AFTER THE GOLDRUSH is probably my favorite.. i think it's a pretty epic album from beginning to end.. and you can sort of get a Black Letter Days vibe off it if you listen carefully.
RUST NEVER SLEEPS (live) is another essential one. if you want some individual songs, check out "good to see you" .. "sugar mountain" .. "heart of gold" for starters..
i occasionally eat chateaubriand. |

Really, you can't go wrong if you just buy (or download....muwhahahah) the "DECADE" double cd (triple album).
It's the compilation of 60's 70's period Neil Young and I venture to say that every single song on it, and there are a lot, is beautiful and great.
Yes, he's done cool stuff past that and is still doing good, but if you want THEE best stuff to get started on, that's the ticket, charlie.

Neil Young rocks you know godfather of grunge and all that shit which came out a couple years back to kick start his career again...
But for real he has a wicked guitar sound... saw him live a few years ago. He does the sound track for the movie Dead Man (great film) and some of that sounds really neat but, I don't have that album... but what he plays in the opening credits is one of the coolest sounding thing I have ever heard one man do on a guitar.
Would recommend Decade to start and then go from there... he did an album with Pearl Jam as his backing band (Mirror Ball) and it was quite good. Havest Moon is a great mildly rocking album... at the end of the day he is a legend so you can't go wrong... Neil's come full circle from folk to rock to doo woop.
Just pick something on sale up and you'll be laughing

Neil got me rockin' at age 8 with Trans..loved him ever since. =)
My fav. album is Freedom tho... Rockin' in the Free World got overplayed of course, but i really love most of the numbers on there..
Live Rust, After the Goldrush, Comes a Time and Decade are also quite great.
I've been disappointed with some of his more recent stuff. The newest album really blows, imo, and i never much liked Mirror Ball much.. |

I got into listening to NY when my mate recorded me Mirror Ball and Harvest on md. Since then Ive recorded After the Goldrush, bought Sleeps with Angels, Mystery Train, Broken Arrow, Unplugged. I find that Neil Young is difficult to get into and required patience..... a bit like some of Franks work.
Ive not got decade, I'll have to scour the hutons of Beijing to find that one... |

He's got about a million live albums, and none of them are particularly bad, but Live Rust is absolutley fucking genius. I mean, really, a live album has never stood out to me, EVER, except Live Rust. Just genius shit.

I concur, Decade is the way to go. You even get Mr. Young's version of the Pixies' Winterlong.

HARVEST has the 1975 no 1 heart of gold on it (which i believe was recently covered by some band i look down upon, can't remember which one though), quite a few more i like, old man for example, otherwise TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT is definitely worth a listen

There may be no 'I' in team, but there's a 'ME' if you look hard enough. |

Here's another vote to start out with DECADE. I had disc 2 in my cd player for a month once. Ohio, Like A Hurricane, Cortez the Killer, etc. Great stuff! matt |

I've seen that movie as well. Neil's background playing sorta reminds me of some tape recordings I made when I was 16 or 17 and first started playing the guitar. I'd turn the tape recorder on and just sorta jam for a really long time, getting off on different noises and chord variations. |

ARE YOU PASSIONATE? - anyone heard it, or did everyone judge it - based on the MOJO april 2002 review - to be not worth a buy? i haven't heard his Sep 11th song, but he generally produces the goods when he feels passionately about something. is it his weakest album?

I'd say Young is good, not great. He writes some nice songs: Cowgirl in the Sand, Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane and Oh Oh, My My (Into the Black) to name a few, but as a performer he just can't seem to stop the guitar solos. |
