There's some very good stuff on there, but it sounds the least Malkmus-like of all of Malkmus' work, if that makes sense. Even more baffling, he left off some of the best new songs he's been playing recently on tour, including my favorite, Dynamic Calories.

Oh, and by the way: I heard SM badmouthing Frank Black on Spin.com in a video interview when his first solo record came out; something about not wanting to go in the wrong direction and languish in obscurity like FB. What a prick, I thought. Hearing him talk about FB this way gave me conflicting feelings, since FB and SM are both my favorite artists (well, SM is a close SECOND). Consequently, I don't believe the first record did well sales wise, and I know DOg in the Sand consistently beat SM's eponymous solo record on the college charts and Amazon sales. It'll be interesting to see how SM's solo career shapes up, since I think he and FB are following a similar trajectory, both having carried epoch-defining bands on their shoulders until disbanding them in favor of solo careers. How does Malk's second solo record compare with Teenager of the Year? No comparison; TOTY wins hands down.

SM has produced decent stuff, but its very patchy in my opinion.... and as for having a go at Frank Black, what a jumped up prick!

I just found this while reading an interview with mclusky (sound like early Pixies very good):
Speaking of the multitasking rock-star, if you all had your own side projects, what would they sound like?

JON: Um, like my current side project. A bit like the Violent Femmes...

ANDY: Mine would sound more like Frank Black --- but Black Frances- Frank Black… before he started sucking.

Ouch.

I've listened to SM&TJ about 10 times now...it's just not grabbing me. I certainly don't 'dislike' it, but it does seem pretty lackluster... 1% and whatever song has 'Don't Feed The Oysters' are pretty catchy..the rest kinda fades from memory...sad...

In response to these musical geniuses' Frank Black slander: nobody owns the pleasure of tones that belong to a guy with no ear.

No one should slag others off. From what I recall the first 3 FB albums all made the top 40 and FBTC made the top 70 (UK), there is a high chance Malkmus will slide into obscurity eventually (if hes not already)

I haven't lost faith in Malkmus tho.

I like the new SM&TJ. Sounds like the Grateful Dead.
Especially the track called "Us". These artists are
always slagging each other. They all do it. Everyone
does it. Like back in high school, uh who's better
dude Led Zeppelin or The Who? I don't know but
EL&P suck!!!

English slang is so much better than American, I wish I could say "slagging" and get away with it. That and "taking the piss"
