I'll never thank FB enough for making me discover these great bands.
I bought Pet Sounds and became a Beach Boys fan with Hang On To Your Ego.
I started the Ramones because of 'Ramona Sing
He did a cover of This is Where I Belong (Kinks)

I've got to try now Modern Lovers and Jonathan Richman, Dough Sam, and what else? Otis Blackwell?

Try Roxy Music (Frank covered Re-make/Re-model). I can't remember all the bands I've discovered through Frank... RM, Hüsker Dü, Mike Watt, the Ramones...

This leads on neatly to best/favourite Frank/Pixies covers on CD or live. Head On, Winterlong, I've been waiting for you, I can't forget, Changing of the guard, Six sixty six, Sister Isabel, Sleep etc etc. My personal favourite is John the Revelator, and it was great to hear Dirty Old Town as well. Any other choices? And anyone else dislike his version of Hang on to your ego?

its nice to see FB pay homage to his heroes, just as other artists pay homage to him. anyone who hasnt heard the really excellent john peel sessions that frank did with teenage fanclub a few years back should pick it up. its fantastic - there are lovely covers of handyman (i think del shannon) and sister isabel (as on Sunny Sunday..). its a really excellent cd and it also has the brilliant jaques tati and an alternative version of the man who was too loud. supoib. would love to know what FBs fave tom waits album is.. my guess is probably bone machine but i could be way off!
cheers
Barry

Been thinking about this one a bit and it seems to fit in the category of homage and covers - framing BLD with Black Rider is a huge compliment to Waits but I think there might be a second less obvious one in doing two covers. Waits likes to do different versions of some of his songs. On Franks Wild Years he covers himself on both 'Innocent When You Dream' and 'Straight to the Top'. IWYD has a barroom version , STTT a vegas take and FB's smarmy lounge version of 'Black Rider' fits the idea - if you just streccchhhh it a bit.

A second thought, Waits loves to do little character studies, though I have to fight of the impules to shower after listening to him (thats a compliment :) and most BLD's songs are studies of the effect on different types of men who have lost control, often from losing a woman. From the lovable mediocrity of the everyman of "Chip Away Boy" to the frightening character of "Cold Heart of Stone" and just about everything in between.

Which leads to my last point because I know Im running on here - I dont believe FB (sorry Frank) when he says they just happen to have two good takes of 'Black Rider' and thats why they are there. Frank is one of our most cerebral writers and I think he took inspiration from Waits, sponged off the slime and pathos and overt emotions and wrote these precise little rock poems.

Bazza, I agree -the Peel Sessions CD is great. (The Del Shannon song is Sister ISabel, Handyman is by Otis Blackwell (?and Jimmy Jones?).) He was interviewed on Radio Scotland early in the morning after recording the session the night before with Teenage Fanclub. Poor Frank was knackered - he could hardly speak. Luckily he had his acoustic with him and played Headache and Calistan. I doubt he will remember the interview fondly

PS Frank would go fo Rain Dogs!

but Handyman was sung by Del Shannon, although you're right, it's a Blackwell/Jones composition

Hey, from one Beach Boys fan to another, welcome to the club :) "Pet Sounds" is the greatest album ever recorded. No contest.

Today! / Summer Days is beautiful...Have you heard any of the unreleased SMiLE album? That stuff is about as gold as Pet Sounds. Surf's Up (the original) is one of the greatest songs ever. Beautiful song...simply amazing. The re-recording features vocals in the first half by Carl, while the original is Brian. The second half (Dove nested towers...) is the same. The ending is amazing...sends shivvers up my spine every time. The early Beach Boys is kinda cheesy, but there are some great songs in there, and you can't knock it for the sheer quality of the vocals/harmonies.

surftones - did anyone else here think that the opening song in pulp fiction sounds incredibly similar to the surftones' version of cecilia ann?

what's the cult of ray all about? there was an interview around '95 -frank got asked what books he was currently reading, he mentioned kim stanley robinson and ray bradbury... so i kind of presumed ray bradbury was probably the ray of "cult of ray"... anyway my point is that i read a few of bradbury's works like "a graveyard for lunatics" and a few others i forget the titles, 2 of them were all about venice, ca and movies and murderers, lots of suspence... his earlier stuff is more famous like fahrenheit 451 (?) i used to know the exact number which won me a game of trivial pursuit once - i think it's the temperature at which something starts to burn but i can't remember what)... but my eventual point is that i discovered ray bradbury - arguably a great author - through frank. i haven't tried bob zubrin yet

There are few finer rock and roll records than Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall of the British Empire and Village Green Preservation Society.

Frankly, you're a soul that's incomplete without both records, in my humble opinion.

Cult of Ray is a reference to Ray Bradbury, yes. And it is Fahrenheit 451. I read it as a freshman in high school and it was confusing as hell...I think I'd enjoy it more now.

Fahrenheit 451 - is it not the temperature paper burns at - the society has banned books? It's a good film as well (Truffaut), Im sure the French Frank fans will agree!

the "opening song" in pulp fiction is "miserlou" by dick dale - its quite possibly the best know surg song of all time. its similiarites to cecillia ann lie in the fact that much of the early 60s surf music has a very distinct sound/vibe to it. both are cool songs. for a modern surf rock band check out pittsburgh's the hi-frequencies (www.hifrequencies.com), they rule (and they might have a song on my label's comp...)

"Handy Man" is one of those songs that was a "hit" (I guess it was a hit) with more than one performer. Other than the Frank version I have "Handy Man" performed by Jimmy Jones on a 50s compilation CD.

If you like VU, you GOTTA have White Light, White Heat. It's *EXCELLENT*. And Rolling Stone (not that their opinion matters) named it the #1 Coolest album of all time.
