TV shows and the like. Just started watching The Returned (Les Revenants), a French Twin Peaksy drama series about a bunch of coach crash victims who return from the dead to their Alpine town. Neither the victims nor the townsfolk know why this has happened. The drama is played completely straight, I think that's why it's so gripping. Two episodes in so far. Denis you been watching?

I rewatched it a few months ago. I used to think it was just a bit overrated. My opinion has changed. Absolutely brilliant (and hilarious and tragic) the second time around. It makes most other TV just look so damn bad.

Finished my rewatch a few weeks ago - still an amazing show. I didn't realise there is now three series of The Deuce. I really enjoyed the first one as it was nice and gritty as you'd expect from a David Simon show but never got around to the second series. Must get onto it soon.

At the minute we're watching Legion. It's OK. It's not the genre I'll usually go for but my girlfriend wanted to watch it. The Fargo (TV) creator is behind it and it also features Aubrey Plaza so it does just about enough to satisfy me.

I also watched I'm Thinking Of Ending Things.

Here is my reaction. Feel free to follow me if any of you all are also on Letterboxd!

I'm Thinking Of Ending Things:

New Charlie Kaufman film on Netflix. Should appeal to the Lynch fans, it's weird as well. Awks everywhere.

Netflix recommended it to me after I watched The Social Dilemma (also worth a look, and quite disturbing). Basically a documentary about the power of social media on our lives, scary stuff. All the pieces of the puzzles are starting to come together, and it's starting to look like the plan is to destabilise the entire world through employing enormously complex AI algorithms to spy on us through our social media accounts and influence our behaviour. No seriously, watch this shit it's not a tin foil hat theory it's actually happening. This is how the NWO are going to take over the world.

So anyway, I spend an hour and a half being told not to click on things the internet recommends to me and then at the end the internet recommends a really good new film from Charlie Kaufman, which I could not resist because Being John Malkovic and Adaptation are classic offbeat masterpieces. The irony (I thought) as I clicked play and watched it. It's got Jesse Plemons and David Thewlis in it, who are both great actors. Thewlis is really funny.

I May Destroy You, from the UK, has a been a good watch so far, though quite challenging subject matter.

Anybody looking forward to Dune?

I liked all three of those movies.

I just watched the Watchmen HBO show. I thought it was OK. I didn't like it as much as both the original comic (obviously) and Lindelof's previous TV works. I admired aspects of it and didn't like other aspects of it. Jeremy Irons was the standout to me.

Parasite is a lot of fun, not what I was expecting.

Ad Astra is just beautiful, loved it.

The Lighthouse is a trip, good luck watching that movie. Fun, dark, creepy, horrific

Rewatching Season 5 of Orange Is The New Black. Oh no wait, my mistake it's just some videos on twitter of a bunch of folk looting malls.

The Deuce season 3. The Deuce is a great show. I was actually a background extra on seasons 2 and 3!

Also showing my girlfriend Fawlty Towers which is just the funniest show ever. I'm happy she likes it so much.

We watched Solar Opposites which I had some mixed reactions to.

Correction, it's not actually new, but it's up on youtube i think for the first time. I think it was produced in 2015.

David Lynch's new short animated film "Fire" is worth ten minutes of your life.

Decided to take the plunge with Netflix Hollywood this week. Seemed a bit mainstream, not dark and depressing enough but as it turned it it's actually very bloody good and probably going to win an emmy award.

Started The Witcher. Two episodes in and eh. I'm not really into fantasy and all the elves and silly names and gobbledygook just makes my brain shut down. But mainly the writing doesn't seem very good.

Impossible to watch without subtitles too, which is annoying. All the dialogue is them saying fictional names of people and towns and spells and stuff and we were like what the hell are they saying?? until putting the subtitles on.

Hmmm... Ozark might actualy be even better than Breaking Bad. There, I said it.

I've watched the Hot Wings show and dig it. I enjoy a good interview. Hot sauce is nice but I've always thought of chicken wings as a shitty food. Interesting gimmick though. Would love to see someone get up there and hold a live chicken in their arms while eating.

The Outsider on HBO has a few annoying things but it's mostly a solid cool mystery story that has a good atmospheric spooky vibe.

For some reason I just watched Event Horizon. I didn't realize it had a huge cult following for being a "so bad it's good" kind of movie. I wanted to like it, but man did it stink. Could have been so much better, as they bill it "The Shining in Outer Space." Happy for those who have come to obsess over it.

Just finished latest season of Better Call Saul.

It's getting real good.

I'm talking about the Futurama seasons on Comedy Central which I believe was like seasons 7, 8, etc...Seasons 4 and 5 are friggin brilliant. To be specific, I very much enjoyed the first two movies they made after the show was canceled. Then I absolutely hated the next two movies they made. It's like that was when the weird shift was of "they had so many more amazing stories to tell" to "they are out of stories now."
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 02/13/2020 : 11:33:18
Cool! Well then I'm excited to get to the Sopranos!

As for Futurama, I've only watched up to Season 5, but my favourite episode (Roswell that Ends Well) is in Season 4. 5 was hit and miss, but still overall enjoyable I thought. I do have them all now so we'll see how badly it goes down hill. Good to go in with realistic expectations so thanks for that. :)

Troubles A Foot Posted - 02/12/2020 : 16:15:24
I thought Futurama went incredibly downhill in its final 3 seasons or so, and it should have ended earlier. It did have a few really good ones as it prepared for the end, but I was just dreading Futurama every week and worrying it was turning into another Simpsons. There was one season on Comedy Central I really hated...The first one on CC was good but maybe the next? There was an episode where they were fish or something and I remember thinking this doesn't even have anything to do with...the future...or anything, it's just a bunch of horrible fish jokes. You're saved from cancellation and this is what you do!??

Sopranos is something really unique. I like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones (some of it) but Sopranos is kind of another level artistically. It's a work of art...it's incredibly complex and ambiguous and haunting and smart.
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 02/12/2020 : 11:38:04
I understand! I have a cousin that's never seen Breaking Bad OR Game of Thrones. Sopranos is our next target once we are finished with our Survivor run.

As for The Simpsons, I can empathize. I actually stopped around season 15 (after nary a good episode since season 12) and then eventually came back. It's still nothing like it was in the first ten seasons (or more specifically, season 2-7) but I do think it's better now than it was in seasons 13-25. That said, I can't think of a single episode off the top of my head that was excellent or to point to as an example of a return to greatness. Meanwhile, re-watching Futurama I can't believe that show didn't last longer. The writing is so sharp!
