Does Frank do the vocals at the same time as the music is recorded?

hmmm...
let's think about this.
what part of LIVE do you not understand? it wouldn't be very LIVE if he didn't record the vocals at the same time.

well hes probably asking becuase, atleast in my experience its pretty hard to record it all live, so ive recorded the band playing the music live and then overdubbed vocals. without isolation (which we didnt have) the vocal mics picked up all the other stuff and it became a big problem. not a crazy question i guess.

Default,

So, great intro to the forum. You instantly want to be regarded as a smart ass.

I realize that there was a possibility that the vocals were recorded at the same time. As that is the case, I am even more amazed at the Catholics ability and the failure of the mainstream music press to, as they said back in the day, "recognize".

I know about recording. I have been in plenty of sessions and have done vocals but have never done it the way that FB&TC do it. I just find it very very cool, that they can get it to sound as good as it does, Frank can play and give such amazing vocal performances all at the same time.

That's what led me to wonder if the vocals weren't done on top to get a more controlled environment.

How do you think they get it seperated so well? What do they use to eliminate bleed into the vocal mic?

If anyone wants to shed more light on that aspect of it...I want to know.

If you want to be a smart ass, don't post. Or at least, have some more posts under your belt and identify yourself as a smart ass. Then you won't look like such a dumb ass, Default.

Good one, BLT. Picking noises are very audible in places on Pistolero, I've noticed.

Frank is probably in his own isolation booth. Actually, every amp or live instrument is probably in it's own room because drum bleed is the biggest problem. As for bleed from Frank's guitar to his vocal mic, you can hear some. His guitar often has a high frequency pick-scrapping sound to it that comes from bleeding into his vocal mic. Of course if he's playing electric it's not a big deal, otherwise you just work around it or you try to use a microphone that has a very short range and angle it up slightly, away from the guitar and have Frank sing up close to it. I noticed on Dog in the Sand when he lists the musicians for each song, that Frank doesn't play guitar on I'll Be Blue and If It Takes All Night. I think it's probably because those songs are harder to sing and he wanted to be able to concentrate more. There are probably more live to 2 songs he doesn't play guitar on, does anyone know?

swimmer,

face it. you asked a stupid question. luckily you had me to point out the fact that you have down syndrome so that you were forced to rephrase the question and people could actually understand what you were trying to ask.

no worries.

Anyone who actually has Down syndrome is obviously deserving of public flogging as well as this type of verbal propaganda.

my apologies to all in the forum. the name calling was a response to the swimmer's challenge to become the board's smart ass. i'm sure you've all read his "I have Down Syndrome" thread, so he was the first to be so damn insensitve.

the swimmer is better described as jackass. he asks stupid question that he already knows the answer to, then gets all riled up when when people shit on him.

zuh? change your name? is he suggesting that default is me?

no way, d00d. i'm way more creative than that. w3rd.

ps-

i wonder what it would sound like if someone tried to record it that way? for instance:

w nt r bl ws thr gh m c t t's ch ll ng m b n s b t t d s n t c mp r t r c ld h rt f st n
 i e o ou y oa i i i y o e u i oe o o a e o you o ea o o e

hahah... you'd have to record it the right way, then try to just make the vowel and constant sounds separately. i bet if you got it pretty close it would sound bizarre. like where TMBG recorded vocals backwards but they were saying the stuff backwards too so it came out 'right' but it sounded fucked up.

well, on their first album, TMBG did a fake-talking-backwards-thingy on 'Hide Away Folk Family' but it wasn't what i'm describing, they just tried to sing like they were talking backwards.

i think, and i could be remembering wrong because my brain is not working that well today, they did what i described on 'Subliminal' off 'John Henry', which came out in '94. so unless radiohead did it on 'Pablo Honey', TMBG did it first.

(edit: now that i think about it might have been a song on apollo 18, i'm not sure now. :P )

It was Apollo 18, the song was Dinnerbell.

"Subliminal" has a backwards section at the end, but it's just the previous part of the song reversed. Apollo 18 came out in 1992.

yeah i know the last couple seconds of subliminal are the previous few seconds reversed. i think that there's a backing vocal that's reverse-reversed, though.

well i tried looking it up and i can't find the blurb that i originally read. anyway, it's probably the part swimmer's referring to.

true story.

EbbV has been quite hilarious lately. Ebb, are you in love or something?

On TMBG: I heard this radio interview in which John F. sings "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by request, and he basically sings the verses in the backwards voice cause he doesn't know the words. It's pretty funny and good cause John L. plays the chords on his accordian.

Ebb's post here reminded me of how I also dig on "32 Footsteps" how they do the consonants "bing bang bing-along, cing cang cing-along, ding dang ding-along d . . . " I can't believe I never noticed on my own--my wife pointed it out.

Damn, TMBG is good. It's kinda funny how many people liked TMBG before Frank even "discovered" 'em. It's kinda strange to think that Frank heard Flood and was totally blown away. Just didn't fit my impression of Frank's M.O. with music appreciation. Perhaps it fits under melodic and lyrical coolness, which TMBG has in oodles.

If the Radiohead thing you're referring to is on "Everything in it's right place", that's actually just backwards reverb. You flip the tape (or audio file) so it plays backwards and then record a reverb track. When you play everything forwards again, the reverb creeps in before the vocal making it sound really eerie.

I heard that TMBG did a song backwards live at the hatch shell in Boston and it sounded really convincing.

I did hear them do a live fade out of a song when they played Central Park about 10 years ago. They did covers of White Rabbit and Edgar Winter's Frankenstein. Pere Ubu and NRBQ opened for them. I always laugh when people mosh to "Birdhouse in Your Soul"

Yeah, I've heard that. I also have a recording of him doing something similar with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Speaking of TMBG and backwards singing, one of their songs, "On Earth My Nina," came about when Linnell played the unreleased song "Thunderbird" backwards, and then sang what the backwards vocals sounded like to him.

I think Einsturzende Neubauten do this backwards singing thing, but I couldn't tell on which song. It has to be before TMBG though.

I think some guys just can't handle being called out on this board. Once again it appears that the number of posts somehow equates to a higher IQ or translates to someone's "Internet Toughneess".

First and foremeost...did anyone ever see the TV show in the early 90's with the down syndrome kid "Corky"? Well I recall watching it religiously as I consumed ecstacy and it was a good show. Anyway, getting back to my point, "Corky" aka:the swimmer had his ass handed to him on this post and then launched into a profanity laiden tirade in which he questioned the "Manhood" of Default. C'mon...is the number of posts on this board now some sort of new steroid? Is "Corky" now some kind of Bad-Ass? I think not..quite the contrary.

I often wonder how many message baord "badasses" actually ever meet up and "throw them bones". I can see "Corky meeting up with Default and being one of those guys who bows up and then just stands there and says.."Hey man try and hit me..I dare ya...I kill you man...c'mon pussy!" Afterall, he has done that a thousand times in front of his mirror..hasn't he?

I firmly believe the anger eleicited out of "Corky" was masking a certain amount of embarrassment..afterall..who with so many posts would be so inept as to ask that stupid of a question?

So, in closing...i see Default as the winner and by his actions.."Corky" as the loser. In teh future "Corky" try and take shit like that in stride stud. And...I'll send you my address if you would like to come to Atlanta and pummel me too.

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father..prepare to die!""

"I'll have the cheese and eggs, scrambled, with plain toast, grits, bacon and hashbrowns scattered and covered."
