This was the 5th show on the tour I had the opportunity to catch and they kicked ass. I've noticed it's always more fun to hang out on Richie Gilbert's side of the stage rather than Dave's. They did this stretch of songs including Gouge Away, Thallasocracy and I Want Rock and Roll which was unfuckingbelievable.
The only song they played that I hadn't heard on this tour was Dog in the Sand.
I missed The Bennies this time around(sorry Barto) but I did see Reid Paley and his band. I have to say if I didn't see them ever again I'd be ok with it. His negativity wears on me and I don't think he's as good as he thinks he is.
Oops- it's time to go drink!

My friends one word review of Reid was "eeew". But of course, being gals, we may have had a different POV.
But Frank was excellent. I stood on the side of the stage (they have a few steps which you can stand up on) and had a direct view of the man. He seemed much happier than the past times I have seen him, don't know if that has been the way it is on this tour, or if that was just the night. In between Reid and Dave, Frank was standing right behind my friend and I was chatting with her then glanced at him to see him looking at me and smiling. I was totally taken aback.
Anyway, the show was so amazing, I found myself just thinking "I LOVE MUSIC" through the whole thing - which is somewhat symplistic, I suppose, but it was just so good and so tight. They only did one encore (FAREWELL BEND) and I wished they came back again, but it was late and I wasn't disapointed by the show as a whole. MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN (accostic - and great, he hits all the notes) was good, I was very happy he played OUT OF STATE, JANE THE QUEEN OF LOVE, SOUTHBOUND BEVY, and the stretch of songs that Grieves mentioned was really amazing, everyone was dancing and it really got the crowd into it.
Anyway, was a truly great show - I obviously can't say enough about it. |

Wow, I'm shocked...nobody here caught The Bennies? For the last song of their set, they performed "La La Love You" live with David Lovering on vocals and his girlfriend singing Kim's part ("I love you..."). This is the only time it was ever performed live by any of the Pixies....nobody saw it...

I wasn't at the show, but that's the story I got from the guys. They were supposed to perform it with him on the Philly DC DC weekend but didn't get the time to rehearse. I really wish they would have had the smarts to have someone record it...

My brother and I saw the Northampton show and this one was much better than that night. We showed up late on purpose so we could skip the bennies, who really stunk it up two weeks ago. We got our tix and went over to Jillian's to have a drink or two before the show. While we were there I looked over and saw Frank at a booth. We left him alone and at about 10:00 he left so we followed. We ended up skipping both openers and seeing only David and FB. Frank went on about 10:45 and stopped around 12:15. Here are the songs I can remember and they are mostly out of order. The opener was Solid Gold, which was messed up and cut short in Northampton so that felt very personal to start the show with that one. Thanks guys! This was one of the best FB shows I have ever seen, it reminded me of their Teenager tour. I agree, the venue was much better this time and it was a really cool night to be in the city with everyone out of it for the holiday. Frank got visibily choked up during Cold Heart of Stone, which he acknowledged and then started his sad part "I once had a dog, who ran from his home...". And a great closer before the encore with Southbound Bevy right into Dog in the Sand. I was hoping for another ripping Bartholemew like in Noho and maybe All My Ghosts but the guys were so good that night it didn't matter at all.
Solid Gold Cactus I've Seen your Picture Robert Onion Bullet Southbound Bevy Dog in the Sand Men in Black Freedom Rock I want Rock and Roll Steak n Sabre California Bound Gouge Away Monkey Gone to Heaven Wave of Mutilation Cold Heart of Stone Nadine Manitoba Bad Day Black Letter Day Jane the Queen of Love Out of State How You Went So Far Black Rider Farewell Bend Crackity Jones Thalassocracy Whiskey in your shoes?
I probably have missed a few. |

That's flat-out bizarre. I hope someone out there got that on tape, as I'd love to hear it.
Don' t blame the band too much for not capturing it themselves, though. Virtually all of the best live onstage moments I've ever been involved in with any of my musical projects vanished into the air. Even when we all knew we were going to do something special or only once, we rarely if ever got our act together and planned to tape it. That's the same way with almost every band I know.

Right before the part of COLD HEART OF STONE about the dog, he said "now this is the really sad part" or something to that effect.
I missed The Bennies - and sadly caught that crappy Reid guy....wish they had switched their sets around. Bummah.
Also, before the show I witnessed Frank with his wife, (I am assuming it was his wife...they were hugging and such...) very cute blond woman - they seemed very happy and in love. Sweet. |

I need to find a girlfriend. I don't care if her favorite color is teal and she puts toilet paper on the roller backwards so you have to pull from the bottom- as long as she is into Frank.
Is that off-topic?

wait.. you PREFER pulling from the top? i always thought bottom was better.. it's easier to tear off without causing an accidental out-of-contril rolling.
am i alone in this theory?

I live on the edge, floop. I used to set my tp down through the bottom until I was informed by an obviously more cultured friend that it was improper to do so. I think they told me something about accessibility. Sometimes when you have it rolled through the bottom it's difficult to find where the roll starts.

Ann Landers actually solved the top / bottom TP debate in her column. She stated that pulling from the top was the correct way because that's the way the printed patterns are oriented. Maybe you boys are using the patternless, college dorm grade, fax paper brand of TP . . .
Frank Black always seems to play Boston around some holiday. Is there a reason for this? I miss him almost every tour because I go to PA for the holidays. You'd think he'd try to hit such a huge college town when the college kids would be around. Maybe he's visiting family?
Does anyone have a more detailed account of the show? I need to live vicariously!!! |

Dearest Atheist,
What do you want to know about the show? I could probably go on and on, but I am thinking you may want to know more technical guitar like questions or something, and that is not my forte.
Am happy to oblige though, if I can... Ramona |

From the Boston Herald
Black's fans get Pixie-lated
by Phillip C. Naslund Friday, November 29, 2002
Frank Black and the Catholics, at Avalon, Wednesday night.
Fans who attended the Frank Black show at Avalon on Wednesday night hoping to see their rock hero play a solid set of tunes spanning his career got what they wanted.
Fans hoping for a reunion of Black's first band - and Boston's gift to alt-rock history, the Pixies - also got a taste of what they wanted. Sort of.
Dressed in a dark suit, a healthy-looking Black sauntered on stage with his band the Catholics and opened up with a rocking version of ``Solid Gold'' anchored by the dueling guitars of Dave Philips and Rich Gilbert (who doubled on keyboards).
Black also played guitar, while David McCaffrey on bass and Scott Boutier on drums drove the band through the 90 minute-plus show. Touring in support of the simultaneously released ``Black Letter Days'' and ``Devil's Workshop'' CDs, they tore through a 29-song set that included new tunes ``Cold Heart of Stone'' and ``Black Letter Day.''
Backed by Philips and Gilbert on two pedal-steel guitars, Black played a slow, somber version of the Pixies classic ``Monkey Gone to Heaven.'' Very cool. Other Pixies songs included ``Gouge Away'' and ``Crackity Jones,'' delivered just as hard-rocking as the originals.
The crowd, while attentive, didn't really get into the show until the band started to perform material from Black's early solo career, with such anthems as ``Freedom Rock'' and ``Men in Black.'' The Pixies' ``Wave of Mutilation (U.K. Surf)'' also got a tremendous reaction from the crowd. The main set ended with a rollicking version of Tom Waits' ``The Black Rider.''
Black and company encored with a heartfelt rendition of ``The Farewell Bend'' from ``Black Letter Days,'' which he prefaced by saying, ``Hopefully, we can do this song without too much interruption from the disco next door.'' It was his only banter of the evening.
Oh, the reunion? In one of the strangest opening acts ever for a rock concert, former Pixies drummer Dave Lovering came onstage in a white lab coat and performed such science experiments as running electricity through a pickle and watching it glow because of its sodium content.
Reid Paley also performed, playing a solid set of his blues-inspired rock, mostly ignored by the crowd.

This is in reply to Ramona's "choked-up" thing. He did the same little aside before that verse in "Cold Heart" at his NYC Virgin in-store on the 12th. He also stopped mid- "Wave of Mutilation" to say "See, I was talking about El Nino way before it was this big thing. That's Frank for you. He knows we'll hang on every word until he starts the song again.

I didn't necessarily think he got choked up, (that was mrbuff, I believe) but he did seem very into the song. I love you, Frank. |

I don't want to nitpick... but he did get choked up and he did acknowledge it. As a person who lost his dog that's a favorite lyric of mine. Also, Cold Heart of Stone was not played in Northampton so I was keying in on that song. Did you notice Frank didn't play the entire acoustic hook after the first few times through the song? He skipped the "to your cold heart of stone" guitar part. This is hard to explain.
If someone gets/has a tape of the show they will notice that Frank even missed his singing mark before that part. And of course you'll hear him acknowledge the miss.
Oh well, that's all I got to say about this. I'll let you get back to wiping your butt posts. Peace and happy holidays. |

I wasn't disagreeing w/you Mr.Buff - just saying that I didn't actually SEE him get choked up and couldn't speak to that....I did notice what you are saying about the accoustic part. The main thing was he was turned away from my side of the stage at that point, and I couldn't really see his face. I did see him smile (sort of bittersweetly) when he made the comment, so I wasn't clear about the actual choking up. I believe you though!
I wish it was a week ago and I was getting ready for the show all over again...
